I'm surprised not more is being made of this. I would think it would cause a pretty good stink.

I went to Elmer's Island for the first time ever in my kayak on Tuesday morning 5/15. I fished from the parking area at Elmer's down to Caminada, back to Elmer's and even a little beyond toward Fourchon. I fished close in and far out and all the space in between...I threw almost everything I had in the box...and all I caught was one lonely 13 inch trout.

Only artificials were used, no live bait was harmed in the making of this trip.

I guess the fish were dining elsewhere that day...or maybe it was just me :) .

'The cold weather theory is simply wishful thinking for those not wanting to admit that salinity reductions will impact trout fishing.'. I think it's just plain denial to say that the record cold temps we had this past winter had NO effect on the trout. Not sure I see a huge change in salinity levels, according to USGS information, around the Grand Isle area so not sure that can explain the bad trout season.

Meh...I think Capt. Mike Triche and Capt. Rory Rorison probably hit it's a combo of many things.

'White out! La. has coldest winter in three decades'. Kinda tells it all...we were repairing pipes in Leeville and then trying to fish waters that were 39 degrees!

The good fishing will return.

The man was down on the water...and told you what he saw...which was nothing. What do you want a video/pictures of? The surf? I'm sure if there were anything substantial to report he would have said so.

Thanks 28-3 for taking the time to post what you saw.

Professional guides should know better than anyone the importance and value of boating/fishing etiquette. Boating/fishing etiquette is a simple set of common sense, common courtesy rules to make everyone's experience more safe and fun.
Unfortunately there are some people who seem to believe, or just don't care, that those basic rules apply to everyone but them.

You are a better person than I am...I would have posted pictures as well as names.

PAC = Pointe Aux Chene .

There is a very nice launch built for kayaks only at the Pointe Aux Chene Marina. It's on the backside of the marina.

Great kayak friendly people there.

Not ugly enough for an oyster toadfish.

I doubt that that explains the lower number of trout caught across the entire Louisiana coast. It's probably caused by the really cold winter we quickly we forget. Hopefully we will see a good bounce back.

We always called that a salt-n-pepper king snake...I guess 'speckled' is the proper name.

A comment titled: Re: Gentlemen's Request: Eloi/MRGO in response to a report titled: Gentlemen's Request: Eloi/MRGO what point, before man intervened, was all the areas we look at as inshore saltwater fisheries NOT a lot more freshwater. I'm not trying to start an argument...just saying...prior to all our meddling (levees, MRGO etc...) fresh water routinely flowed where we now fish for trout...and they still used to catch trout.

The fact that Leeville was once a citrus producing area and the dead tree forest down by Myrtle Grove kind of tells us what was once very much more freshwater/brackish areas.

Might could add a hint as to the location...not exact of course...but maybe a general area before calling this a report.

Hmmm...Most tournaments are based on weight of slot fish. A team scoring based on how many people per team and the five fish per man weight limit would work...making it a slot fish would be the challenge...anything 27 and over would be DQ'd. Without a true manner to cull live fish it gets a little complicated...I guess the challenge would be to pick and choose the 'right' fish with the beer goggles on.

Same for individuals...heaviest slot red gets the top prize...just need a method to tag each individuals fish.

Throwing in a prize for a leopard red with the most spots would add some excitement...often a side bet at tournaments.

You just need a reliable way to measure the length and to weigh the fish.

A comment titled: Re: Beach Access in response to a report titled: Beach Access

It was open when I got there and that was about 30 mins to actual sunrise. I think that is the general rule.

They are doing work on all the small bridges going to Grand Isle...there are temporary redlights where it goes to one lane...might want to allow 10 minutes ore so extra to the time table. The turn to Elmer's is right before the bridge where they are doing work but you can still get back there.

A comment titled: Re: Beach Access in response to a report titled: Beach Access

I just went yesterday. There is beach access at Elmer's Island but bring your's a long drag across the sand to get to the water but it's doable without. Public access at Elmer's will put you a little less than 2 miles from Caminada Pass.

The Fourchon rock barges are another story. Since the road closure to Fourchon beach I'm not sure of any 'legal' easy access to the rock barges via kayak.

For the hunters who have been opposing this:

An amendment was added to HB 391 to allow for prevention of access to an area during migratory fowl hunting season. There was also an amendment to prevent the use of motors that would damage vegetation 'on or above the waters surface'...or at least that's how I remember it was stated. This would help to prevent damage that can be caused by airboats or surface drive motors.

In short...effort has already been made to make HB 391 more agreeable to everyone. These amendments were introduced by the representative who started the bill to begin with.

If anyone digs a canal on 'private' land that connects to tidal waters that are accessible by the public AFTER March 2018 then I think it should be open to the public.

Then again, anyone digging such a canal these days is doing more harm to the marsh by opening it up to even more erosion, they should not be allowed to do it.
