Slug shotguns apparently are not a hot item because no one in the Lafayette area seems to carry them. Guess I will have to order it. Narrowed my choices down to either the Rem 870 or the Browning silver. Anyone know where is the best place to order a gun? I called a few places in the Pineville area but they want to order/sell the gun for the same MSRP price as the Browning/Remington website!!!!!!
Shot these two lil sows Saturday morning. Didn't realize I could shoot my bolt action .17 so fast!!! Now I just have to put them in the ol coonass microwave and put the beer on ice.
Is the 45-70 legal for Lake Ophelia, or can you only use black powder over there? Thanks.
Has anyone seen any signs of rutting activity at Red River WMA recently? I shot this lil 3-point on 3Jan11, but haven't seen any scrapes. Rubs are fairly easy to find, but I guess this crazy weather has got them all screwed up. Guess I'll try again next week for muzzle loader season.
Does anyone know if any good deer were killed for the 4-5 December hunt? I haven't heard anything or seen any posts, and was just curious. I got picked for the last hunt in Jan.
Shot this lil guy on Saturday at 0850hrs. At the check station, they said he was 1.5 yrs old and 110 lbs.
Went to the camp Thurs/Friday to do some scouting. After making a squirrel hunt Friday morning, I went check a spot where I killed a spike last year. By that time (1300hrs), the wind was blowing pretty good, so I didn't feel the need to be too quiet. As I was walking through the woods, off to my left I could tell that something jumped up. Then I saw it was a hog. I had a partial view of the head, so I let the .17 do the talking. The hog immediately dropped and started squealing. Then she got up and started grunting and running towards me but it was too thick to get another clean shot. I very quickly started looking for a tree to climb, but luckily she fell again about 10 yards from me. To ensure she wouldn't get up again, I laid down some suppressive fire in her vicinity and that was all she wrote. I didn't weigh her, but I figured the weight to be at least 75-80lbs.
I've never been to Calcasieu lake and want to catch a bunch of specks/reds. Any recommendations on which guide to choose? Thanks.
I've heard that there is a public launch at Intracoastal City. Can someone give me the name and directions? I was trying to get to the west side of Vermillion bay from the locks at White lake but they wouldn't open them. Thanks.
Just wondering what type sunglasses you guys use (guides included) when freshwater/offshore fishing. I'm getting a free pair of Wiley-X sunglasses(rebate offer after purchasing an abu garcia revo stx), but I really want a pair of Costa Del Mar's. I've also heard that amber or vermillion lenses are better at being able to see below the surface of the water. The blue lenses look pretty cool too.
I haven't seen many posts this year regarding what was killed during the three lottery muzzle loader hunts this year at Lake Ophelia. Does anyone know if anything big was killed?
In comparison, I know you shouldn't put a cheap scope on a high quality deer rifle. But some of these rods (prices) are just plain outrageous. Perhaps it's the $39 price tag, but all my rods are Shakespere ugly sticks. They are extremely durable and I haven't broken one yet. Are the real expensive rods that much better/more sensitive which helps you catch more fish? Who pays $300+ for a G.Loomis, or $150+ for a Shimano or Carrot Stix?? Just wondering.
During the later part of the season, I put out a mixture of deer caine/persimmon buck jam/and some other concoction which consisted of rice bran, soybean meal, corn, and apples. This stuff smelled so good, I thought about eating it. I hunted over this bait pile for two days and saw nothing. Went back a week later and there were a few tracks around the stuff but most of it was still there. I know for a fact that there were deer and hogs in the area and couldn't believe they didn't tear it up. They had to have smelled this stuff but I guess they didn't want it or maybe it just spooked them. I keep telling myself that I will quit buying this stuff every year. At the very least, I thought hogs would smell this stuff and come running.
I've killed a few hogs with a shotgun but I'm hoping to get one with my 17. I've heard that the best place to shoot them with a small caliber rifle is right behind the ear. Is this the best location?
If you hunt WMAs in Louisiana, I'm sure you are aware that we can't use tires larger than 25 inches. However, LDWF does state it is ok to use 26" tires on UTVs. It makes no sense to me for them to allow 26" tires on UTVs but restrict ATVs to 25 inches. Nonetheless, does anyone think that they might change the law for next year and allow 26" tires on ATVs? I just bought a new four wheeler in Nov and need some mud tires but would hate to buy 25" tires if there is a chance they might raise the tire size restriction. Thanks.
Was wondering if anyone knew how much these camper/trailers were sold for at this public auction. Some of these mobile trailers look like it would make a perfect camp. I passed there yesterday and there's still a ton of them out there. Not sure if they weren't sold or if they just waiting to be picked up.
Killed this spike at Red River WMA on Saturday at 1300hrs. I was creeping in the water (into the wind) and could hear something in the water. I thought I caught a glimpse of a hog, but about five minutes later, this spike just appeared out of nowhere about 20ft away. Needless to say, that's when his day ended.
I just noticed on the website that the 2010 CAN-AM 500, 650, and 800 is 86inches in length. The regulation pamphlet states that atv's can not exceed 85inches in length. Has anyone had a problem with this while on a WMA and do you really think an agent will give you a ticket for your atv being one inch longer? I've never seen an agent attempt to measure my four wheeler. The only thing I've seen them do is make an effort to read the tire dimensions to ensure I was using a 25" tire.
Several new ATV's come stock with 26" tires. If I'm not mistaken, the pamphlet still states ATVs are restricted to a 25" tire, but UTVs are ok with a 26" tire. That doesn't make much sense to me. Does the state expect everyone that buys these new larger ATVs to immediately change the tires just to go on a WMA?
I seriously doubt that there's any close comparison in price between an X21 and a 21' Ranger, Skeeter, Phoenix, etc. Last week, I looked at a 2012 Ranger Z520 (20 footer) that the dealer was willing to let go for 54K. I paid 25K in 2008 for my X19 with a four stroke Yamaha 150. There's no way I'd pay more than 30-32K for an Xpress boat even if it had a 250hp. Once you start getting into that price range, that's where fiberglass boats blow away Xpress. Kinda like buying a loaded toyota camry or spending a little more money for an entry or mid level Mercedes.
Depends on what you'll be using it for (fresh water, or salt/brackish water). I have an X19 and do like my boat. Runs great. But because I now see that fiberglass boats have many more ammenities, etc, I know for a fact that my next boat will be fiberglass. Xpress boats sit high in the water. While fishing, wind will aggravate the crap out of you. I've used mine in vermillion bay and the gulf. Sometimes a little rough but handles the waves well and feels rock solid.
To each his own. For me, a dead boar will remain in the woods. I've seen people do all sorts of 'things' to a boar hog once it's been killed. These remedies were all supposed to work and make the meat edible, but the end result was all the same when they tried to cook it............the pot and it's contents were thrown outside!!!!!!
Where do you get 'sweet feed' at and is that the official name of the product? Thanks.
while squirrel hunting, I walked up on a large cottonmouth that was trying to swallow a huge bullfrog. The snake swallowed one leg and was trying to work it's mouth up over the rest of the frog but it was having some issues. Apparently the frog was too large; they both kinda looked worn out but you could tell the frog had a healthy does of venom in it. I don't think the frog made it, but I definitely know the snake didn't make it. I fed him some .17 HMR.
Both areas are good hunting, both areas are accessible by ATV and both areas have tons of hunters. Just make sure your ATV doesn't have tires larger than 25 inches.
What bait did you catch them on?
Extremehuntr, just tell the boss (wife) that you don't like the shoes she's wearing and tell her you really think she needs to go the mall and get several pairs of new shoes. You'll be able to buy your boat the next day.
Yeah, I had an experience with H&M marine before. I WOULD NOT buy a boat over there even if they wanted to sell it for a hundred dollars!!!!!!!!!!
you should call boats unlimited in Baton Rouge. That's where I bought my X19. Good prices and nice people. At the time of purchase, they threw in a two bank charger and two life jackets.
No, you can't do that. My dad has the 1.5hp from Cabelas. You can't use the blade when you have the sausage stuffer attachment. I can't imagine how much you could grind with the 1.75hp, the 1.5 is an absolute beast!!!!
Menoo, I thought Brent was gonnna make a big gumbo and put some steaks on the pit. What happened?
I went on Thursday 27Jan11. I should have known it wasn't going to be a good day when I discovered the road was closed. A guy was nice enough to let me turn around in his yard (about 2 miles past Dago's) and he said he didn't know why they closed the road. I was determine to go mainly to burn the old gas I had in my boat since August. I drove to Jeanerette and came the back way. The water was pretty nice and the waves weren't too bad. According to this website, the tide was supposed to be moving from about 1300 to 1500. I fished several spots in the bay and couldn't even get a hardhead to take a shrimp. At least it was fun to be on the water and burn a little gas.
Yes, there was water in the lakes. I was hunting near westcutt lake and could hear the mallards calling all day. The spot I was hunting normally has about 12-18 inches of water this time of year. I could have worn tennis shoes this past weekend. The deer are there, I just don't know where they go during the day. Lots of people hunt the weed patches, but I don't know if the deer were in there during the daylight hours, unless they bedded down the whole day.
I've been hunting the same spots (in area 1) for the past few years when I've gotten picked. I think that I will apply for area 2 next year.
I stayed in my tree stand all day long, didn't climb down until dark. Fresh deer crap all over the place and a few scrapes that looked like they were reworked within the past few days. Didn't see any deer. Sitting in a tree stand all day long and not seeting anything makes for a very long day.
Yep, I'll be there on Friday too. Bought a new 45-70 last week and I hope I can find out what it does to a deer's neck or shoulder this weekend. I haven't seen one single post on here about the previous two lottery hunts. However, I have heard that there isn't much water in the woods.
yeah, I just called the office in Marksville and they said the 45-70 was legal. I just may have to go to academy and spend $229 on one.
Whoaaaa, BIGJON, what's going on???
Wow. Don't get me wrong, I do like Xpress boats, but I would not pay 40k for one. I know the motors wouldn't be the same, but I think 40K gets you a much nicer fishing rig in fiberglass opposed to what Xpress has. But in the end, its all up to the person putting the money down. Fiberglass and aluminum boats each have there own pros/cons.
