After getting out to the property late on our first stop we started cutting and running. Had a bird start working but we got busted while moving for a better angle. Went to another spot, got out the truck to look for turkey sign!! We went about 75 yards and several birds were gobbling as I was cutting. We ran to the truck to get the gun and 15 min later we had 7 gobblers strutting , fighting and gobbling with in 10 yards. Milked them for 5 min which felt like a hour and finally my 11 year old boy put the smack down on the strutter!! He finale got his first bird with a outstanding head shot at a mean 10 yrds... I sure am a happy lucky dad

I'm still seeing fawns nursing on there mom. From Baton Rouge all the way up to Kentwood.must had been a extremely late drop last year. My two boys are still holding off the slick heads because of the late drop but it kills me that I'm hearing of other people shooting the doe's. I'm very proud of my boys.

We are spending a lot of money on the bear population when they are populating to casual sightings but yet, we have a seriouse problem with the hogs . They are getting way out of hand.. Why don't we put a bounty on the hogs like they did with the nutria. The hogs are pushing a lot of deer out and are multiplying faster than we are killing them !! At this rate, lousiana will be the hogs paridise!

October 29, 2014 at 10:53am

I can't speak for everyone but to me the bears are out of control. I've hunted 3 different properties in lousiana in the past two years that have bears and bear problems!

The bad-
They tear up feeders
They eat all of the feed
They are very intimidating
They do search for humans with there nose
The good-
Wildlife and fisheries are burning money up on these bears. They could be putting money into much more needed areas such as turkey, more agents, hell- give the agents a raise! I just know it's kinda spookie trying to get to your deer stand with a low power light that's aimed at the ground so you don't scare the deer.

Congrats on your first deer man,, awesome buck!!

October 21, 2014 at 3:09pm

I know I'm not the only one that is chasing these nocturnal bucks. (Neighborhood deer )
Shot one last year and my kids have had great opertunity with the crossbow this year but now the deer have been moving at night . Last few weeks they were moving all day with a full moon. Has anyone else had this problem this past week or so?

October 20, 2014 at 1:18pm

My brother and I were having a discussion on best top water bait for fishing redfish!!

I know it generally depends on water clarity and the skies ! Fishing the marsh in lousiana , my go to top water bait is the red/white top dog jr. I have a good bit of experience hunting reds in the shallows out of a godevil boat for about 20 years . My favorite way to fish them is with topping water.

October 15, 2014 at 9:05pm

Not really!! I'm at work and today work seams to be over rated. It's so beautiful outside ! I need to be in the woods. Lol

Looking for a place to make a hunt for second split dove. Would like it to be kinda close to the Baton Rouge area. I don't mind driving a few hours. I love to dove hunt but I don't need to shoot. I just want to get my 2 boys out in the field . We have deer, turkey, fish, fish and more fish, just no where to dove hunt. Any info would be great. Thank you

Years of research I've noticed something , specially since I started using deer cams! Older deer prefer ricebran over corn. It's not only ricebran but I've noticed with some of the other feed also. I'm thinking it's softer, doesn't hurt there mouth as bad. Look at a seers teeth @4.5-5.5 years of age. I bet it hurts to bite down on something that hard!

What do y'all think ?

October 07, 2014 at 7:52am

Where is it you like to get your deer processed ?

I've been using whitetail butcher in independence now for a while and have been very happy with them !

What is your input on where you get your deer processed?

October 06, 2014 at 8:17am

Last year I stayed on the boys to practice with there bows. I expect softball size groups at 20 yards! Had some deer comming in with a gravy 15 yard shot! They simply wouldn't put in the time to learn there anchor point so with the only place that we had to hunt bring behind our home in a neighborhood they didn't get to hunt . I shot one for meat and called it a season!
At the end of season I got a great deal on a crossbow so I bought it for them. They have been shooting it and they are doing amazing with it so I started getting pumped up for this season! Put up pop up blind months ago and started feeding. The camera was looking really good having lots of day time pics through out the entire day. So, day before our Saturday hunt I check the regs!! What is this?? O man,, no doe until after the 15th, it's buck only with a bow!
I tell the kids but they are still stoked because they want to shoot this high 7 pt. it's the only rack that's comming in.
Mourning hunt , the deer should had been in there around 7:30 am but it was so windy with the front that moved in. We didn't see anything!
Evening hunt we get in the blind at 5:00. At 5:45 the high rack came in. I tell my son to be patent and let the deer get comfortable in the rice bran! He bumped the blind with the cross bow and the buck looked up in our direction. My son doesn't stop and keeps lifting the bow. The deer is broad side at 15 yards! He stomps , blows, and leaves! I grunt at him and he comes strait back in, stays behind a palmetto leave for a few minutes that felt like 30 min. Stomps, blows and leaves. Grunted him back in again, I tell him to get ready, the deer is back to the same spot at 15 yards! I tell my son, soot when your comfortable.. The deer played for a few minutes but then soon figured the gig was up and left before my son shot. So close but no cigar. We get out the blind and I see he is shaking. I just smiled and lol! He had a case of buck fever!
As bad as I wanted him to get his first deer I'm very proud of him. He didn't feel comfortable with the shot and passed. He did the right thing . He been brought up right. We will get him this evening!

October 05, 2014 at 10:10am

First set up this morning!! We set up about 80 yrds off the longbirds roost. After the turkeys being approached by a poacher and a coyote with in 30 min our moment was short lived. Upset with the situation I went to another spot where I knew a hot bird was at. We walked in to where I thought we would need to be and yelped--- nothing!! I cutt --- two birds started hammering!!!! I shut up and didn't call until they gobbled.. Even after I called they would respond!! They were coming in on a string. 80 yrds out we here a gun go off. One bird is on the ground flopping while the other took flight out of the fresh cutover.. A person comes running out to retrieve his bird!! Grabs him then runs off with the bird.. I'd love to know where all of these poachers are coming from!! It absolutely amazing that these people have the guts to intercept your bird with your 10 year old son, left with empty hope of getting his first bird.

Has anyone seen if the fish have started working there beds yet in the ponds around Baton Rouge?i went last week but didn't see any beds at all but the water was kinda dirty to tell from the run off from the rain

March 20, 2014 at 9:42pm

Every Turkey hunter has a certain shell... A go to call... A certain way to work his birds!! \r\n\r\nIt\'s turkey season people!! Time to talk turkey!! Or,, we can argue about nwtf, triparish, ducks unlimited, cca, Rocky Mountain elk foundation !.. Lol.

March 18, 2014 at 10:01pm

The morning started with a bad over cast. We stayed in our confidence spot and called in three hens. No gobbling at all. Picked up to see if we could find a hot bird . A hour later we finally found some birds that were more than willing. By cutting and running.. We sat down in a decent area that looked like a good strut zone. We had two swinging beard bird come running in! I told my son to take his time. He had a bead on the bird on the left which had the bigger spurs for at least 3-5 minutes. I didn't ever thank they were ever gonna come out of strut. I'd yelp- they would gobble, I cutting and they would gobble, I'd cluck they would gobble.. After giving 1 cluck that was real sharp they picked there heads up. I say----- shoot son!!!!!!!!he pulls the trigger and I heard---- CLICK!!! Lol,,, he forgot to put one in the chamber!!! He tried to pump a shell in and the birds took off. He got his gun up and I had stopped them at 45 yards but they wouldn't stick around. He could had shot but I'm very proud of him for holding off. He said ever time he got a chance , both birds had there heads lined up in the bead. We are going back after them tomorrow!!!! Good huntin

March 15, 2014 at 2:19pm

Has anyone been scouting? I got officially in my new club at 9:30 this morning. After taking a 2 hr ride through the lease of 5200 ac I finally got to get out the truck and actually scout a little. I looked at a gps while ridding and picked out some good areas to look at. As soon as I got out my truck and walked about 50 yards I heard putting. Hey, not bad for my just getting out of the truck!! But anyway,, I did notice that there were several different tracks new and old from gobblers to hens. Generally after the hens are bread they kinda stay in a tight area to get ready for nest so I imagine with the sign I saw that they haven't started yet. Which is a good thing. It sure would be nice to get both peak breeding seasons this year. I know it was foggy but has anyone been hearing any birds gobbling off the roost and if so how long would they gobble once they flew down? Getting ready to take my two boys for youth hunt

I haven't heard anything at all. But,,,, I bet they killed a few. This is gonna be a great season. The bird my son shot this past weekend was bare below with a few scabs telling me they have been breeding pretty good. It's been a while in the great state of lousiana that I've seen the turkey season fall in place at a perfect time. This will be a banner year!! I've had a lot of excellent reports in the last 3 weeks.

Start him off on a shotgun(410).the shotgun will teach him how to point a gun . When he is ready for a rifle (around 9-10) I'd get him a 7m08 and would use a manage recoil shell. 223 is fun to shoot but not much good in the woods.

That deer will be bigger next year but it doesn't mean he will be there. After 3.5 years of age they get tough. That deer is a trophy and a very respected kill any where you go .I still say I wouldn't have let him walk. I'd loose sleep for a month.

I don't know why I was saying manchac. We are on the same page. Lol.. The area I would be speaking of would be between the interstate and airline by where they cross on gonzales side . You can go to ldwf websight. They show maps that you can download. Also , you will see the signs on side of the road. When in the woods watch for double painted lines around trees. I'm not sure of the color .
Just to explain where Boyce's property is,, comming from Laplace, take the first sorrento exit. You will pass some crawfish ponds that will be on your right. That is the property you will want to stay around.
Hunting this area for deer can be rewarding but can also be very difficult to hunt. It's hard to find the deer runs making the deer to appear as ghost. Avoid the ridges close to the road. I know there are a lot of tracts but the are all done at night. Generally hunting in that area, you look for the islands, ridges and feed trees way off the road. If you can find this and are willing to put in the work,, you will have a high success rate. Just remember, the big problem when you are that far back is getting your deer out of there.

A boat will help you, specially on Joyce. At Joyce it's a must.
You don't need a dog to hunt tree rats. Get some high brass #6 shot. Look for the feed trees and stalk slow and stealth from feed tree to feed tree. I used to enjoy hunting them but I stopped because I don't like eating them. They can be a sporty shoot when they are on the run! Lol, hunting manchac,, I would focus around Boyce property!! Just don't cross his line. He has been growing some very nice deer for a long time. Manchac borders his place!

Manchac is a tough hunt. That swamp is hard to walk in, imagine draging a deer out??
If I were y'all, being new , I'd start with the basics, start with squirrel then maybe some wood ducks.. I think your wife will have more fun with that. After she does that for a while then maybe it will give her more drive to deer hunt. There are a lot of deer in manchac but they are extremely nocturnal . Good luck to ya!!

This time of year I would head to the Leeville area! I would focus on clean water, fishing deep water in main channels in the morning and fishing the flats next to main the main channel's when the water heats up a little. Watch for birds and play the tide. Good luck on your venture. Hope the kids get on some fish

A comment titled: About time someone says something in response to a report titled: Why is LDWF Leaving Money On the Table

Thank you for bringing this up. I'm sick and tired of the bull with our states dwf!!! They waste so much money!! Not on only the bears but on much other things also.

I agree,, raise the prices on Mississippi . They have been sticking it to us for a long time! Let's stick them back but go up again on out of state fishing license. They flipped last time we did but they still don't get the picture. Missisippi can come here to fish at the same price as if they went anywhere else. I've hunted a lot of different states and can tell you for a fact that Mississippi's out of state licence is way higher than anywhere else. Mississippi might be good but they do not hold a candle to Missouri. Maybe if we stoped hunting mississipi , the little towns where we spend our money and the police force that likes to wait on us will aprieciate us more.

Sorry but this struck one of my ling time nerves and I got a little off coarse but I'm glad that someone spoke up.
