New To Sportsman Network?

I'm really getting the fever!! I didn't do much fishing and I haven't been outdoors in a few months.
I'm moving to Utah Oct. 17th so I have about 2 weeks to kill some pigs and after that it is time to go after Mule Deer and Elk!! Can't wail to visit the ol' Pearl RIver and stalk the mighty boars again!! Anyone else going to be out in the Pearl for the opener??

September 27, 2008 at 9:34pm

OK guys, here is my hurricane plan. I am not leaving for this one unless the track turns East and is going to hit New Orleans dead on. I live in Metairie so if it hits anywhere West of Houma I'm sitting tight.
I wanted to get a list of things to get at the ready for staying, here is what I've gotten on my list so far.

Browning A-5 12 GA. with the plug removed and glow sights installed low light shots!!

Remington .270 for those sneaky suckers in the neighbors backyard.

Remington .22 mag for those sneaky suckers in my backyard.

Remington tactical 12 GA. 7 round mag. ( SWAT model) with pistol grip and shell strap.

90 rounds for the .270

150 rounds for the .22 mag

50 000 buck

50 T shot

15 slugs

and if I run out I'll have to grab my bow and send a few down the street with some broad heads in the thighs!!!

After that it is time to grab my Samuri swords and just start wacken' and stacken'

Oh, food and water!!

Good luck

Does anyone know if the marsh off of Paris road across from bayou Bienvenue is private? I wanted to drop my canoe in and go red fishing but didn't want to tresspass.
Thanks

April 23, 2008 at 10:59pm

Made another trip Sunday to the bayou, great weather, FINALLY!! 8 cats, 1 bluegill and a 2.5lb bass. Cats were small almost threw them back but said screw it, I haven't eaten them since last year!! One of them was about 4 lbs and on a 12 foot ultralight with 4 lb test line, that is a blast!! Water was still a little dirty but better.
I was seeing a lot of hits on top, looked like perch but big, maybe sac-a-lait. All they seemed to want was those small baby dragon flies. I threw everything I hade, live worms, and little grasshopper lures and they wouldn't hit. Any suggestions!

April 22, 2008 at 12:58am

Hey guys, I'm going on a night time catfishing trip next week out in bayou gauche and was trying to figure out the tide times.
Any of you know where to find the info??

Thanks

April 17, 2008 at 4:02pm

Made my long awaited first trip of the year to the bayou today. I was the only idiot out there and the water was like mud!! I finally found some clean enough water and caught a little bass and 2 small cats.
The wind picked up again and screwed my day up, water was 65 degs. and I wanted to go fish some deeper structures but I had to stay in the dead end canals just to be able to cast!!

April 17, 2008 at 3:59pm

Hey guys, everything I read about any type of fishing tells me to get a good topo, or contour map to find flats, holes, etc. Where do I get them, every topo I find for places like Des Allemands, Manchac or anywhere in southeast LA doesn't show water depth. Anyone know where I can get a good contour map??
Thanks

I drove out and had a look at the opening of the spillway today. Saw a few guys fishing, they had a school of massive carp in an eddy and they were trying to catch them. I think they thought it was cats.
The guy snagged a little one, I almost fell out laughing when I heard some of the people watching.
One guy was saying "yeah that is a river cat, they aint no good, really salty and nasty". Another guy was saying "yeah it is a little catfish, oh no that is a redfish". The best was the guy who said it was a Jewfish!! I almost blew my coke out of my nose when I heard all this, all these guys were talking to the girl with them trying to show off I guess, pretty funny!!

April 11, 2008 at 9:54pm

Well, it happends everytime. The weekend gets here and a front comes through, I hate this trash!!
I want to go to bayou Des Allemands and catfish this weekend but with the front coming through Friday night I just don't know if I'm wasting my time. Does a cool front stop the catdaddy bite the way it does with bass?

Thanks guys.

April 11, 2008 at 9:44pm

Fished Des Allemands for the first time today. Very pretty area. I went into a few canals off the bayou. Me and my brother only ended up catching a catfish and 2 small bass, we missed a few but it might have been gar.

I am really interested in catching some nice cats, does anyone have any suggestion? I was thinking of fishing the mouths of the canals where it meets the bayous, don't really have a clue though.
Any help would really be appreciated!!
Thanks!

April 06, 2008 at 9:36pm

Ok, this is the craziest thing I've ever had happen to me while hunting. Me and my brother went for a hog hunt today. After a few hours of no action I decided to go cruise an area that I hadn't hunted in a while. We got in the canoe and as I paddled down the ditch I heard something in the weeds. We stopped and waited and heard some steps, but very light, not like a hog. I blew on my hog call and it started walking toward us and my brother said he saw a little movment, so we knew it was a hog for sure. We waited and it sounded like it was moving away and I decided to paddle around and try to get to the other side of the strip of land that we heard him on. Well, as I got to the other side I heard a sniffing sound, not like a hog but more like a deer trying to wind us but not nearly as loud.
By this time I'm thinking this doesn't sound like a hog but I know it is a big animal in there. The area is super thick and I can't see 10 feet. We pull up to the bank and my brother gets onto a blown down tree. He made some noise and I didn't hear the hog, he should have spooked and started snorting or running, I didn't hear anything! Now, I'm getting stumped, I just heard a big animal sniffing not 10 yards away and after making noise he didn't even move. So, I just get out and not even trying to be quite, just trying to make him jump so my brother might get a shot. As I'm climbing up the root ball my brother's eyes get big and he tells me "wait listen". I stop and listen and don't hear anything. Then about 10 yards away just on the other side of the root ball of the blow down I hear it, the unmistakable growl of a cat! I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I asked him what is that and as he answered back "it sounds like growling" It got even louder! I felt the blood rush out of my face and I said man that is a Cougar, I jumped out of that blow down got in the boat and held my gun as my brother got in the boat. As I waited for him that thing was still growling. We got out of that place and I'll never hunt in that area again!! Now, I know you guys might think I was hearing a coon or something but trust me, I've been hunting since I was 6 years old and I've heard coons and all kinda stuff that I didn't know what it was and let me tell you, hearing that hollow rumble of a big cat is the worst feeling I've ever had in the woods!! I never want to hear that sound again!! My brother said he didn't want to turn his back at the same time I did and as he was waiting on me he was getting that sick feeling. Man, and I thought hog hunting was a rush!!

Be careful out there guys, never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that was ever going to happen.

January 12, 2008 at 3:18pm

Well, I checked my camera's for the first time today and one was full because the wind was blowing weeds in front of it. The second one had one picture on it but the lens was fogged up so bad it was just white. Do you guys put fog off or something on the lens?
Thanks!

January 12, 2008 at 2:34pm

Ok guys, I finally got it figured out!! I hunt an area that is very thick and almost unhuntable. Walking is very hard and so noisy you don't have a chance. Hunting from a stand is so hard cause you can only see about 20 feet.
I got it though, I'm going to build a small one man blemp!! I'll have it man powered so I'm legal and I'll just float over the area until I spot the deer or hogs and just shoot him from the blemp!! As for getting him out, just land, tie a rope around his head and lift off!!

What do you guys think?

January 11, 2008 at 7:16pm

Hey guys I just got a game cam, it is a wildview extreme2. I set it up in the yard and got my dog to walk around in front of it and the thing won't take a picture. When I walk in front it takes it but not her. I have tried changing the height and the angle and it still doesn't pick her up. Also, it seems to take a while to snap the picture from the time I step into view. Does anyone have this cam and how does it work?
Thanks guys!!

January 08, 2008 at 8:22pm

Well guys, my hunting season is turning into a total dump!! I got a bow last year and was planning on making a lot of hunts and finally getting a deer. Well, I was so busy with work I shot it only 1 time over the summer and I can't hunt with it cause I know I'll just cripple a deer. So, I then just planned to do a lot of duck and hog hunting. The first split was awsome for ducks but I was busy with work that I could only hunt 2 times!! The second split sucks in my area!! Now I turned my attention to hog hunting and it seems like my spots are just not what they were last year!! I have been scouting and finding tons of sign but now it seems it is to late and the hogs have gone nocturnal!! Since I have not had a good season it is almost like now everytime I go it turns into just total frustration, the wind kicks up and ruins my hunt or it changes direction and messes me up, it just is really driving me nuts!!
Man, I just had to vent cause I've spent the last 3 days hunting and didn't even see a thing!! I know it is called hunting and not killing but man I wouldn't mind doing a little killing while I'm out hunting!!

January 06, 2008 at 8:38pm

What would be a better stand location for hogs. An active tree rub or an area with lots of tracks and trails and what looks like a feeding area?
I am really having trouble getting them hogs this year!!
Thanks!!

January 06, 2008 at 8:26pm

Hey guys, last year I killed a bunch of hogs and this year I got started later in the year and since deer season has started I think the hogs have gotten really wary. I have gone 3 times and not seen or heard a thing. Last year I would hear one every hunt and see one about every other hunt. I did some serious scouting yesterday and found 2 spots that are littered with fresh tracks, I hunted this morning till noon and again, nothing. One of the spots is covered with chewed up cypress balls! It looks just like when a Squirrel eats them but they are all over the ground, I know it is not from squirrels. Will hogs eat cypress balls or is it deer cause I see tracks of both??

January 06, 2008 at 8:20pm

Ok, after reading a lot of studies on steel shot and doing a field test of my own I wanted to ask the question.
How far do you lead a duck crossing over your decoys, say he is flying 30 mph and is about 30 yards away??

Also, what shot size and choke do you guys use.

I started off with #2 now I shoot #6 and am going to try #7. My brother didn't believe me about the #6's until he saw me crushing every bird up to 40 yards. I can't hit anything farther than that anyway so why have a load that can knock them down after a range I can't hit at?

So, I did a little test. I took a target with layers of cardboard and shot different shot sizes into it up to 40 yards, guess what shot sized penetrated the deepest, #6!! I was shocked!! I'm shooting #6 shot with an IC choke.

As for the lead, I usually miss those crossing shots, my best shot is either comming or going, or passing overhead. I aim at the tip of the bill on a crossing shot and I think I'm shooting behind them?

November 23, 2007 at 12:54am

Well, I was pumped about the opener and for good reason!!
Saturday me and my brother shot 12 Greys, Sunday the big ducks got spooky and wanted the middle, so we had to shoot a few teal and spoonies. We got our limit both days and it was not the best of weather either, warm and no wind!!

This weekend it is on, the front was strong and I have my boat rigged for the open water so those big ducks haven't got a chance!!!

I'll bo smokin' tail feathers all weekend!!
Good luck fella's!!

November 23, 2007 at 12:32am

I'll be scouting the pearl WMA Friday evening to make a hunt for the opener. I don't really plan on doing to good but it is great just being out there!!
Just got off the phone with a guy who swears the whole Pearl River monster thing is true!! I'll be thinking about that while walking to my blind!!

Again, what are you talking about, or should I say what is your point? Research the storie I'm posting about and you'll learn of how elusive these cougars are. I just don't understand how some people of the human race can be so stupid. I am a believer in Creation from God, but I have to tell you that your kinda stupidity makes me start to believe in evelution and you are the in between state!!

jefroka, what the heck are you talking about!?

Cullin, I'm moving to Utah which has a good population of them. As for me saying I've been waiting for this, it might not be this picture. But it is just a matter of time and when even more proof is found it just shocks me how people still call it bull. Put it this way, there is way more evidence that they live in LA than a lack of it. Still many people don't just not believe cougars are in LA, they make fun of the people that look at all the evidence and say heck yeah we must have a few. I call these people stuborn idiots!!

I love it. The nay-sayers all keep saying where are the pictures? With all the deer cams we have no pictures. That is only cause every pic that we have they just blow off and say it is not from Louisiana!! I have really been doing my research on these cats, only cause I'm moving to an area that has a very healthy population of them and I want to know how to handle them. I have learned that if they don't want to be seen they won't be seen. They have a case in Colorado where a Cougar is stalking a young girl at a home. The DWF has been trying to kill this cat with dogs, traps, poison and everying else they can think of and still have not even seen it!!! The parents said they have seen the cat looking in the girls window at night at the girl while she sleeps and it has eaten both of the pets!! These things are probably the most elusive animals in the woods, I really don't know how I'm going to be able to hunt with a lot of them in my hunting areas!!! Mike, keep up the great work!!!! Thanks I've been waiting for this!!!

A comment titled: WOW!!!! in response to a report titled: Alligator Attack!

I have always had back and forth arguments on here about hunting stuff, everyone is going to have a different opinion. I have always thought that this site is proly the best outdoor site on the the web and still do. This is a new low for the losers or this site. Mike puts a post on here to let people know of a little 11 year old kid who is in a terrible situation, his family is in an even more painfull situation because they know the true extent of what this injury means. I even heard the kid asked his mom "how and I going to play my video games"?

No, the people of this site don't come together and start talking about keeping this kid in our prayer, or trying to raise money to help ( thanks for those who did just that)!! Instead, we have the select few who have to boost their ego up by knocking others down and then defending themselves to the death!!
Now this post has turned into the all to farmiliar argument like so many other posts on here!!

All I have to say is the dirt bag that started all this will get what is coming to him unless he just comes clean and admits that he was way out of line by posting his first post, and that goes for the other total moron who said gators run away and if not just punch them in the nose!!

I mean really swamp fat, an 11 year old kid punching an 11 ft. gator in the nose, in the words of the great one, "your an idiot, what do you think of that?!?!?!?

You really need to re-thingk what you just posted!! I mean the kid is 11 and he has lost his arm. The family I am sure is on the edge of losing it! And you come on here and talk about how you wouldn't be that dumb?!?!? You post something like this and you say that you wouldn't be that dumb!! The kid is 11 you are an adult who is dumb?? I'm sure if the kid made a mistake by swimming in an area with a gator this is a big lesson learned, we don't need you on here telling him he is dumb!!!!
I hope you sleep well, because anyone who says or even thinks things like you have posted has a LOT of trouble coming down the road!!! Don't ever thing you are smarter or better than others who go through terrible stuggles!! This 11 year old kid is going to have to struggle with this all his life and you took a shot at him, just remember that!!

I hope Devin and his family handle this with grace and just keep on truckin'. Bad things happen to strong people, so I hope they find some good in it, mean while I heard that a cousin is setting up a Capitol One bank account for people to donate to, to help out with the medical bills. Mike, if you could find out how to help out I would love to send a few bucks there way.

A comment titled: Don't really need to risk it. in response to a report titled: Big Water, Little Boat

Depending on what you want to catch, you really don't need to go to big water areas to catch fish. I fish out of a 14' flat with a 15 hp and I would not go in Lake P. I would try Pass Manchac if I had to but would proly spend more time running away from crew boats and bass masters than fishing!! Instead I'd go to either North Pass which is just North of Pass Manchac. Ruddock which is going to put you in the HWY 51 canal South of Pass Manchac and then you have Bedico Creek which is Northeast of Pass Manchac. Also, the Reserve canal off of Airline HWY in Reserve. All of these places hold fish, it is just like any other spot, you have to put in your time and get to know where the fish are.

Trying to fish areas that are to big for your boat is just going to limit the days you can go and will keep you from really learning your spots, just my $.02.
Good Luck!!

I always thought that the dirty water causes anglers to lose confidence and not fish hard and therefore catch less fish, rather than make the fish stop eating?

Anyone who has bowfished knows that it is VERY hard to hit a fish with a bow. I would say if I went with you and had a bocket full of live crabs or shrimp and you had your bow I would have a limit first!

A comment titled: Whunter29 in response to a report titled: Bowfishing for Reds 4-19-2008

I would guess that it is legal to bowfish at night and not legal to shine deer is cause you have a ton more fish than deer and it is not hurting the population.

All I did was make a joke out of a comment that was first posted. After I made that comment a bunch of guys who like to burn people on here about the smallest things started ripping into me and so I had to explain my feelings and that is why I pointed out the negative truths about the area. I didn't just come on here and start bashing the state, I was just defending my position. I'm not going sit here and talk about how much better Utah is than LA, that is pretty female if you ask me!! If you want to find out about Utah and Louisiana Google Utah hunting, fishing, and outdoors. Then do the same about Louisiana and I think you will be in for a serious supprise!! Does that mean it is better, no just depends on what kinda hunting fishing and outdoors you like. I don't care about saltwater fishing, I like freshwater, I like hunting more than anything, all of which Utah has so I'm not really missing anything. My brother on the other hand is a trout fiend and he would be totally screwed up there, so it all depends on what you like.
