I am wondering how deep the water is in ponds at the south farm? Gonna go try and get some mudbugs and am wondering if I need waders or hip boots? I know during season there is a deep canal around the ponds but in middle most arent deep?

Me and buddies are trying to find a camp and or lot near Tensas NWR. Found a few online but all have been sold. Any helpful information is appreciated.

Where are the diving ducks around the Durand/Barras ponds in Catahoula St. Martinville area? I have had a blind there for 14 years and there are usually a ton of diving ducks around that make up a big portion of our season bag. This year I killed the first divers monday 2 redheads, killed a ringneck yesterday and that is it! Last year had about 40-45 divers. Im not even seeing many at all flying high. Has anyone else hunting this area noticed a lack of them this year?

Have a chance at a duck lease around Krotz Springs hwy 71 area. Wondering if it is a good area and worth it? Has anyone hunted this area or know anything about it

August 15, 2011 at 2:24pm

Kaplan has slowed way down from opening weekend. Hunted Sat and Sun got 2 Sat and 7 this morn and that was every bird we shot at. Not many flying at all and not much shooting heard either. Has it slowed for everybody else?

September 19, 2010 at 5:07pm

Had great teal opener in Kaplan, bagged 18 and lost 1 Sat morning, than same Sunday morning. Should have had 5 man limit both days. Lots of birds, mostly pairs and singles early than round 7:45 the big flocks start decoying. Game wardens gave us a visit Sat morn checked everything possible. How other Kaplan area guys do?

September 12, 2010 at 6:34pm

Hunted this morn at blind in Kaplan expecting to see alot more birds than we did. You would think with a front the afternoon and night before to have some birds moving in the morn, just wasn't the case. We had 3 man hunt with a mallard, a spoon, and 4 teal; all we shot at. Had a flock of about 20 spoons make a pass over us looking like they would come back so we didn't shoot to try to get better shot and they never came back. Didn't see many ducks at all. Went to Suires after and with every table full I think we were high blind. Talked to buddies who hunted Pecan Island, Hathaway, Basin, and Kaplan and most of em scratched or had 2 or less with exception of 1 group in Pecan who had 6 teal.

December 05, 2009 at 3:35pm

Havent posted in a while but our blind in KAPLAN is still producing good hunts for us, best start in 5 years we been there we are averaging around 12 ducks a hunt for 10 hunts. Went this morn and got 20 had a grey, greenhead, spoon, and rest teal, oh and a flying fish(hoody). Shoulda had our 4 man limit 2 hunters had to leave early. Had 14 before guys left and had they stayed woulda easily got 10 more. Saw a ton of birds lots of mallards but they didn't want to work very well. Lots of geese as well but our fields are not plowed and they don't even give us a look.

December 02, 2009 at 5:41pm

Went check the lease in Kaplan today got there at about noon and had around 60 ducks in our pond next to the blind. Only bad thing almost all were mottles. Talked to guy down road he had went to his blind at around 9 am and said he had 3 to 4 hundred in his pond mostly teal. If this water stays high in the marsh we should have a good opener in Kaplan area talked to 2 guys in Pecan Island said they went Sunday and had no ducks because of it. Anybody else been out around the Kaplan area?

November 04, 2009 at 5:19pm

Since the slow opener Kaplan has gotten much better made hunts Tues Thur and this morn and got our 2 man limits each hunt. Hasn't been fast and furious but have had oppurtunity at 3 or 4 man limits if we'd had more hunters. How have the other area hunters done this week?

September 18, 2009 at 1:51pm

My buddies and I are thinking about going on a public land hunting trip out of state. We are thinking maybe Arkansas, Kansas, South Dakota? Wondering if anybody on here has done something like this. Looking for suggestions and tips that might help us make this a success.

September 14, 2009 at 5:59pm

Had a horrible opener in Kaplan only had 4 teal come in range got 3. Didn't see many teal at all, lots of big ducks could have had a limit of them. Went to Suire's after and talked to about 20 hunters and none had even shot. Had a buddy off of Liberty Farm rd they got 12 with 4 hunters only people i talked to that did good. Talked to guys down the rd from us and they had 1 with 6 hunters! Another buddy not far from Suire's had 3. Usually we easily limit and see lots of birds they just weren't many in the area this a.m. hopefully that'll change tomorrow.

September 12, 2009 at 2:12pm

Went Fri afternoon to check out our ponds and area saw very little water anywhere and drove around at dusk and saw very few teal. Heard there were a ton near Suire's but didn't check out the spot. We had went 2 weeks before to check our ponds and they looked great with 6 inch tall grass and seeds everywhere now grass is about waist high and thick. Talked to the landowner today and he started pump n and will pass a water blade through to give us some open water. Anybody been seeing any decent numbers around the area. Also went check out Henderson Sunday afternoon and saw a pair and thats it stayed till dark went all over the north side.

September 08, 2009 at 3:13pm

We went frogging Sat night 8/15 in Henderson we were there from about 1230 to 5 we went all over the north side and eventually tried to get to Lake Fardoche but didn't have enough gas to make it there and back. Had guys coming out of there and said they had caught 50 in the lake. We saw 1 mature bullfrog and he was under a downed tree impossible to get to, we saw hundreds of juveniles. What is up, I believe since there were so many small bullfrogs that all the coonasses around here have already overfished it. Any help and opinions on this would be appreciated. Also where would be the closest place near Lafayette to go and catch a few don't need to slaughter em just 30 would be enough for us to be happy. We go in a 15 ft flat with a 25 so can get in some small areas.

August 16, 2009 at 10:25pm

Might try Henderson Sat morn, how's the bite been lately haven't seen any posts? Gotta work Fri and Sat night so don't wanna get up early with 4 hrs of sleep if not biting. Bream, sacs, bass doesn't matter. Not asking for anybody's spots just if its worth the trip.

Going to Perdido Key,Fl next week and my buddies want to go on a charter. One checked into Cool Breeze Charter Fishing and I looked at the website and wasnt too impressed. Has anyone used them before or any other suggestions for a charter. We are looking for offshore bottom fishing, snappers/groupers, etc.

I'm not sure if its out yet or not but if it is has anyone got that new Benelli Vinci?

April 25, 2009 at 2:14pm

Hunted Kaplan Sunday morn and ended with 2 greenhead, 2 hen, 2 drake pintail, 1 ringneck. Had lots of birds, but in huge flocks high. Had like 6 flocks(40 birds total) come through early and didnt even get a shot off, saw em too late and dog broke twice. This morning was a nice hunt as well, ended with 1 ross, 2 snow, 1 speck, 1 grey, 1 spoon, 2 mottle, 3 gw teal and lost 1 teal. Shoulda had 5-6 more ducks didn't shoot worth anything and passed some shots up we shoulda took. A north wind is bad for our blind as we face it and don't have water on our south side, and our open water was straight white caps. All in all good to see and work lots of birds. Have yall been hunting Xpress?

December 22, 2008 at 8:59pm

Had to bring my gun to the shop it isn't ejecting properly. Brought it to Custom in Lafayette, they said at least a month, which prob means 2. Does anyone know of anybody else who repairs guns around the Lafayette area. I know of Mike Brazda in Arnaudville hes my dad's friend but my dad said he would take just as long. And before anyone comments yes I took it apart and cleaned the heck out of it. And if its any relevance to who might repair it, its a Remington 11-87. I'd be willing to drive for up to an hour away if they could get it repaired quicker. Thanks for any help.

December 15, 2008 at 3:34pm

Very slow opener for Kaplan. Sat was slow 3 hunters knocked down 6 but lost 2. Bagged 2 gw, 1 bw, 1 spoon. Basically all we shot at, and after 715 never shot again. This morning we had our first scratch, my buddy shot once at some teal that buzzed us and that's it. Not many birds at all the fewest we've seen all season. Went to Suire's both days after and noone did any good and there were alot of hunters going thru there. Guess the rain put waters in alot of new fields spreading the birds out.

Look for low areas, most sign is found by water since they like mud wallowing. I can't walk anywhere without seeing hog sign just walk until U find fresh sign. I went into a new area had never been not expecting much sign because wasn't very swampy. Couldn't walk 50 yds without seeing sign. Got into a sounder but couldn't get shot off as they were in thick briars and ferns. Just put some boots on the ground Im
Sure you will find some.

Good to hear you got a few birds so close to home. I went check Krotz Springs blind last wed and had no water and wasnt cut yet. Talked to guy in charge and he said it should be good to go this week. Still got 3 weeks til opener on that side so should be ok. Went do some work at St Martinville blind and got lil bit of water didn't see any birds, no surprise there though usually not good early season. With the swamps so dry might be a good start to season for me in Krotz.

Its a little further up than 2 miles but not too far from there. Heard from another guy that it usually isnt til end of season that it is good there and that the birds roost in area and leave when riding to blind? I'm sure its like anywhere else if you get the right conditions you can do good. Thanks for the comments. Waiting on my buddy to see if we are gonna take it or not.

Me and 3 my deer hunting friends all have H&R .444. We hunted tensas, sherburne, indian bayou all with these this year. Harvested 7 deer this past season with them. Not a single one went more than 20 yds. I shot 2, one of which dropped on spot other ran bout 20 yds than dropped dead. Like others said very accurate gun. All the areas we hunted there aren't any shots over 100 yds so its definately more than accurate enough. I actually used this gun during rifle season as well as primitive, I'm that confident in it.

Hunted this morn, it was horrible, got 1 bird out of a pair that buzzed us from the back and thats all we shot at. Got buzzed a few more times and had a flock of 5 work around us a few passes never giving us a good shot. Wish we woulda taken what they gave coulda got 1 or 2 at least but wanted em to come in for all to shoot. Blind next to us had 4 and talked to guys down the road had 4 also. Dont know what happened today but very unexpected from the good weekend we had.

A comment titled: need right conditions in response to a report titled: kaplan still producing

Kaplan usually is all about conditions, after the first week the birds usually get shot out of the area. If you are in a good spot when you get good rainy, windy, or frontal conditions you will do good. If it is a sunny, clear, calm day you can stay home usually. This year however we were doing good even on sunny days but they were windy. Yesterday and today however were more like we are used to when sunny and light wind. If you can hunt when you want like i am able to do anytime you see those conditions hunt you will do good, if you can only hunt weekends don't expect much. We lease the land, this is our 5th year there.

A comment titled: hard to say in response to a report titled: need a hunting report

I got a blind just southwest of town and we have had the best start to a season in the 5 years we been there. We have hunted 12 times and have killed around 135-140 ducks this year in 1 blind. Wed was phenomenal we killed 20 and if 2 hunters didn't have to leave for work could have had our 24. Yesterday got 1 teal and today got 6 with a mallard, a spoon and rest teal. Yesterday and today we didn't see many ducks at all, lots of geese tho. Tomorrow is supposed to have an East wind and in my experience out there it is usually not that good a West wind is when we do best, what we had Wednesday. With a light East wind and sunny skies I wouldn't expect much tomorrow. Since you haven't hunted it all year however you might have a good amounts of birds sitting on it tho and in that case conditions aren't as important. If you know someone in the area I'd have em check it out for you today if not I don't know if I'd drive 3 hours with the conditions we will have tomorrow.

Man sounds like you are having a really hard time of it this season so far, Im used to your posts of tons of ringnecks. Hope things get better for you man, I hunt Kaplan and we are having the best season start in the 5 years we been at this blind. I guess the high water has most of the birds in the fields. Im sure as soon the water drops we will be back to slow hunts unless we get good conditions and you will be slaughtering those ringers again. Good luck on rest of season

A comment titled: south of town in response to a report titled: Duck Hunt

Hunted Tues morn south of town, had to leave at 7 because buddies had to work but ended with 2 mottles, 2 greys, 1 spoon, 7 teal, and a bonus speck that worked the call perfect(he had no black,ha). Had lots of teal decoying early and passing through but with tall grass around we can't see them good enough if they are low to shoot. Also noticed alot more geese than the weekend. Buddy down road went this am and got 3 man limit of teal.

A comment titled: join both in response to a report titled: Duck Organizations

I'm a member of both as well as CCA. These organizations improve habitat/populations but even more importantly a way of life. Without special interests groups like these that represent hunters we would be in real trouble. Other anti hunter special interest groups are constantly trying to take away our right and passion of hunting. Take PETA for example, if hunters were not organized they would definately sway the government. Also if not for Ducks Unlimited and Delta the populations of ducks would be much lower. I think that most of the "short stopping" is more attributed to the fact that people realized they can make money off ducks and it has turned too much into business like everything else. Even if DU wasn't around these private clubs would still do this. As LA DU members we should push for them to have more projects in the state especially along the coast. Also Im not sure bout other areas but I have seen a drastic change in a loss of agriculture and waterfowl habitat in my area(Kaplan) in the last decade. If the marshes continue to vanish and the inland rice fields and habitats do as well LA duck hunting will be a memory with or without DU and Delta, but with them at least there is hope.
