Anybody have a report on Lake Chicot? Going for a couple of days this week and wondering if anyone is catching any sac au lait.

February 13, 2016 at 6:30pm

This is not a good report, but I'm not sure why. Got to Elmer's about 7:30 (maybe that's why-late)and fished until 10:30. Water was a little brownish, but clear enough for the fish to see the bait and wind from the northeast had everything nice and calm. All in all, a beautiful day to surf fish! Caught a few small trout and some tiny whites, but no keepers. Moved down to Grand Isle and fished the rocks around the water tower for a couple of hours. Water was about the same and so were the results. Oh well, it was nice and cool in that water and better than being in Baton Rouge begging my AC to keep up with that heat!

August 23, 2014 at 8:05pm

Wind was out of the NNW this morning, the surf was flat and the water was clean enough to see your shoes at knee deep. Seaweed has been cleaned up on the beaches. Got out to the rocks near the water tower at 6:00 AM and fished until around 8:00. Caught 8 nice trout. Hope it continues for the 4th of July fishers.

Yesterday evening about 6:30 caught 2 trout, 1 redfish and a black drum in the same area.

July 02, 2014 at 9:33pm

Seaweed is all along the beach - anywhere from 10 to 30 feet from water's edge and up to 2 feet deep in spots. It's nasty. If you can get through it and wade past the worst of it, the water is fairly clear, but you still have more weed to deal with on your retrieve.
I did catch 2 redfish in a pond at the state park and 1 trout and 1 flounder along the road to Elmer's Island.

Going to camp at the state park Thurs. and Fri.and bring the boat. Have not fished there before and would appreciate any advice as to how to catch sac au lait in the lake. Jigs? Shiners?

Went down to Bason's Landing hoping to find some trout in the deep hole by the launch. None! Went on to the Sulphur Mine and anchored on the side near the pumping station. Fished with Gulps - some tipped with shrimp and some not. Ended up with limits of black drum and 2 short of a limit of red fish. Could have caught many more black drum. Great day on the water

Water in the Sulphur Mine area today was clear green and loaded with trout. Started on the South side of the lake and boated a nice bunch of 13' trout. Moved out into the canals and drains nearby and found some monsters looking for what was washing out of the ponds. Great December day on the water. Three of us ended with 51 trout and most of them were snagged with a Shiney Hiney in Chatreuse or Clear color - that is all they wanted - very choosey today.

December 09, 2011 at 9:15pm

Set out this morning with high hopes for a beautiful calm day in the marsh and we weren't disappointed. Launched at Bason's Landing and went straight to the Sulphur Mine where we found some nice trout on the South side, as the wind was out of the N and NE. Caught them on Shiney Hiney with chatreuse tails, chatreuse beetles under a cork and DD terror tails in a Blue Moon on the bottom. Decided to do a little traveling for a change of pace and found some more fish hanging around cuts in the marsh where the tide/wind was moving water out. Great day on the water - 3 fishers ended up with 40 trout, 1 really big red and 1 black drum. I'm so thankful that I live in Louisiana!

Got to Bason's about 10:00 AM today - hard to get the crew all gathered and moving out of Baton Rouge, and then biscuits and bathroom stops, etc. Started in the Sulphur Mine on the South shoreline as the wind was out of the Northeast when we arrived. Picked up a few trout on assorted artificials and decided to hit the canals behind the oil/gas structures at noon - one redfish. Went back into the mine about 2:30 and found some birds working on the East side over nice trout where we picked up a few more. Left at 3:30 with a dozen good trout and 1 redfish. Water was root beer colored with just fair clarity; very little tide movement during the day. Best baits: SWA Chicken on a chain, SWA Morning glory w/chatreuse tail, White sparkle beetle - some were tipped with shrimp.

Where can I get a detailed map of the lower Atchfalaya Basin for my GPS. I have a Lowrance Elite 5 and it's fine for the coast, but is no help at all for fishing the basin.

August 10, 2011 at 4:29pm

Intellecast called for a 30% max cance of rain and less than 10 mph winds, so we decided to head over to Bason's and see what we could dredge up from the flats in the Sulphur Mine - glad we brought the rain gear. Saw a couple of boats fishing the deep hole next to the landing and decided to try our luck there. Got lucky and caught about 3 dozen trout between 10:00 and noon with chautreuse beetles. The constant rain stopped long enough to pass out the sandwiches and almost eat half of one before it started again. Fortified, we struck out for the Sulphur Mine to see if trout reports we eavesdropped on this morning were true - not. (Sound does really carry over water fellow fisherpersons.) After bouncing around in the wind and rain for a while, we anchored on a point on the South side of the Mine and found redfish galore. Caught all we wanted to clean on dead shrimp or morning glory with chautreuse tail plastics and left them biting. Hope it lasts.

Had a good time Saturday out of Bason's Marina in Galiano. got a late start (10:00 A. M.) and fished the canals around the Sulphur Mine with out much luck. Ended up back in the mine and found some late afternoon action under a bunch of birds. Finished with a limit of trout and 1 redfish - didn't seem to matter what you used. We were throwing plastics and others we saw were using dead shrimp - they caught more than we did. Water was just clear enough.

November 20, 2010 at 9:09pm

OK, so its not a lot, but they were nice and we had a great time. Launched at Campo's this morning about 8:00 AM, armed with some beautiful shrimp and advice from the guys at the marina. We made our way into Lake Borgne, where the water was perfect and the wind was blowing just enough to keep us cool. No luck with the shrimp, but SWA Chicken on a Chain (slow on the bottom) did the trick. Caught them around the pilings and the weather station just as you enter the lake. Thanks to the guys at Campo's for welcoming a couple of displaced Grand Isle fishers who desperately needed a fishing fix.

I haven't been in a long time, and was wondering if the launch at Point Barre is still open and what its condition is. Also, is there a way to get to the Wonder Lake area from the Montegut Marina? I'd appreciate any information.

Merry Christmas to all!

December 25, 2009 at 7:56am

Wind! Wednesday we launched at Bridgeside Marina and mostly looked around the islands in Caminada Bay area trying to find clean water. Found a little school of trout while hiding from the wind and drying off in a little cove near the first oyster reef. After they moved, we found another sheltered spot between the bridge and the pass and finished the morning catching channel mullet with dead shrimp on the bottom. Trout were caught with SA Chicken-On-A-Chain. Thursday - more wind! Didn't even try to put the boat in the water, but caught a couple of trout in the canal behind the Fourchon Port Commission. If you can't fish this weekend, go see the birds.

April 17, 2009 at 7:06am

Left Baton Rouge with rain gear, towels and a change of clothes, fully prepared to use all today, headed to the Sulphur Mine between Larose and Galliano. Put in at Bason's Marina about 10:00 A. M. and promptly started pulling in trout in the Sulphur Mine flats on the East side. Best bait was the Reaction lure in purple w/ chatreuse tail on a slow lift and fall. Had a 2 person limit by 2:00 P. M. and we were still dry. Great day!

December 30, 2007 at 10:44pm

I spent Thursday afternoon fishing the bridges and ditches along LA 1 between Grand Isle and Fourchon. The water was very low, and after about 2 hours without a bite, moved on to a canal at Fourchon behind the Port Comission Building. There is a culvert that runs beneath the road and connects the canal to a large shallow lake. I got there near the end of the falling tide and first cast with a SWA in "Opening Night" brought in a big red fish. Kept walking the bank and managed to find some nice trout with a glow beetle fished slowly on the bottom - real light bite - lots of fun!

December 28, 2007 at 5:40pm

Beautiful weekend in Grand Isle. Put the boat in at Bridgeside Marina and headed back to the oyster reefs. Lots of PVC poles with red flags have been added, so the area is easy to locate once you get past the two little islands in Caminada Bay. We fished with plastics about 2' under a cork and ended up with a nice mix of white and speckled trout Saturday evening and again Sunday morning. The wind picked up while we fished Sunday morning, so we took the boat out of the water, cleaned it up and tried a little side-of-the-road fishing that evening - no fish, but the gnats didn't bite! Happy Thanksgiving!

November 19, 2007 at 8:34pm

Got a late start today in the Sulphur Mine. Put in at Bason's Marina about 10:00 A. M. and some guys coming out said they caught limts of trout under diving birds. We didn't see any birds and fished all over the lake and some nearby canals with spotty success. Best luck in the middle of the mine at about 12 - 13 ft. deep, on the bottom, with white beetles tipped with shrimp --> nice white trout. Beautiful day - where else but South Louisiana could you fish is shorts and short-sleeved shirts in the middle of November?

November 10, 2007 at 10:28pm

Picked up a few trout in the canals around the Sulphur Mine today, but the best bite was in the flats on the East side of the lake - after noon. Warm weather, sunshine, light winds and a Deadly Dudley in Blue Moon about 2 ft. under a cork was a super combination. Looks like we'll have to wait a while for those light winds to return, but when they do, look out, I'll be back.

Cypress Bend Park has nice cabins and boat launch at very reasonable cost. Look up Sabine River Authority - that's who manages them.

Fished Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning using jigs and shinners without a bite. Asked several people for advice and the response was consistently:'It's a hard lake to fish. There are a few guys who fish for sac au lait here and they know exactly where to go, but they're not talking.' HA HA Anyway, Wednesday evening we got some worms and fished around grass mats near the south landing and caught some nice chinkapin and bluegills. Dinner!

Just got back from there. Launched at the Marina at about 10 AM and went through the Sulphur Mine to the canals on the North side. Wind was pretty bad, so we hoped to find some action in protected areas. A few too-small trout and redfish. Went back out into the mine and drifted around all over, but no keepers. We fished hard until about 4:00 PM and ended the day with no fish, but still had to wash the ice chest - bait shrimp. Fished with clear/red glitter sparkle beetles, matrix shad green hornet and shrimp creole colors, occasionally tipping with bait shrimp. Wish I had a better report for you, but maybe tomorrow is the day. Good luck.

Last two 2 weeks we've done really well there, but I can't lie. Went today and could not find anything. Don't know if it was us or just a bad day. We fished the canals behind the pumping station and all around the lake. No bite. Hope the cool front moving through this week will turn them on again for you. It's got to be better!

A comment titled: Trolling Motor in response to a report titled: New Trolling Motor

I've had nothing but trouble with the Motor Guide Varimax. The head had to be replaced 3 times in two years. The handle would come off when going into reverse and finally broke after the warranty was over so I had a reason to get rid of it and buy a Minn Kota Riptide. Haven't used it yet, but I'm hoping for better luck. Can't comment on other Motor Guide products, but I'd stay away from the Varimax.

I've caught some nice flounder in the little bayou that runs from Elmer's Island Bridge to the beach. Caught 1 and missed 3 last Thursday on Matrix shad green hornet fishing from the bank. Have done well in the past on DD blue moon. The flounders were right in the weeds by the bank.

A comment titled: Hard Sand in response to a report titled: Elmers island

There is usually a well-used path to get to the hard sand at water's edge. Once you get there, you can drive along the beach without any problem. I took a ride over last Sunday, but didnt fish because the water was really muddy looking. Water in front of GI was clear as could be, but I did't catch much there either. Good luck to you!

A comment titled: Report in response to a report titled: chico State Park

Ended up taking a kayak, since I was camping alone. Water at the North Landing was clearer, so I launched there and fished around the cypress trees toward the south where I could get out of the wind a little. Caught a few nice chinkapin and 1 bluegill using worms under a cork.

Never fished out of a kayak before and it was tough in the wind. Not to mention that I haven't mastered getting out of one without embarrassing myself. Maybe an arthritic 67 yr old woman should stick to a regular boat, ha ha.

A comment titled: Bason's in response to a report titled: Beson's launch in Cut Off, LA? New upcoming launch fees?

Haven't heard that, but I sure wish they would use the fees to fill in some of the holes in the launch area. You could really damage your boat or trailer in that area.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've always found every part I've needed for repair and maintenance of my Yamaha at Boats Unlimited. Nice people, too.

A comment titled: Off Color in response to a report titled: Anybody see what happened Sat night in Caminada Pass???

The water along the beach in front of Grand Isle was an ugly murky greenish blue color Saturday afternoon. It stopped at Caminada Pass where the outgoing tide halted it, but I guess when the tide started coming back in, it moved that bad water in.

I always enjoy your reports about bank fishing between Fourchon and Grand Isle. In past reports, you've mentioned using small Zoom Flukes and I'd really like to know how you rig and fish them for trout in that area.
