New To Sportsman Network?

I would use the Weather contact and get a Monthly Tide Chart on It looks like the charts no longer show the shaded areas which would indicate the best times to fish. This was always a good tool for me. Is this format still available on the site anywhere? If so, let me know, as I cannot locate it or maybe I am not formatting the data correctly. Any help or thoughts on this greatly appreciated.

These are from earlier Poster.

I am looking for a new Truck and am looking for input from anyone who launches out of Pointe ala hache at Beshel's Marina.

I have issues with the ramp when pulling a Large 23ft fiberglass boat out the launch.

My REAR wheels start spinning when the wheels hit the gravel area and ruts in the area from prior boats digging a small hole.
We were able to get the boat out the hole, but it was work.
Launching should not be WORK.

Will the new Ford F150 V6 small engines handle this?

Will the added feature of Limited Slip Differential handle this issue?

Looking for input from anyone that had (has) similar issues with the Launch.

It would be great if Beshel's would extend the Concrete and the problem would be solved.

But until then, trying to be an informed buyer.

Thanks for your input and suggestions.

for Uni Knot example.

Power Pro recommends the UNI KNOT.

I tried it and it seems to work extremely well for braided line and regular line also.

I have inserted a couple of links for how to tie a Uni Knot.

Hope this helps.

A lot of Trout have been pulled out of the Little Crevasse Area and Bakers Bay area off Oak River.

The Trout are always on the move. So depending upon the water temperature, wind direction, Tide range, etc.

I would suggest that you contact Captain Jack Payne at Sweetwater Marina. He has put me on some beautiful trout as well as Reds.

He is willing to share his knowledge.

Ask him and you shall receive.

Tell Captain Jack that Tommy J of Harvey referred you.

January 27, 2014 at 7:26am

Sweetwater Marina is situated directly in front of
Bayou Gentilly.
Captain Jack Payne can provide you with insight where to target the reds and trout.

He has fishing supplies, charts and great service at his launch.

His Launch is the second one down towards Delacroix.

You can see Bayou Gentilly from his Launch.

Hope this aids anglers with a picture of the area and to give a visual of how Great a Location that Sweetwater Marina provides to anglers and Hunters.

Does anyone know where this oil came from?
Is the LDWF aware of the Oil in Violet Canal?

May 09, 2013 at 7:23pm

We fished out of Hopedale on Saturday, May 4.
Not much luck.
On the way back home, we saw two big black sheens in Violet Canal.
Does anyone know what this was in the canal? We saw it around 2:00pm.

Friday Fishing Report
April 20, 2012

Launched out of Joshua's Marina Friday morning. Frelich's did not have any live bait.

Fished with dead shrimp and plastics.

2 reds 1 Drum
Water was dirty.

Fished not far from the Marina. Just poked around various broken Islands.

No birds working yet in the area.

Hopefully, that will change by June 1.

April 22, 2012 at 1:08pm

We launched out of SWEETWATER Marina with numerous other boats. You would have thought they were giving something away.

Fishing was good, but the Ramp to Launch the boat is too steep when you are removing the boat out of the water. My tires were spinning and burning and smoking. I thought it might be just me, but the boat in front of me and behind me were having the same problem.
Glad for the people that helped by jumping in the back of the various trucks to help the back tires get traction and remove the boats.

Anyone else have concerns or problems with the ramp. There was one truck, with a 4 wheel drive and Diesel engine that appeared to do OK with the ramp.

Hopefully the good people at Sweetwater Marina can fix their slope on the downramp.

November 26, 2011 at 9:48am

Launched out of Joshua's Marina Saturday morning.
Picked up live shrimp from Frelich's
35 cents if you pay with Cash
40 cents if you pay with Credit Card

Headed towards the beach area close to the Empire Rock Jetties.

Getting out there was aggravating as I am not that familiar with the water close to the Jetties, but there are several areas that are very shallow. I did not damage my lower unit, thank goodness.

Tried several areas around, but only able to get 1 trout using the live shrimp.

The catfish were all over.

So I decided to head back towards Joshua Marina and fish the Islands close in.

No trout, but full of Redfish and Drum.

Also caught one flounder.

It looks like the Hopedale area has cleaner water compared to Buras area. Therefore, holding more fish.

Also the Pogie plant is up and running, so the smell is terrible near the Buras Canal.

August 07, 2011 at 7:35am

Looks like alot of people watched Frank Davis' fishing report the other night.
There were several boats around Pelican Pointe, other fishermen said they were heading to IRON BANKS.

Report was right, the fish want shrimp right now.
The bigger trout were caught with live shrimp.
Not much action on the plastic where we fished.

The shrimp at Beshel's Marina were extremely nice shrimp. No small ones mixed in the batch. Lively and stayed alive for the trip out.

Water was calm early morning, but then the wind picked up a little.

Always good to be on the water on conditions like today.

July 30, 2011 at 3:07pm

Anyone use any type of Anti-glare screen for their GPS units out on the Water?

Just curious to see if anyone had any recommendations.

I see where NuShield DayVue offers a product.

Thanks for any insight and or recommendations.

July 17, 2011 at 4:15pm

Does anyone have any reports from Belle Island lately?

Has the water around Belle Island been OK lately?

Any specks coming from this Area.

It's been awhile since I launched from Beshel's Marina.

Does Beshel have their Hoist running yet?

Has Beshel's been having any Live Shrimp for the Fishermen?

July 16, 2011 at 8:12pm

We just noticed a couple of cracks on both sides of the Lower Unit Housing on the Outboard Motor.

Anyone have a used lower unit for a replacement or any suggestions of who would have one.

July 13, 2011 at 3:45pm

Report from Wednseday, out of Black Bay area.

They had to work a little harder Wednesday than normal.
Had to make 3 stops instead of the normal 2.

Isn't it a shame in SE Louisiana, you get spoiled with sometimes only having to make two stops.

But all fish caught 2' under a popping cork.

Back at dock before 9:45am

Glad to be able to beat the heat.

Very few White Trout in this area.

Majority nice big Specks.

It sure is fun when you have a double or triple going in the boat at the same time.

Good time was had by all.

After using Explorer to copy *.usr file to Micro SD card, I successfully loaded the waypoints and tracks to my new Lowrance Elite 5 GPS Unit.

There is a program GPSBabel that is available for free and works well in translating GPS data from one format to another.

After conversion, then load or copy onto SD card and then load to Lowrance Unit in my case.

Saved hours of tedious manual input one by one.

June 18, 2011 at 5:08pm

Captain Paul:

I wasn't able to save the *.usr file to the Micro SD Card using the GDM6 for some reason. Kept getting an error message saving error occurred while saving file. I am using Windows 7. I do not know what causes this file not to be saved to the SD Card.

However, what did work was using Explorer and copied the file from the c: drive to the Micro SD Card. That worked. I tested the GDM6 program to make sure the waypoints were viewable using the data from the Micro SD Card.

My next step will be to upload the file to my Lowrance Elite 5 system. I hope it transfers over smoothly.

Thanks again for all your help.

This method may help others if they have the same problem.

One more thing, I just found out that the Garmin Mapsource product lets you view the map using Google Earth. That is a Cool feature. Really helps pinpoint tracks that you have and waypoints.

Let's you see water changes, etc.

Had I known this prior to purchasing my Lowrance, I would have purchased a Garmin to replace my Garmin Handheld.

Does Lowrance map GDM6 have any feature like this?
I did not see it upon my looking.

June 17, 2011 at 10:22pm

We were expecting low winds, but that did not happen.

We were expecting OK water, that did not happen.

Against our better judgement, we decided to go anyway.

Tried a few areas, nothing but hard heads.

Finally came across some birds working, got on a good bite under the birds. Trout were small but still held cornmeal.

Please be courteous with other Boats that are already fishing the Birds. I do not mind sharing fish, but if a Boat comes 40mph in the birds, guess what, the Specks will be spooked and no one gets the fish.

When approaching diving birds, use a trolling motor and give the first guy as much room as possible.

I know the weekend warriors deserve time on the water, but please be patient so everyone catches fish.

Per Bob Gourgues:
The tide data he would use is Pelican Islands. Be sure to add 1.5 hours to tides.

Hope this helps.

Year 2010 Truck Engine info from Ford
5.4L 3V V8 with 310 hp and 365 lb.-ft. of torque
(Regular gas)

It looks like newer engines are producing more torque than older Models.
Ford now says 2.7L V6 with Ecoboost provides 375 lbs of torque.

That is 10lbs more than the V8 from the year 2010.

Do you have the 4x4 2010 model?

A comment titled: Top Spots for Winter in response to a report titled: Captain Jack Payne's Delacroix Spots

We may have to Contact Captain Jack Payne to see what spots are his top picks for the Cold Weather times.

Although, the forecast is back up into the 70s for the weekend, so maybe its time to forget about Cold/Winter Spots.

A comment titled: Check this Map out for Hot Spots in response to a report titled: Oak river

The Trout are always on the Move.

I would strongly recommend that you talk to Captain Jack Payne with Sweetwater Marina.

Tell Him that Tommy J of Harvey referred you.

Captain Jack is willing to share his spots.
He has put me on some Great Sized Trout and Reds also.

Hope this helps.

You have to be careful of low water during Winter time. So knowing if the tide is Falling or Rising is critical this time of the year.

I have heard some say that the Falling Tide is Best for fishing the inside of Delacroix.

But you have to time it so you know where you are when Low Tide happens, otherwise you may have to wait for the water to rise to get off the Flats.

A push pole is recommended for this area as well.

A comment titled: Oak River via Pencil Canal in response to a report titled: Oak river

I do not know if this is the safest route, but I take Bayou Gentilly out, then head towards the Pencil Canal.

Once you are in the Pencil Canal, head up the Canal til you reach OAK RIVER.

Talk to Captain Jack Payne at Sweetwater Marina.

He has charts of the area and can give you information on how to get to the Fish.

This number is the last number I had for Beshel's Marina. I am not sure if this is still current or not, but you could give it a try.

A comment titled: Academy Sports in response to a report titled: Pliers

I purchased my needle nose pliers from Academy.
The one I purchased were the long needle nose pliers in case I have to go far down a fish's mouth to remove the hook.
They work great. I left them out one time, but sprayed some lubricant on them and they worked fine.

Have to keep the pliers out of high humidity. Keep them well oiled and they should work fine.

A comment titled: Fishing Magician in response to a report titled: Not pleased with service

I can certainly recommend Fishing Magician Charter service out of Shell Beach.

They also have a lodge available. I believe the rate is $50 per night.

Sleep at the lodge, wake up and walk to the Dock.
Launch, stop at Campo's for live shrimp, and you are on your way for a good time.

It doesn't get any better than that.

Look at all the pictures on here with the results.

We even had six (6) people in our crew and Captain Jason was able to make sure everyone caught fish.

Do not let one bad experience spoil future attempts.

A comment titled: Belle Island in response to a report titled: Belle Island, Black Bay

I was trying to get latest information from a fellow fisherman on the Belle Island area.

I enjoy launching out of Beshel's because it provides access to normally good fishing spots with a shorter boat ride.

Whenever possible I try to minimize Boat ride as much as possible.

So if anyone has any recent experience with fishing Belle Island, please provide any insight.

July 20, 2011 at 4:19pm

The GPS tool is useful, but remember that the Marsh areas have shallow waters. Water Height also varies with tide range.

So whenever venturing out to new waters in the Marsh, you must be careful and avoid shallow areas.

I do not believe the Google Earth provides the depth of the Marsh Waters.

Something to consider when making a TRACK via a computer as opposed to making a TRACK on your GPS while on the actual water you are traveling.

July 18, 2011 at 11:03am

Thanks for the detail instructions.

I came across some of the information will using my Mapsource with my handheld Garmin.

I was not aware of the Google Route tool. Thanks for the helpful insight.

It is a great feature.

I look forward to using the tool in the future.

A comment titled: Birds were closer in in response to a report titled: Empire Report - Thursday

Birds were surprisingly closer inside. We were hoping to make it in the Gulf, but the wind was too strong for that.

Water closer inside was not great but must have been holding some shrimp as the birds were after them. Bird action is fast and furious.

A comment titled: Admiral Rabbit in response to a report titled: Stone Island holding large Trout

What about the 'Wreck'? I have only been to the Wreck once. The day was strange, bait was all over the place. Only caught a few trout. Now the trout were big ones, but only a few. Heard of good reports from the Wreck and the Dope Boat, but I have not made it to those places very often.

Hopefully the wind will start to lay down and let the small boats venture out.

A comment titled: Live Shrimp scarce at Beshel's in response to a report titled: Stone Island holding large Trout

I called Beshel's marina today, they do not have Live Shrimp currently. Not sure when they would have any. Said close in is full of river water.

So if you plan to fish Stone Island and you want Live Shrimp, you may want to consider launching out of Delacroix. You should be able to get the live shrimp there. Delacroix is a little bit longer boat run, but the Shrimp is the ticket for the Large trout at Stone Island.
