New To Sportsman Network?

I was sitting in awe today while KVD was pulling fish after fish out of the tank pond at Cataouatche. It made me feel 'lucky' and 'blessed'. To think, in my backyard, there's a place that can potentially set a Bassmaster Classic record for the heaviest 3 day haul. Thats awesome! I realize that many of you have known this for years, but I just have to say, we really do live in a fisherman's/sportsman's paradise.

P.S. lets do our best not to screw it up.

I don't know their circumstances, but to be out on the lake with these winds was not a good idea. I pray they find the 4th person and he/she is ok.

I live about 5 minutes from Natalbany/Tickfaw river and want to start teaching the kids to fish. Gonna start with sacalait, perch, bream, small fish. What do you think the best baits are, and if its live baits, whats the best way to rig um? specifically crickets? Thanks!

Anyone been catching fish out the pass or on the powerlines in Manchac? I'm thinking about giving it a shot this evening. Thanks for the info!

Got a little camping trip planned with the family (first time out) and I need some good campfire type recipes to try out. My pop-up doesn't have a microwave or an oven, so it needs to be stove/camp fire related cooking. Thanks!!

Was nice meeting up with you and JR. My wife and I finished the day with 7 total keepers. Tossed a few egg toting females back, as well as some small ones. I found them in that oxbow, and at that dock JR and I were talking about. Not shallow though. Hopefully we can get the water to clear up a tad.

Try fishing sacalait. I catch a few bass here and there but do best fishing old tree tops and docks for sacs. Rice field canal is a good spot for bass. Might wanna give that a shot.

A comment titled: not rich in response to a report titled: King Obama affordable health care

Mike, I'm not rich by any means. My post was a bit of sarcasm. My point was this. I worked for a union shop for a few years. I used to hear union members complain about the union day in and day out. But, each and every one continued to pay dues. They wouldn't attend a single union meeting, send a letter to the national union, nothing. Only complain. People in the U.S. do the same when it comes to politics and policy. The politicians can do what ever they want, as long as people blindly contribute. I'm thinking it's time to stop the contributions.

A comment titled: early retirement? in response to a report titled: King Obama affordable health care

You know, I tired of hearing all the older guys at my work complain about having to wait until they turn 62/65 to retire, because they can't afford healthcare. My solution. I'm gonna work hard for a few more years. Pay off most of my bills. Sell the house for the equity. Buy a cheap unrestricted lot near Toledo Bend. Build a small but livable place for my family, that has a minimal property tax. Quit my great paying full time job for a part time job. Combine that income with my investment income, which is not considered an earned income. Get on my FREE!!! heath care plan. Then fish and hunt until my judgement day. I'm gonna let the fools who willfully contribute to the trash heap our government keeps piling on top of us. Keep contributing please!!! Life doesn't have to be hard if you learn to live simple. The ACA gives me a wonderful reason to retire before I'm 40. I don't particularly like working shift work anyway.

You would not have starved working for me. I believe a man should be paid a fair wage, including benefits. I'm easy. If your work is worthy of the pay, I'll pay.
A contract is set up between employee/employer. Not some labor lawyer with a chip on his/her shoulder. I want to keep good people. Not be forced to keep bad.
The wage depends on the man. I'm not going to pay a 1st class welder, who can only weld carbon steel and stainless, the same pay as the 1st class welder that can weld both of the above, plus monel, and hastelloy. I'm not going to pay 2 deckhands the same wage, if one of the deckhands continues to miss ties causing barges to slip.
It's the 'Pay for the title, not the work' mentality that drives me. I worked in a union shop. My work was not as good as some, but better than most. I didn't expect to get paid the same as the man doing the best work, or all the work in some cases.
Unions were great when safety, or lack thereof, was an issue. When sick days were non existant. When people were working 16 hr days for pennies. The government has stepped in most cases. A minimum wage was set up. You know the story.
I believe in personal responsibility. It's about choice. If you feel you're worth more, find a way to make more. If you're not happy with your wage, find better. When I was met with the same choice, it's what I did.

I hope you have a Merry Christmas, and a happy New Year as well. Thank you btw.

I know exactly what I would do if you came to work for me. As soon as I recieved the union cards, shop closed. I'de hang an 'Out of Buisness' sign on the door, burn my equipment, and go fishing. 'Who is John Galt?'

I don't think the idea of todays unions are what we had 40 years ago. Workers unions, and I was part of one (United Steel Worker), if you read the literature, is all about socialism. It protects the ones that says: 'Thats not my job,' The one that does little to nothing and expects the world. As for the NRA/CCA these are organizations, not unions, that are created and supported by individuals who support the particular cause, Good or bad. My thought is, be selfish! The government, as well as the people living on the system are doing the same. Give a good days work for a good days pay. Live for what is good for you, and no matter what, understand that good will was not designed for moochers. Be faithfull, and live a moral life. But take care of yourself, and your neighbors.

There are things that tax paying, hard working Americans can do.

#1 Everyone file married and 9 on your W-4's. (the key here would be that you would still have to save your money, instead of giving the money in weekly/biweekly payments, you hold it until the next filing season)

#2 Quit. Stop working. Take off. If you have no income, the government can't confiscate it. (I recommend not attempting this unless your debt free, and live in a home that is totally covered by the homestead exemption)

#3 Stop voting like idiots. Understand who it is your voting for. Do some homework. (probably the easiest way)

It wasn't pushing back as of this morning, but with this southeast wind its hard to say what it'll look like tomorrow. If you fish around Ruddock you'll probably be fine.

A comment titled: fishing near home. in response to a report titled: Fishing

You could try along the shore/stumps along the ponchatrain lakeshore near the spillway (for specs). Try topwater baits early, maybe swap to plastics and hit the power lines when the sun is high. Looks like the wind should be light early. You could probably get in a good day before the wind blows you of the lake. Launch at the back of the spillway or Peavine. good luck!!

Shimano Spirex on a 6'8' med/heavy 'Deadly Dudley' Castaway rod. Been fishing this combo for over a year, both fresh and saltwater. It's been real good to me.

you can try the Ruddock area. Hit the canals north of the launch. Try throwing a worm or lizard. Look for grass along the banks, and fish slow. Also, try to hit the culverts under old 51. gl!

A comment titled: Ironman in response to a report titled: United States Marine Corps

Why go reserve if you plan on going active duty later? I did exactly that, went in on a 6 and 2 and wound up doing 2 years reserve, 6 active. You might as well go all out if your gonna do it. Just my op Then you only have 4 years to decide if it what you want instead of 6.

Also, talk to you recruiter about being a contract PFC. Nothings better getting promoted out of boot.

One more thing, I did this myself. I went in as an admin, was staioned at 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, New Orleans, LA, as a reservist. I realized it wasn't for me so I applied for Marine Corps Security Guard, went in front of a board, and got it. Served on MSG duty for 4 years. Good Luck!
