OK fellers, it's comin and I know nobody really knows where it will hit exactly yet, BUT...this is just to let everyone know, if you're figgerin on leavin & headin north towards Shreveport, I'm sittin on 2 acres just outside of Minden (20 minutes east of Bossier City) that will hold quite a few boats, trailers, etc. if needed. Also, I'm on a dead end road so not much worry about vandalism. Anyone interested, call Guy @ 318-371-2719. If I don't answer, let the machine pick it up and I'll call back. I go back to work Monday evening, but the wife will be around and she can get word to me. Let us know if we can help...good luck and God bless us all.
I know I haven't posted in awhile...schedule change at work.
Anyway...Jackson Anthon Clack arrived yesterday, Saturday, May 2, 2008 at 2:19 PM. Daughter is doing fine...(her first) Son-in-Law is doing good too...haha. Jackson weighed in at 9 lbs. 3 ozs. and is 20 1/2" long. He came from the DEEP end of the gene pool...hehe. I'm looking forward to teaching another kid to fish.
Anybody fishin Big Lake???? How bout it fishintom, redeye, ems????
Had to take the Number One Son down to Dulac to catch a boat to his new job a couple of weeks ago. (His car's in the shop...don't ask) It was pretty early in the AM when we got down there but it sure seems like that area oughta have a few fish around. I might could see my way clear to tryin it out maybe. Is there a launch or ramp somewhere near Dulac or would I have to go all the way in to Cocodrie? I saw a lot of big shrimp boats tied up...is there a chance a fella could buy some good eatin size shrimps? What's more popular...live bait or artificials? What type of either? (I already know what Capt John L will say, ha ha) What's the most prevalent species...trout, reds, flounder? I'm sure there's a guide or two in that area, but I do have the big green Kenner and I sure would like to know it was a little more that yard art, if ya know what I mean. Does that bayou or canal or whatever it is in Dulac a good place to try or is the marsh better. What about the near platforms in the Gulf. Y'all can tell by now I don't have a clue about the area, so have a little pity, a little patience. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Keeep your bait wet.
Well, I said I'd tell everyone how we did. We got into Spicer's last Thursday evening and the wimmen wanted to fish. We talked Mr. Spicer out of a few dead shrimp and they were dunking them off his pier and the wife caught a couple of nice sheepshead and a 25 # black drum. That was fun. I was beginning to think we might be there at the right time. First thing Friday morning, went to get bait and Spicer's were OUT. 6:30 AM and no shrimp. OK, we'll just wing it. We got out to the channel and pulled into Davis' place and picked up a few small shrimp. Good to go. We headed south and fished around 4 corners for a bit. Nothing. Eased around trying different points, reefs, anyplace I thought might have a fish or two. Got a bite, set the hook on a hardhead. Oh, well, it's a start. Swung the fish in the boat, and it bounced or flipped or something and ended up with his top fin BURIED in my left calf. I jerked him out and he'd hit a vein. Bled like a stuck hog for a bit, filled my shoe with blood, made a mess of the boat. That was pretty much the highlight of the first day. Not one keeper fish on Friday. More tomorrow.
Hey fellas...it was just a simple question about a trolling motor. ems, cobia 1, and salt...thanks for the input. As far as this other stuff goes... I'm not the end all and be all when it comes to fishin, but I have been involved in a big way for 48 years and I have pictures to prove it. Caught my first fish, a rainbow trout, when I was 3 years old. In all that time I can't think of a time when I tried to shove my opinion of how to fish, where to fish, what bait to use, what boat to have, what motor to have on it, etc., etc., down anyones throat. Fishing is pure pleasure to me and in my whole life, all I've ever wanted to do was try and share that with as many people as I could, especially kids. I joined this little club here thinking that maybe I could learn some new tricks, get some insight on trout and reds, maybe even find a new friend to fish with or swap stories with. Stupid on my part I guess. Or maybe naive is a better term. I don't fish professionally and never will. It's not about competitiveness with me, and I won't knock anyone that has that drive. I just like being on the water. I probably won't be posting anymore questions and I'll have to think about any fishing reports. I really didn't mean to stir all this stuff up.
Does anyone out there have one of them new-fangled Minn Kota 3X model trolling motors? I just installed one and I hope I'm wrong but it sure looks like every time you pull it up and park it, you have to loosen the little collar and let it roll around til it sits right on the plastic rails of the mounting bracket, then re-tighten the collar. So that means when you get to your next fishin spot, you have to loosen the collar again and try to reset the motor with the handle (forget the directional arrow; it ain't happenin) from standing on the point of the bow, which will be interesting, to say the least. In the course of a long day that may happen a dozen times. Am I missing something here? Little help, folks, please.
I had a fella tell me a long time ago that a boat was a hole in the water that you threw money into. Never truer words were spoken, but God help, I love it so. Went to BPS in Bossier City last night. Picked up the new Keelguard, side bunks, and ordered the new trolling motor. Hopefully it'll get here in time. This morning I'm fixing a flat, getting the tires all balanced, and replacing the bilge pump. I still have to re-wire the baitwell pump, and figure out what the heck is wrong with the bow light. Just another day in paradise.
New here...just want to intro myself...hope y'all will be hearing a lot from me in the future. I've got a big green Kenner...23 footer. We fish out of Spicer's in Hackberry when we get the chance...matter of fact we're headed that way in a couple of weeks. By "we" I mean me, wife , and Mom. I took them last year and created two MONSTERS. In fact they BOTH got a Cajun Slam the first time. More on that later. Anyway, they love it and I'm a lucky fella.
That's it for now, just glad to be on board finally.
Hey ems, sorry to hear about your motor troubles. I'm not real sure what the rules are, but...the second time we all went down to Spicer's, as we were idling out through the bayou to get to the channel, my motor went hot and shut down. I threw the trolling motor down and eased over to one of the shrimper's docks to let it cool off. (there wasn't a boat tied up) Anyway, the Wife & Mom got bored and flung a few shrimp out around that dock and TORE THEM UP! We sat right there and caught a box full. Reds, trout, sheepshead, and drum. We didn't move even after the motor cooled off. So. I don't know if it's cool to even ask if you can fish off one of those docks, or if it would do you any good to fish off the bank right next to one, but it would be worth the effort to me. Good luck. By the way, it's a dang shame our days off don't coincide...I could be easily convinced to bring the big green kenner and go with ya'll.
I understand that Dodge is comin out with a lil Cummins diesel in the half ton next year (08). I don't know about the other brands...I drive a 3/4 ton Dodge diesel now and even tho I KNOW I'll get hammered about it...it wouldn't matter to me if ford or chevy came out with a diesel or not.
Thanx a bunch for the info fellers...sounds like I got a little plan to work on. And don't worry bout me goin in the marsh blind...I'll have the GPS doin its thing and if anything, I'll be TOO careful. Safety first ya know.
We met last month at Spicer's one evening...Wife and Mom were fishing off his dock and we used your pliers, remember?
If that don't jog your noggin...Mr. Twister?...Anyhow, it looks like you're doin good and I'm glad for ya. Wished I'da took you up on a trip that next day...disaster is much too mild a description. Maybe we can get down there next month or early September...don't know for sure. Keep your bait wet , man.
Way I hear everbody tell about Lowrance support is that it SUCKS. I've got one on the blink myself and because it's so old (99), nobody wants to fool with it. I'm leaning towards a Garmin or a Hummingbird. I'm even thinkin bout 2 units, one GPS, one graph. Any comments out there fellers??????
23' Kenner w/ 225 Merc...rolled gunnel...54 gps full of gas & 3 fisher persons...big, roomy, stable.
Yer KILLIN me...
Sometimes it all goes just right, don't it.
Nice job Capt. I gotta figger out a way to get to your neck of the woods someday. Love chunkin plastic and I'm gettin low on shrimps myself. Oh, yeah, condolences on the MinnKota, and I agree bout the MG.
If you've ever seen an aluminum gettin bounced and blowed around on Big Lake one time, you wouldn't have to ask Mark.
Fiberglass CC. Big as you can afford.
Nice pics coot...cherish every moment with the little ones...they grow up so fast. I've got 4 of my own and 2 steps (might as well be mine) and they're all grown and in the wind most of the time. Sure miss the times like you're havin.
Thanx E-man. Sometimes I get the notion it's a pretty thankless task, but then someone comes along and says it ain't so.
Looks like a great time in SPITE of the wind. Nice goin, coot.
Man, I wish I'd followed you around Friday. The wind was awful and after being finned' I really wasn't happy about being there anyway. Hadda cowboy up that day...LOL. Oh yeah, I almost forgot...the Lowrance died that morning, too.
Maybe I'm a little testy right now cuz I'm workin too much. LOL. I'm on my 8th day and have 3 to go. Thanx for the upliftin comments tho Capts. By the way Capt Bob, where from in Calif originally...that rainbow I caught at 3 yrs old was caught out of the upper Kern River north of Bakersfield. Mom said I carried it around til it was mummified...LOL.
Capt John L., I might just take you up on that invite, if I can ever get over that way, but I think I'm about as far as I can be from you and still be in the state. I'm sorry if it seemed like I flew off the handle for a minute, but with a wife, 6 kids between us, and 3 grandkids , I get all the drama I need at home, if ya know what i mean. Fishin is what I do to get AWAY from all that.
Jeez fellas, I didn't mean to start WW3, LOL. I do love this site. I appreciate all the help, tho. I'll do a little more diggin and see if I've got something outta adjustment. By the way, EMS, when are you gunna be down there...I'm leavin for Big Lake on Thursday mornin.
P.S.
I took a 82# Motor Guide digital off the ol' Kenner. It died a violent death due to a fried board...never again.
Heck no, I'm at work right now. ( go ahead, feel sorry for me) I thought I'd post in that reagion to see if anyone might have one of those motors, seeing as how it's a saltwater model, and I wasn't sure if the fresh water models have the same setup.
I'm a Mindenite, right next door.
I got my 9 footer at Bass Pro in a package deal...boat, 30 lb. Minn Kota, battery with one of those fancy battery boxes, and 2 swivel seats for around $800.00 and I wouldn't take for it. I love it. I put an old Humminbird LCD on it (put the transducer on the trolling motor). It has no problem haulin my fat butt around. One thing tho, I ended up putting it on an old trailer I had sittin around. It was a little too heavy for me to lift in and out of my truck loaded. (The kids call it Dad's Tupperware boat):)
