New To Sportsman Network?

I am looking for advice on the easiest/best route from the Sweetwater marina to the mouth of the MRGO. This would be my first trip to the area. I have a GPS.
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

I just purchased a Humminbird 598ci si HD unit for my boat. This is my first gps unit. I quickly noticed that the built-in navigation charts are very basic. I am interested in obtaining upgraded maps/charts for this unit as well as adding some well known fishing waypoints. The areas I am going to focus on for local fishing are around New Orleans (e.g. Ponchatrain, MRGO, Shell Beach, Buras, Venice, etc.) but am a recent arrival to NOLA (just moved here in August 2012) so I don't have much actual experience. The GPS technology is new to me and I am looking for advice on what software to purchase to upgrade the unit. The Navionics gulf coast package I looked at is expensive and covers a much larger area than I will ever need but I haven't seen much else out there for our area. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I noticed an EDGE waypoint package being offered through LA Sportman; would it be a good buy for someone new to the area.
Thanks Blake

Hi folks. I am a newbie to the NOLA area who loves to fish but my experience is all freshwater. I moved from North Carolina. I sold my bass boat when we moved but then got talked into buying a friend's 18ft center console bay boat so I can do some inshore fishing. I have read a lot of articles, fishing reports, etc. on-line but now it is time to quit reading and do some fishing. My problem is simply where do I start. I would like to begin by concentrating on one area near NOLA and getting some experience before branching out. I would appreciate any advice on where to launch, possible areas to fish, easier/safer areas to navigate for a newbie, etc. I will be taking my two teen boys with me so I have to be safe but being able to put them on a few fish wouldn't hurt my 'dad' status. Thanks in advance for any advice.
