I was in grand isle this past monday and tuesday, trying to gig some flounder. My buddy and I were on the beach/elmers side of gustav cut. I went towards the beach, he went towards the bay. I was about 15yds to the right, of where the end of the rocks, on the caminada pass side of elmers, meet the beginning of the point. I was looking down, focused on finding a flounder. I was almost back on land, when I nearly stepped on a 9ft gator. He was between myself, and the beach. I was only in ankle deep water, if that is any indication, of how close we came to each other. I was close enough, to see the change in his eye/pupil size, as my flashlight passed across his head. In the 25yrs Ive been going to grand isle,I have never seen a gator, much less one that was this big. To anyone who is floundering around the cut, or in the bay behind elmers, keep a heads up. This was a big gator!!

Went to Grand Isle Sunday and Monday. Fished Elmers island both days. Trout didn't start feeding until about 10:30 each day. Caught 45 in two days, all being over 3 lbs. Topwater was the ticket. There's still tons of grass along the beach. To add to the fun, we had a 4-5 foot shark attack our stringer, while it was tied around my friends waist. Water was super clear, so I got to see the whole thing!! Be safe out there!!

Can anyone tell me if Elmer's island is open during the week yet? I was there a few weeks ago, and it was closed mon-fri. I would hate to make the drive, and it's closed. Thanks

A comment titled: Trout in response to a report titled: Grand Isle Trout

Water was clear enough to be waist deep, and see your feet with no problem. It was clear enough to see the shark attack the stringer. By late afternoon, the water was filthy again. There was a hard rising tide all night, and it brought in that pretty green water. We got to the beach right before it started to fall. The trout bit aggressively from about 1030 to 12. We caught 33 on Monday, and another 12 or so Sunday. Once the tide started to fall really hard, the bite turned off completely. All trout expect two, were full of big eggs. We threw plastic, live croakers, live mullet, and all they wanted was topwater. We fished the very end, right where the beach meets the pass. Been catching nice trout there for years. My friend has a few pixs from the Sunday trip I think.

A comment titled: Redfish in response to a report titled: Help with my sons Christmas trip to Venice :(

If you want redfish, go to southwest pass. You'll have all the redfish you can handle. If the weather is really cold, you shouldn't have a problem with the fog. My advice, is DO NOT run the river in the fog. I've been fishing offshore in venice for years. Even with radar on my boat, we never leave until the fog breaks. No fish is worth risking running the river in the fog. If you can go to grand isle, do it. Huge bullreds just minutes from bridgeside marina.
