This past weekend our hunting party had a great time in the deer woods with all of us seeing deer & three of us taking game.

Friday morning was cold but I was nice and warm, taking everything in, my first deer hunt of the year!

Around 7:30 my phone crapped out on me but to magically revive itself after my hunt, go figure, Apple doesn't even know what happened exactly & are calling it a 'glitch'

After a while, I realized, hey I believe my GPS displays the time, that's good as I didn't want to keep my hunting party hanging

Hadn't seen a thing, but been hearing shots now and again, then one about 8:45 & I could have sworn that Todd had shot one.

Decided I would get down at 9:30 just in case it was in fact Todd who shot & that perhaps he needed help dragging

At 9:15 I heard a commotion slightly to my left a ways away but loud as all heck, figuring it was the guy who was walking around in the dark that I flashed from earlier that morning

No it was a nice buck coming my way!

Up n down he went, up n down, up n down, crashing through with me trying to line up a shot with my single shot 444

I wanted to make this count, ya got that!

At 75 yards out I tried to stop him but he paid no mind & just kept a coming!

As the good Lord would have it, he stopped at 12 yards quartering slightly to me & that's when I squeezed off the shot that put him down for the count!

I grossly underestimated the body size and rack on my trophy but there was no ground shrinkage when I hit the ground & that was indeed a beautiful thing!

As Chris (Morriswild) reported, he took a really fine eleven pointer that same evening & he, Todd & I wound up taking does on other hunts as well

What are the chances of two hunting compadres taking their best bucks to date on public land the same day?

Well, it happened & we are two proud dudes!

Thanks Todd & Chris for helping me get my brute of a buck out of the woods. That was rough!

Details: my buck was taken with a single shot 444, crack barrel, 17' inside spread, with a score of 127' with a whopping weight of 225lbs!

Thank you Lord!

My buddies Chris & Todd & I muzzleloaded Big Lake on Friday & Sat. Chris took a nice 140 lb 6 pt Sat morning at 11. We hunted with our bows Sunday & Monday. Everyone saw deer on several hunts. It was a great extended weekend, can't wait to get back up for the closing weekend in Tensas!

I had the most awesome hunt this past weekend in Big Lake. Was able to take a nice doe and had two very large bears come in right to my tree. One even chewed on my hoist rope! I took plenty of pictures and made a video. Hope y'all enjoy it!

Hunt Of A Lifetime On Big Lake WMA

January 10, 2012 at 8:50pm

I have been hunting for nearly twenty years now and it has always been mainly about "the experience" hunting brings that has driven me to hunt. Yes, I love the taste of venison, squirrel, wild hog and rabbit, but do I really "need" to hunt?

Some would argue that in a civilized society such as today, we have all the meat, fish and poultry we could ever desire at our local grocery, and that hunting is cruel and unjustified.

This year, I have a new reason to hunt, in fact, my number one reason to hunt. Bare with me a little, why I explain.

I began having some health issues about a year and a half ago, long story short, it was from eating too much processed crap and too much sugar/corn syrup, which is in just about any processed or packaged food.

My doctor gave me this bull sh## low fat 1000 calorie a day diet to follow, that I quickly threw in the trash bin.

Even longer story made short, I decided I was just going to eat "real food". I did a computer search and typed in real food, and came up with this:

which lead me to read this:,,9781594200823,00.html

I've always said if we eat real food and cut out processed junk and sugar, we'd be fine, but these two books and others have enlightened me as to why not only is it important what we eat, but even more importantly what we eat, eats.

The Omnivore's dilemma is a great read (includes a nice story about a wild pig hunt) and is a best seller.

I have cut out soft drinks, processed junk and am careful about what produce and meat/poultry/fish I buy. You cannot beat wild caught seafood as opposed to farmed, and free range/pasture fed animals just like what's in our woods is the healthiest protein you can put in your body. Wild game and fish are high in omega-3 fatty acids which doctors say is very important to get enough of, because quite frankly, industrial diets, or the American diet has too many 0mega-6 fatty acids. The ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 should ideally be 1-1, or 2-1. The typical Industrial diet has us pulling in more like a 10-1 ratio, which leads to obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

So, my number one reason to hunt/fish is to fill my freezer with as much game and fish as possible, that are devoid of antibiotics, hormones and preservatives.

The next time someone asks you why you hunt, tell them, you hunt for healthy food from the forests, that cannot be duplicated at most groceries and by hunting/fishing, you are eating healthy and saving money in the long run.

BTW, I have shed mega pounds and feel better than I have in many years.

I'm off to the woods now for an evening hunt.

Safe hunting everyone and Bon Apetite!

Both our best bucks to date killed the same day! What are the odds of that happening again!

What a great weekend, so happy for our hunting party. Not everyone killed but everyone saw at least one deer & other critters as well.

Congratulations again Chris!

Thing is, you start shooting those deer outside the bathroom and you'll never see them again in daylight hours.

My aunt & uncle have a place in Ms where you can see them every evening sometimes up to ten deer or more. One visit we counted nine with four being bucks.

They are fun to hunt and good to eat but lots of fun to study! If one has enough land, the idea of a sanctuary is priceless.

That new camera is very impressive!

A comment titled: Words? in response to a report titled: RESPECT FOR OUR WILDLIFE

Seems like a lot of folks on this thread aren't taking Deerman seriously.

Perhaps trying to keep things light, but make no mistake his point is very valid.

When talking with people whose hunting views I have no clue of I always try and be respectful and often use words such as harvest to get my point across.

Now with my hunting buddies we may use other descriptive words when describing a hunt and that's understandable but I believe we do need to choose our words carefully in public as well as how we carry ourselves when wearing camo.

As everyone knows, us hunters are a minority.

I agree with Deerman, let's be respectful and project a positive presence. You just never know how important that could be in the scheme of things.

100% legal kill Patrick. Hogs can be taken during squirrel/rabbit season with the appropriate ammo in 22LR or 22 magnum and shotgun with up to goose shot, no buck shot.

A comment titled: Pigets in response to a report titled: Piglets

Caught two very small ones yrs ago. Was in your same shoes. I was told by a wildlife rehabilitater to use a product called Esbilac which is a milk replacement for fur bearers. I mixed it with Gatorade. They love the taste and it (gatorade) has electrolytes which are good for them.

After a few days I would mix the Esbilac with Gatorade and Gerber powdered baby food in a box I purchased from any Piggly Wiggly.

This keeps them healthy and satisfied as they grow extremely fast and have huge food demands.

Esbilac is still available.

PM me if you want, would be glad to be of help.

BTW, my male went from roughly 2.5 lbs to 165 lbs in 10 months. I know this for a fact as he was officially weighed at that time.
