*2 MAN QUAIL HUNT WITH DOGS
OCT 1 â MARCH 31ST (WINNER WILL CONTACT VINCE MAGGIO TO ARRANGE DATE OF HUNT AND DETAILS)
This year started out better because my father (who has a rare disease) was going to be my hunting partner for another year. On 12-8-11 I killed a small 8pt and he killed a big doe. This was the first time that we both got one on the same day. That night while cleaning them my mother told me that my dad has been saying a little pray for me to kill a big one.
On 12-9-11 we both set out at about 3:00pm for another hunt. I sent him a text at about 5 telling him I hadn't seen anything. At 5:31pm I was getting my stuff together to climb down. A shot rang out from the property just north of my stand location. Thatâs when this big 8 (already in my lane) lifted his head up to look back to the north. I had no idea it was in my lane eating corn. He lowered his head and I knew it was the last legal minute.
I then lowered the crosshair of my 30-06 between the shoulder blades and let the 165gr bullet fly. He dropped and never made a movement. I called my dad and told him to hurry because I was shaking to bad to get down. I still could not tell how big he was due to it getting dark. I finally got down and headed to the truck but met my dad coming in. He asked what is it and I told him I still haven't looked yet. He said lets go look before everybody else gets over here.
We then went to look at it and as we walked up to it I was amazed. All my dad kept saying is look at the mass. I broke down because I have hunted so hard for 20 yrs with my dad. It was the big 8 that my buddies Mitch and Darron had about 30 pics of. I did not get the first picture of this deer in my area the entire hunting season. I am so thankful for the shot that rang out because I would have never seen this deer.
Deer details are 8pt. 175 lbs. 142 2/8' with 5 1/4' bases killed on 12-9-11 at 5:31pm by Michael Golden
It won the Dec Big Buck contest with 50 percent of the votes.
Everthing means a little more when you have your dad with you.
Very nice for your first deer. Congrats
