Any reports of the rut activity on Tensas National wildlife refuge? Went there a few weeks ago(after the 2nd gun hunt) and did not see any new deer sign in the woods. Not sure if it was because of the high waters or the hot weather. The rut should be be starting to kick off soon. Trying to plan another hunting trip there.

How did you all hunters do in Tensas National Wildlife refuge hunt this weekend. From what I saw, not too many deer were killed around the Sharkey 4 wheeler trail.

I have purchased a 223 rifle for my 8 year old son. I was wondering if any one had luck in harvesting a deer with theirs. At 100 yards, he has about a 2 inch group. Any help and information would be greatly appreciated. I let him shoot a 243, but he is not comfortable with it. So has anyone had any luck with the 223 rifle? Thanks

I was wondering if there would be a problem when using a whisker biscuit with the Bohning 2 inch Blazer vanes? Is there enougn clearance in the biscuit to allow the vane to not make contact when released? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The last 2 days have been excellant around the St. James boat launch area. Limited out both days, quite a few 4 lbers, and big fish was 6.2 lbs. Only if they would have been biting for the CMN tournament. The fishery is starting to come back to the area. Hopefully you will catch a few. Try catch and release

My buddy told me the same thing, way more hunters that the first lottery hunt with less shots. There group killed 3 small bucks hunting around the Africa flat area. What area were you hunting around. with the cooler temps the last week or so I belive that is what got the deer moving for the first lotterty hunt. Then take into consideration the few hunters applying lots of human scent to the refuge put the deer on lock down. Looks like the weather for the second gun hunt this weekend won't be the best with lots of rain. The peak of the rut should start in the early part of January. If you have been huinting the refuge for years, about 2 weeks after the full moon in January is whe the rut usually kicks off. This is the best time to be in the woods to bag a big La buck.

A comment titled: Tensas in response to a report titled: Tensas Info?

I was in Tensas for the first gun hunt, we had a total of 10 hunters at my camp and we bagged a total of 8 deer. The buggest being a 1 1/2 old 7 point that weighed in at 155 lbs. we saw lots of deer in th are that we were hunting. The second gun hunt should be good but due to the rain that they had befor the first gun hunt and the rain that is expected this week, it may be really flooded. Find a high ridge with acorns and you should be fine, i did find lots of good deer sign for this time of the year. Rut will be earlier than the last few years. Good luck on your hunt.

I amde the run from Bayou black to venice several times. If you run through the intercoastal it will take you about 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 hours long. I ran through some of the marsh area and made it in about 2 hours and 10 miuntes. This is running 70 mph. Not a fun ride!!!

I beleive the Eric Andoselk bass tournament is this coming weekend. I think the 19 pounds may be the winning stringer of the children's maricule network tournament or another tournament that may have been held out of bayou black this weekend.

Was in Tnesas from Dec. 26- 30 and saw lots of deer. the deer are just starting to move around and look for does, not really in rut. As for the rut, if we do not continue to keep getting cold weather, It will be after the hunting season. When I was up in Tensas in Dec 26-30, Isaw 4 bucks and about 8-10 does. Had a 150 plus inch 10 pointer 25 yards from me that we running a doe. If he would have been in rut , I would have a picture of him on the screen. He and a spike and a 6 pt was just running her. Hardly no scrapes, but plenty of rubs. My father and I are leaving on Thursday and staying up there for 10-12 days. Hopefully the rut will take place soon. Time is running out

I hunted Tensas from Sunday evening till Tuesday. My son was picked for the special youth hunt that takes place in back of the refuge center. He killed a spike and a doe. many deer were seen chasing does. I hunted in my stand on Sunday and saw a decent 8 point buck, too far to shot. Hunted Monday morning and saw nothing. Hunted Monday Evening and saw 6 deer. Had a spike, 6pt, and a 150 plus inch 10 point chasing 2 does next to me. The 10pt buck came within 25 yards of me but he was facing me. I was not going to shoot him looking straigt at me. He actually winded me an ran off. Wind was in his favor. Going back next weekend for 10 days. The rut is fixing to break loose. The bucks are starting to chase but no grunting. I hunted Tuesday moring and saw nothing, hunted Tuesday evening and saw 5 does. My oldest son saw 2 does and a spike. I am finding more rubs than scrapes.

A comment titled: Rut in Tensas in response to a report titled: Tensas nwr

The rut has not really started yet. Over the last past 3-4 years it is getting later and later in the month of January. When you start seeing spotted fawns in November that is a good sign to go on that the rut has been late. I will be heading up there on the 7th and will hunt until the 15th. The rut may hopefully start around there. Talked to my friend who lives up there and deer movement is down right now.

A comment titled: Muzzle loader weekend in response to a report titled: Rut in Tensas?

Hunted Tensas this weekend for the muzzle loader hunt and from what I saw is was terrible. Lots of wind and deer movement was down. I killed a 3 point and when I checked him in at 6:45PM, at the check station near big lake camp ground only had 16 deer regiatered. As for the rut, Noticed lots of small scrapes and rubs. The cold weather should help for the gun hunt this weekend. I hunted for the first gun hunt and like the person before me I did noticed lots of 40-60lb deer being checked in. Hunted down the Sharkey trail and there was no where near the regular amount of deer checked in. If you plan on going bow hunting the rut should be in the early part of January if the weather stayes cold. Went to Hunters Bend camp ground and saw one good 8 pt weighing 254 and having a 18 inch spread. as for Tensas this year their are a good heard of deer but they are small.

A comment titled: Information on pond management in response to a report titled: Weed Management in Fishing Pond

The main problem is that you do not have an adequate suppply of oxygen. depending on how deep is your pond, that will distinguish what type of aeration system you my need. I have a 1 acre pond that is 14-16 feet deep and the best aerations system is a disfussed aerator pump. This type of aerarot supplies oxygen throughout the entire pond, from the bottom to the top. If you have a pond that is 5-6 foot deep, a sprinkler system aerator pump is sufficent. Also it is good to call the LA. dept. of wildlife and Fisheries, you may want to try to get a permit for some Tripold carp. This is a grass carp that strickly eats the grass and algae in your pond. They live between 10-15 years and will not reproduce.

A comment titled: Information on rut in response to a report titled: Rut in tensas

The major part of the rut in tensas usually starts the first week of January. Over the last pass 6 years this is when the major rutting takes place grunting, chasing etc. The bow hunting should be good till the end of the season. There were not many deer killed on the lottery hunts this year. The 1st gun hunt they killed 204 deer and the 2nd hunt there were 211 deer killed. Hopefully it will be better for the bow hunters.

A comment titled: I will be there in response to a report titled: Tensas NWR

I am leaving this afternoon to go to my camp in Tensas. I have been hunting there for about 15 years. Andy, about 4-5 years ago, I was one of the hunters that you wrote an article about the deer and habitat to hunt on Tensas National Wildlife refuge, if you remember. You had included pictures of the deer that we had killed that year, 178 class non-typical, 158 class 11 point and lots of other bucks. This weekend will be great, the deer will move all day long. I suggest that anyone going to Tensas this weekend, make sure you read the pamplet. You MUST fill out a daily hunting pamplet. It MUST be turned in each day. If you are caught without this card, you will be ticketed. Hope to see you all there and GOOD hunting to all.

My dad has a Thompson 50 cal. encore and he is shooting 150 grains of pyrodex pellets and the shockwave 250 gr. bullets. We have checked the scope mounts, everything is really tight, but the grouping of bullets is terrible. Any suggestions on what should he do next? Different bullets, less powder, clean the gun after every shot or every other shot? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Water in Tensas is still high. Mr. Hixon's bridge that is accross from Gumbo acres camp ground was completely under water. Sharkey road 4-wheeler trail is only 2.3 miles long due to the bridge being completely under water. Water was starting to go down, but it will take time. Africa lake flat was under water also. If they contiune to get rain, the first gun hunt will be a bust for the ones that got picked. If you have a boat, that will be the ticket to success.

What kind of bullets are you shooting? My youngest son has a Rossi 223 and when I shot some bullets that I purchase from Cabelas, it would do the same thing. Try purchasing the federal premium bullets, they shot everytime. The 60 grain bullets are the best for hunting deer. Anything smaller in grain size and your are taking a chace at just wounding the deer.

A comment titled: My group got picked in response to a report titled: Tensas

Yes, you are correct. The second lottery gun hunt had over 3000 applications sent in. The numbers of applications selected was 1750. The last few years, they were selecting 2500 hunters per hunt. Due to a recent study on the TNWR the refuge was always tought to be over populated with deer. The study proved it is not. I have quite a few of my buddies that put in for the second hunt and received a letter stating they were not selected. The thing that bothers me, is when you sent them in a group, the whole group is suppose to get picked. This year, I have some of my buddies that sent their applications in as a group and 2 applications were selected and the other 3 were not. What is the use of sending them in as a group if the whole group does not get selected. If you haven't been to the refuge lately, there is high water all over the refuge. I spoke to a warden last weekend, and if it keeps raining, the four-wheeler trails will probally get closed. Plenty of rain fell this week and lots more for tomorrow.

A comment titled: Information on Drawing in response to a report titled: draw for tensas

The drawing was held today. If you put in for the first gun hunt and you did not have any issues with the permit, you were selected. There was not enough entries to fill the first hunt. If you put in for the second hunt, a drawing was held. Lots of entries for the second hunt. The permits will be mailed out this week if you were selected.

A comment titled: Infomation in response to a report titled: Tensas

That is a correct statement. This is the first year that a computer will be used to select the hunters. I spoke to one of the wardens last weekend and their will be many hunters disapointed for the 2nd gun hunt due to the over abundance of entries. He notified me that he did not beleive the 1st hunt was full. Then with the less amount of hunters this year being drawn (1750) per hunt, hopefully lots more deer in the future.
