What's the best store bought ant poison out there ? Ants seem to be everywhere this spring . I poison them and they move over a few feet and build another mound .
Took my son Laitin and his buddy Mason down the Amite river for Memorial Day . We got on the water about 2 pm and the bite was on from the start .
The fish were suspended in 10-12' , over water anywhere from 15-30' . Blk/chartreuse , solid white , solid chartreuse , and electric chicken are the colors we used on both pink and orange jig heads .
Most of the 37 fish we caught were 12 inches or more . It's been a LONG time , like before Katrina that we've caught a heavy stringer of sacs like this in any of the north shore rivers . Hopefully we can go a lil while longer without another hurricane knocking the numbers back down .
Finally got on a few , between the cold fronts and work it's been difficult to catch it right . We ended up with 30 sacs and 10 bull bream and caught them on blue/black , brown/orange and a solid black hair jig , all 1/16 oz under a cork 15-16 inches deep , up next to trees and bulk heads .
Had a great day in the swamp yesterday ..... I've never seen anything like this but my son and my buddy and me went hunting and all three of us killed bucks that were chasing does . I told my son to not shoot a doe so when he saw a doe he got out his phone and began filming it . Not long after that he heard grunts coming from behind her . He stopped filming and dropped an 8 pt in his tracks . I hadn't even climbed in my tree yet and heard deer running toward me grunting . A doe passed not 10 ft from me with a 7 pt hot on her trail . I shot him as he went by and he never flinched , but ran another 60 yds and fell . While my son and me were high fiving and celebrating , my buddy shot a 5 pt that was running a doe past him .
Took my son and nephew to the swamp yesterday on the maurepas swamp youth hunt . Late yesterday afternoon they shot 3 minutes apart and both got themselves a doe !
Well my son wanted to go back to Elmer's island and get on some more of those big reds for his 15th birthday , which was Sunday , so that's exactly what we did . We took along a couple of my nieces and my nephew and had a lil fish catching B-day party .
It was the same ole cut mullet , tight lined on bottom on the Elmer's island side of caminada pass .
We went down to Grand Isle to get in on the crab action Friday afternoon . Well , the crabs have left the beach ! We did catch a couple crabs , but not enough to mess with . So , plan B , Caminada pass on Elmer's island side ... We almost didn't bring a fishing pole just because we were going crabbing only , but luckily we did ! My nephew caught a 42' redfish and my son caught a 30' red ! They were pumped to say the least . They caught a few specks too but the big reds were the highlight of the day . Everything was caught on cut mullet fished on bottom in the pass .
My son Laitin and me met up with my buddy Slim and his son Austin at the Natalbany river for an afternoon garfishing trip . We put out about 30 jugs baited with some fresh mullet . With not much tide movement , the bite was very slow at first but around 10:30 all that changed . Bam ! Lol The garfish went crazy . The first one , 130 pounder !
We chased jugs for the next couple hours , rounding them all back up . We ended up with 10 fish , I think . A couple 50#s , 35#ish 20 and so on .
It started out to be a very long and uneventful night but ended with 4 wore out fishermen with a lot of gar meat and a couple extra fish stories to tell .
My nephew came up from destrehan for the weekend to do a lil fishing . We started out on the south shore of lake maurepas fri night garfishing . We ended up with 7 small garfish and 10 descent frogs .
We rested yesterday but got up early this morning and hit natalbany river for some sacalaits . Boy it got hot quick but we still managed to get 17 and a couple bream . It took us a lil while to figure them out but they were in the lay downs with the water weeds on top of the tree in 8 - 12 fow . Most were caught on black and chartreuse tube jigs with 1/16 oz jig heads without a cork .
Tough day on the water today .. We fished the tickfaw , blood river area . My buddy Kent (aka slim) and son Austin fished with me and my son Laitin , we started out around 10:30 and didn't quit until around 5 .
We covered a lot of territory and hit some old honey holes that didn't really produce as well as they usually do . We mainly used the same ole brown and orange crawfish colored jig . The fish are there but few and far between .
We ended the day with 37 hard earned sacalait and we had a great time and some good laughs with Slim and Austin .
The day started out great with bright sunshine and calm winds . When I put the boat in the water , around noon , the sky clouded up and the wind started howling ! Not good ..
Not much clean water to be found either , everything is still pretty muddy .
I only caught 13 but was glad of that considering the poor fishing conditions . It's good to see fish made it through Isaac also .
The fish were right on the bank in the dead end canals . Caught them on solid black and brown and orange . 18 inches under a cork .
Just my opinion here , but this should be the best weekend so far this year for those of you that like to fish sacalait . The weather should be dang near perfect and the water temps should be climbing back up for the slabs to start moving up in the shallows to start their spawn .
I use dark colored jigs mainly in the spring because most of the water I fish is still a lil dingy . Blue/black , brown/orange , or solid black 16-18 inches under an unweighted cork in dead in canals or lagoons off the main body of water .
Looks like I'll be working the weekend but may call in sick ! Lol
If I were to go I'd wait till the warmest hours of the day instead of going at the crack of dawn , just to give the water a lil more time to warm from the cool nights we're suppose to have .
This should be an awesome weekend so good luck to everyone that's going ! If I get a chance , I'll be snagging some somewhere .
I'm planning on building a smoke house sometime between now and next winter . I've been looking around at different designs on line and not really settled on how I'm going to do it yet .
So if anyone has some pics of theirs , or any tips they would like to share , like what works good or not , I would greatly appreciate it !!
We went in Maurepas swamp and hit a few ridges and canal banks where there were briars and found a few rabbits . Looks like a lot made it through the storms pretty good . We did see a lot of coyote sign , guess they have to eat too .
We ended the day with 7 rabbits and a few catfish off the trot line . But it was a nice day and we had a great time .
The rut looks like its finally starting . Caught this 8 point cruising near lake maurepas this morning .
For those of you that use the doe in heat doe pee .. Do y'all leave the dip sticks out over night , or do y'all pick them up after each hunt ? I've always picked them up but a buddy said to leave them out because it may make a buck hang around .
Is this true that the master of all sportsmen has left this site ?? What will we ever do ? Now all of our dumb reports will have the same ole 3 or 4 boring comments without him !
Na ... Maybe some of the people who were always afraid to post or comment because drew-b might belittle or insult them due to their inability to spell or anything else that drew-b could find wrong with their sentences . Maybe even some of the real sportsmen with real information that left the site because of drew-b will come back and contribute actual posts and comments .
Although , sometimes it is quite funny how unexpected people respond to some of drew-bs ridiculous comments and statements .
And poor ole jls always gets swamped by drew-bs negativity . Jls is just a squirrel trying to get a nut , just like everybody else . Why does drew-b feel the need to harass this guy ?
So anyways , Drew-b ... Please come back !! We can't make it without you !!!
Put in at the public launch on tickfaw this morning . Went down to the mouth of the river looking for a few trout or croakers . Didnt get a bite .. Tryed shrimp on bottom , sparkle beetles , and chrome rattle traps .
Decided to ride to south pass to the mouth of lake P but the stiff east wind turned us around . On the way back we stopped by jones point throwing rattle trap . We caught a few bass , nothing to speak of but was glad to see that not all the freshwater fish have died .
Couldn't help to notice a couple nice camps that were obliterated by hurricane Isaac near the mouth of tickfaw . Terrible for the camp owners , I know one of the guys that owned one of these camps that was destroyed . He just retired last year and spent most of his retired life there at his camp .
I was wondering anyone's personal opinions on the survival rate of deer in Maurepas swamp and Joyce WMA . I'm sure it's wiped out the whole rabbit populations . Any high spot or log for these animals to cling to is probably full of fire ants and moccasins . There are deer that were living on the edge of the swamp and high land that makes it but I'm guessing that's a small percentage . I am seeing a lot more small road kill and even seeing more deer on the side of the road coming from work , so some do survive .
There were 5000 nutria carcasses washed up on Mississippis coast that they say drowned from Isaac . Now that's an aquatic mammal , so it can't be good for deer and rabbit .
90 % of our hunting season is on these WMAs and it's not looking good this year . I can't remember when the water got this high for such a long period of time . I'm interested in others opinions on the matter , good or bad .. Thanks
Just heard from a reliable source that freshwater fish were starting to pool up in the shallows , gasping for air , down the Amite river . Apparently these fish are about to die .
My question ... Is it against the law to scoop these fish up with a dip net ? They will only die and rot away ...
