My biggest buck to date. 164 38' green score. Shot with my bow at 19 yards. Ran 50 yards and crashed.

I know I've seen a lot of boats hitting the spillway (I work at dow Plaq) and haven't seen any reports. My Grandpa and uncle went and did not catch a bass last Friday and found that the water was a little high. I also got three reports from people saying the bass bite was pretty poor. Any reports out there before I drag the boat down to Pigeon? Heading to Cocodrie this holiday weekend for some family fishing fun. I will report back on how we do. Also, hit Cocodrie last week and smoked the big speckled beauties by 9:30 we were done. We got croakers from the Tracie Macie and his some structure in Terrebone bay. The 2nd structure we hit, it was on every cast! Tight lines to all

OK fellas, sold my boat and guess what, I'm boat shopping again...

I had a 19' flat bottom Carolina Skiff. Was a great boat, but was tired of getting beat up every time I had to cross a bay/lake. I liked that it floated in 6' of water though BC I fish Delacroix a lot and like to get skinny for the bass/reds.

I really love the way the hyper-lift Xpress boats are laid out. Exactly what I'm looking for in a boat. Large decks, storage, seating.

How do y'all like the HB Xpresses? Do they really ride decent in a chop(1-3 footers)? Any negative things you have to say about them?

Also, perusing around I found the Mako 18 LTS. Has a good V, storage, etc but is a glass boat. I was really wanting to go 20-22 feet, but I usually only have myself and 1 maybe 2 other people on board. 4 is rare (4-5 times a year). Does anyone own one of these boats? Do you like it? Cons??

These are the 2 boats that are in my price range that I like. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Figured I would tap in on the knowledge base of my fellow sportsmen and ANY suggestions/advice is much appreciated! Until I'm back on the water, Good luck!

Better late than never?

Went to Delacroix (and put in at Sweetwater Marina of course) last week. Super low and muddy water made tough conditions but we fared out with 30 trout. Fish were caught in the cleanest water we could find east of the pencil canal. We caught 75+ fish but there were a ton of small fish mixed in... we caught all of our fish by 9:30, then the wind picked up and the bite shut down and the water got dirtier. Hope the report helps, tight lines everyone

My buddy's dad just bought a camp on Lake Catherine. We have never fished the area and are looking for some pointers. I know the train trestles can be productive, but don't really know how to fish them.

Is Lake Catherine itself worth fishing? Totally new to the area...

Any info is appreciated. I don't need super specific spots, but just have no clue where to even start.

Thanks

Wife has a bachelorette party this weekend so I get to go fish/bowfish with some buddies this weekend! How bout ya yard pass??

Seeing if anyone has any recent reports for trout fishing near Leeville. No hotspots, just some clues. Do I need to run toward Grand Isle and fish around Caminada Bay? Or is Raccourici a better area?? I have caught some trout in little lake on the way to Raccourici before this time last year.

I have a 19' Carolina skiff flat bottom so I will be kind of limited if the wind is bad.

Any help is welcomed and I hope everyone has a safe a fish filled weekend!

I am looking for some recommendations for an outfitter to take a group of guys on a hog hunt in Texas. My brother-in-law is getting married and we want to take him on a hog hunt around May.

Has anyone been on one? If you liked your experience, please share the outfitter.

Thanks!

No reports from the spillway this weekend? I know the river level is right, and judging by the hundreds of boats I saw at Spillway Sportsman's and Dickies on the way to work this weekend I'm surprised not to see any reports...

Anyone watching the weather and going to roll the dice and head to Delacroix in the morning like I am? Gonna keep watching it but I've got the itch bad!

May 29, 2014 at 11:25am

Did anyone else have a rough day on the water yesterday? We ended up with a few bass, 4 keeper reds, and a handful of rat reds. That is a rough day for me in Delacroix... We had high high water and a chilly start. Just curious if anyone else struggled. I know a lot of people were fishing by the number of trucks were at sweet water!

Anyone seeing any rutting or buck activity around Liberty, MS? Just started seeing some scrapes and hookings. Have seen several does but nothing following. Just wondering what everyone else was seeing...

December 19, 2013 at 8:15pm

Delacroix is hot right now! Ran to 4 horse and fished the mouth and birds, caught our limit by 7:45! Fish caught on plastics under a cork and on the bottom. Chased some bass n reds for a while then called it a day. Beautiful day on the water! Ended up with 50 trout, 5 reds, and 4 nice bass. Good luck and be safe and courteous out there!

November 22, 2013 at 4:24pm

It was a beautiful morning on the water today before the front rolled in. Keeper trout every cast in Grand Lake until the front rolled in! All bites shut down after the front moved in but 2 of us ended up with 42 nice trout, about 15-20 throwbacks, 2 keeper reds and a few rat reds. Delacroix is on right now if you can fish around the weather!

November 18, 2013 at 3:48pm

Well despite the gale force winds and the cold fron rolling in I decided to take a buddy who doesn't fish too often to Delacroix. First couple of stops weren't hitting on much, but next stop it was ON. We caught reds from 7:20 AM til 11:20 AM. We caught our limit in about 10-15 mins and caught one monster sheepshead, but played catch and release the rest of the time. We estimated that we had caught b/t 50-60 reds.

NOT complaining but we didnt catch a SINGLE trout. Water was stained for the area we were in and I'm gonna chock it up to that. Reds were full of 1 inch shrimp and small minnows. We caught fish on live shrimp under cork, grubs under cork, and fresh shrimp under a cork in about 3 feet of water fishing a grass line.

We had a great time and he had the trip of a lifetime!

Pics coming up soon

I have been fishing Pigeon pretty hard on a regular basis lately. We have been catching some REALLY nice bass, keeping our limit every time. Is it just me or is it still kind of tough fishing? The water seems a little high still, but its running out of the woods in most places and STILL no stacked up bass! Usually if you find clean, moving water coming out of the sloughs this time of year you can catch anywhere from 10-50 bass out of one run out. Just wanted to see how everyone else was doing and if anyone had similar results. The fish I have been catching haven't been in the clear moving water.

Do y'all think most of the fish are still in the woods? I have run around and found 5+ canals with clean moving water and not a single bite...

Whatchall think?

Three trips worth of photos...

Any reports from cocodrie/dularge from anyone NOT a guide?? Heading down to fish terrebone and the islands Thursday Friday... Water still clear?

June 24, 2013 at 8:12pm

Went out of coco's marina 6/18, weather man said 0-5 mph winds... YEAH RIGHT! Long story short we couldn't get out until 8:30ish when the winds laid down enough for my 19' Carolina skiff. We ran out to whiskey island, hit the rigs in Terrence bay and the trout are there! We ended up with 45 keepers and at least 50 more throw backs... Islands didn't produce nearly as well as the rigs did... Caught all fish on plastics on a jig head. If we could have made it out early our 4 man limit would have been easy... We lost at least 10 keepers at the boat by not utilizing the net early on... Good luck to all cheers

My onboard charger has a switch on it to select either AGM or Lead Acid. I have had an onboard charger in the past that auto-selects the battery type.

Not sure if using a regular all purpose portable battery charger on AGM batteries is harmful or if it even works.

Hope this helps

We caught about 20 specks around rock island the other weekend when the wind was bad. We did a lot better getting out a little further to cleaner water in Terrebone Bay. I have caught some good specks in Pelto before around the rigs and structures as well.

trout are not still in Boudreaux are they?? We hit rock island Saturday morning due to the wind and not being able to get out, then hit the marsh for some reds. Only ended up with about 20 trout and 10-15 throwbacks

Thanks for all of your comments y'all. I decided to go with a glass skeeter. 20' with a 150 for under 20k. I have fished out of the skeeters and love them, but couldn't find one in my price range. I finally found one and hoping to get some time to look at it/buy it next week.

Tight lines to all!

Thanks for the reply fellas.

I know switching boats to something with a V will not get me as shallow as my Carolina. I'm willing to give up some draft for a better ride. Most areas I fish are 2 ft or so, so as long as I can navigate in that with the trolling motor I'm fine.

I'm glad to hear pro's con's from an actual Xpress owner. I know the big glass boats are going to ride better, but the big monster bay boats are out of my price range.

The storage in the Xpress boats are not dry? I guess that gasket around the compartments just doesn't seal them. Any halfway decent dry storage is better than what I had in my Carolina. I mounted 2 ice chest strictly for dry storage, and had to bring a fish and a drink ice chest. talk about a P.I.A.!

I'm going to keep doing my research and hopefully listen to some more of y'alls wise advice and keep an eye out for a good deal on a boat...

Thanks again and tight lines to all

Thanks for the response samurai. I would like to stay in the 20-30K range. I know a dual purpose boat is hard to find. A good hull and a smart driver can manage 2-3 ft chop taking it easy. I just had a flat bottom so no matter what you did it beat the heck out of you. That's why I was looking at the Xpress boats because they seem to have a decent draft, set up the way I like, and still have a decent V. I just know that the glass boats will ride better. But a glass boat has it's downfalls as well (rot, oyster beds, etc.)

This is why I posted, because I really am fighting several internal battles here. About to hit 30 and not born with a silver spoon, budget is always on my mind. I don't mind paying for quality, but also don't want to waste my money either.

I know there are some more experienced folks out there... Help a brother out!

Thanks for the reply! Any experience is helpful.

You said that you have fished out of the Mako, pro's and con's?

I've read reviews on the Xpresses about that D ring hairline fracture issue. All trailering issues. I'm an experienced boater/fisherman so I don't see any issues there...

I will look into the Blazer Bays, thanks again.

I think its a little early for the back levee canal due to the weather not being as cold as it usually is this time of year. I checked Oak River near the Pencil canal (launched in Delacroix) and the fish weren't in the deep areas. Instead, they were in the bays surrounding. Check the water temps, when they start dropping then the fish will be deep.

I started off in a deep bayou and put about 40 nice ones in the box one of my trips last week. But when the sun came up they were scattered in the bays on oyster reefs, grass lines, and points. Good luck and give us a report when ya go!

High is not a bad thing. you can get areas where you usually cant and can smoke em down. Not to mention the extra sight fishing opportunities that brings for reds. Really low water can be tough in Delacroix, I like it high myself.

There are 3 launches that I know of. Marina Del Ray (paying launch), one at the end of the river near the Lake, and one at the swing bridge right before Marina Del Ray. The last 2 are public launches.
