Solo trip to Port Sulphur today. Fished close in wanted to be back for Saints game. First stop off Grand Bayou but water looked dirty. Second stop a big cove near Freeport canal and Grand Bayou. Snuck in looking for reds but trout were back there busting pot belly minnows. Worked the cork for a while and had 10 trout and a few small reds and 1keeper red. 2nd spot in Bay Lanuax shoreline, caught 4 reds on spinner blade w/ green cocahoe in about 20 minutes. Headed to Bayou Maringouin and caught about 10 more trout just drifting with the current. called it a day around 1 and headed back to the house. Great day on the water, went from fog, gnats to rain shower to a nice breeze. Saw one boat all day and burned very little gas.

Get a VHF with DSC capabilities. Read the info and register for a mmsi number through Boat US, it's free. This allows coast guard and other marine vessels with dsc to have your GPS coordinates in case of a life or death situation. Your new VHF should interface with GPS. Once the distress button is pushed your location will actually show up on other vessels GPS screens. You can actually enter other mmsi numbers and locate them on your gps if you are buddy fishing or cruising. Ask Capt Paul on this site also, he is the resident GPS expert.

Just got back from the Sportsman Show in Gonzales and all I can say is that's alot of people paw-paw. I think they outgrew that place, There are not alot of fishing vendors like years past. None of the big names were there. No one was even selling fishing line. Bowie Outfitters had the biggest booth, but nothing to sneeze at. You couldn,t even buy a Mirror lure in that place. Where is CastAway,Okuma,American Rodsmiths,Daiwa,Abu Garcia. No tackle stores from New Orleans and one from Baton Rouge. Is it really a Sportsman show? I went with a pocket full of cash and all I bought was 1 bag of matrix. I cant believe all the tackle companies passed up this show in Louisiana. If anyone has the answer let me know. If you are going to look or buy the latest in fishing tackle don't waste your time, it's not there..If anyone has an answer why no tackle at the Sportsman Show please let us fishermen know. Any comments from Louisiana Sportsman?

Made a trip to Port Sulphur on Friday with my wife. She wanted to fish but not leave too early. No problem and glad to accomadate. Gotta keep the peace, (ha-ha). Easy redfish trip was the answer. Got to the Boat Club around 9am and only a few trucks in the lot. First stop in a cove about 2 minutes from the launch and the water was extra clear but no fish. We moved around to a few ponds I usually fish and found the pattern. The fish were on the shoreline with the oyster shells in clear water. and they were in small groups of 4 and 5 fish. We sightfished all the fish. We put 4 nice fish in the boat and lost 5 more, and caught a few undersized. It was a great trip, I showed my wife how to be stealthful,no radio,no chit chat, put on the Costas and sight fish. She was amazed at what we accomplished and enjoyed being on the boat. I was patient and made sure she put fish in the boat, even though I lost some bruisers. All fish were caught on Hybrid Flurry Advo-glo and lemon drop with 1/4 oz jighead. I got that out the way now its time for a man trip....

Headed solo to Hopedale on Sunday. All by fishing buddies lost their man card so I have to go myself. No worries, safety first. Going thru Stump Lagoon and going to fish Muscle Bay area. If you see me in a 17 ft blue aluminum boat with a 90 ETEC give me a shout.

I need suggestions on deep cycle batteries. Installing a 24v 70lb Minn Kota Riptide this weekend. Batteries will be located in front deck. I have 2 trays up there now. My question is AGM or wet cell, And what brands and size. Optima, Sears or cabelas agm. If I get wet cell it will be group 27 Interstate. I really don't want wet cell in the front. It's hard to check the cells in the front deck. What brands do you use and where do you buy them....Thanks

Since there wont be alot of fishing reports this weekend, I will post some pics of my new sled.Almost done, needs a few handles and cupholders then off to the paint shop. Its 17 ft center console with front and rear deck, plenty of dry storage, 6 in gunnels. It has alot of small details that you cant see, wire runs, plates for pumps and switches, drain channel that goes to bilge. will post more when she comes out the paint shop.

Here are some build pics of my aluminum boat. Console and back deck being put in this week. Then to the paint shop. The builder and I walked around the boat with a sharpie marking where everything would go or not go. Boat is 17 ft long, 80 inch beam and 64 inch floor. 3/16 bottom, .125 sides. Plenty of dry storage, rod holders seat plates and drink holders, 24 gal fuel, no livewell, bottom has slight v towards stern. This design allows the hull to be efficient. It's a tradeoff between shallow draft and a good ride. ETEC 90 on the business end, with all the goodys, gps, amfm, vhf, 24v trollmotor. Boat is being built in Morgan City, should be finished around Labor Day week. Can't wait....

I got a removable tongue for my boat trailer today.Tongue was cut and a sleeve was put in the tube and welded to the tube with a plate added for a snug fit. Then a 5/8' hole was drilled so a locking pin can be put through. Now my trailer will fit in the garage. Work was done by Pearson Trailer in Kenner. Super nice guys,on time and reasonable. Still waiting on boat to finish so I can fish, hopefully Labor Day...

I picked up my new aluminum trailer yesterday in Panama City Fl. Best price and service. Builder was on time and pleasant and great service. 17 ft, aluminum, all stainless and aluminum hardware, slicks on bunks, 14 inch tires with aluminum rims, spare w/hub, hd winch, torsion axle, sealed led lights. Couldn't ask for a better trailer. Same price as Magic Jilt, but waaaay better. Brought the wife down, stayed a couple of days at beach, picked up trailer and drove back to N.O. . Now waiting on Sportsman Fabrication to finish my boat, then rig w/90 etec, jackplate, trollmotor and gps and stereo. Should be ready early September, Tired of fishing on other peoples attached. By the way called two dealers in New orleans area looking for a trailer. They did not want my money, no call back with price, just didn't seem interested and didnt take me serious. Found a link on La Sportsman and they got the job, friendly, answered all my questions. Also got best price on etec in Waveland Ms, Trollmotor online and gps from TX. All prices were better than local shops in New Orleans..alot friendlier too..

My boat from Sportsman Fabrication will be ready in a few weeks. I have been looking for a trailer for a month now. Tried to get a Magic Tilt aluminum price for about a month. Calls, emails, and a personal visit with model number. Not alot of feedback. Finally got a price after I asked them if they wanted my money. In the meantime found Hi Tek Marine from this site and called them up. Gave me a great price the next day, returns calls answers questions, close to Magic Tilts price, but better trailer, its heavier aluminum, mag wheels, GY tires, Spare with hub, torsion axle, led lites, all stainless hardware, etc..but he is in Panama City, Says it will be ready when I am there on Vacation in 2 weeks. Did an internet search and found all positive responses..Any comments or opinions are welcome. What would you guys do?

I am in the market for a custom aluminum boat. 16.5 ft long and xtra wide 60 to 70 inches. If anyone knows a reputable builder please e-mail me. Two big ones in M.C. could not accomodate. Tim's in Violet is doing an estimate and I'm looking for another in S. LA. that will do what I need. Nobody's brud-in-law backyard deal please. I'm ready to rock just sold my boat on this site...

This is a request for the guides. How about a few tips or brief location when you post a report. You know, incoming, falling tide. Upcurrent side of structure, in the vicinity of ...??? You guys have all the knowledge how about sharing some of that info. It gets boring hearing the same story. We are not going to "your spot". Most fishermen know you can't replicate the same bite in the same spot at a different time, Besides most fisherman have more than a few spots to try on an average trip. Kudos to Bob Georgues, that guy gives a detailed report and answers the phone. I am not affiliated with him, he's just talkative. It looks like the staff here is trying to make some good changes to the site. Fresh ideas and reinvention always lead to new thoughts and different views. Just my 2$.......

I built a smoker a few months ago out of a 55 gal drum. Found instructions on the cyber hiway. Google UDS (ugly drum smoker) I built it for less than $100. Best smoked meat I ever had. There are alot of tips on the net about these smokers. If you are handy and want a cheap but good smoker, this is it. Charcoal powered, easy to use. 10 lbs of charcoal will last 8-10 hrs @ 250 degrees. Best but roast, pork and beef ribs, brisket, turkey, and chicken I ever et....The picture shows a propane tank, thats my blow torch to start the coals, picked it up @ Harbor Freight for 15 bucks

Looking for a good place to run 24 crabnets in New Orleans area and catch crabs. Any tips appreciated....

March 15, 2010 at 2:17pm

While fishing has been slow I have been working on the boat and trailer getting ready for some warmer weather. I need some crabbing tips. I have 2 dz nets, last summer I crabbed Bayou B. and dike canal. Did well but with the new dam at Bayou B. I think the dike canal will be well travelled this summer. Does anyone have spots or tips for some good crabbin out of my boat this summer around greater New Orleans area. Water depth, bait, tides, moon, anything that can help me catch some crabs....

Rig your plastic with a weedless screw lok hook or something similar. Maybe use a light color so you can see it from a distance. Also start your retrieve as soon as it hits the water.

A comment titled: Aluminum in response to a report titled: Aluminum Bay Boat - Revisited

For about the same price you can have a custom built aluminum. You can have the extras where you want them and probably a better built boat. Look around there are a few. I had a Sportsman Fabrication built last year. It's solid with plenty storage. Everything but a power pole for the same price as an Express. Look around there are good builders out there.

A comment titled: Ethanol in response to a report titled: Chalmette Refining Petition

Hey guys if you use e0 in your outboard or any other internal combustion engine you shlould sign the petition instead of questioning the man for doing a good thing. Chalmette refinery was the only one producing e0. The farther away the refinery is the more it cost to transport, therefore higher price at the pump. Refineries made billions when the government subsidized them to produce e10. Now the subsidy has expired the do have to pay more to produce e0 but that is not a deal breaker. Ethanol is blended into pure gas after it has been produced. As sportsman we need to stick together on key issues instead of getting off track and bashing each other,

If you like to fish/cruise etc. choose a bayboat that you can run the lake with. Preferably 22-24 ft with highest recommended hp. Choose a dealer and service dept, near you. Get what you like and you will be happy. There are many brands out therer that are good. Don't forget to check out late model used. Good luck and have fun!!

Get some good polarized sun glasses and go along the edge of the grass and look for reds cruising. Soon as you see one throw past him with your favorite plastic, reel in front of him and he should grab your lure. thats how I!
