New To Sportsman Network?

Ok, what is the name of the WMA that was built for duck hunting near Central LA Alexandria?

Its relatively brand new but I can't remember the name.

Anyone?

Did anyone take over Bob Marshall's weekly fishing report?

https://www.nola.com/outdoors/index.ssf/2011/05/bob_marshalls_weekly_fishing_r_9.html

Long story short.

Installed a new fish finder today. Old one was shot, and now the motor won’t turn over and the trolling motor won’t come on.

What can I check and where can I bring my boat to get looked at?

I’m in Metairie this week.

Long story –

Sorry if this is the wrong spot.

Put in a new fish finder today. Old one was flat broke.

New fish finder powers up. Awesome.

Went to drain the live well, and it will only turn on with toggle switch in the fill position.

Decided to check everything else out. Lights come on, bilge works, and all looking good until I power up the trolling motor. Nada.

On vacation and visiting and can live without trolling motor. Trip planed for the AM, let me see if the motor will turn over. Nada.

Clearly I have done something to the electrical when installing the new fish finder.

It is dark, and trip has been canceled. To say I’m beyond thinking is an under statement.

Where could I have messed up?

Removing the old tranducer was complexity low.

Threading the new cable for the traducer

Pulled cable to the front, minor in complexity, but never yanked on cable. But did have issues getting it run right. Really don’t think I caused any cabling to come loose at this point.

Power – Oh boy! The complexity.

Ok, I removed a red cable from fuse panel to see if that would cut power to the existing fish finder. Nope. Put it back.

Pulled a fuse or two to see if that cut power. That did not kill power.
Was looking to cut power to the older unit, and use that terminal on the fuse panel to power up new unit.

Decided I need to see what was the deal with the power to the original unit. Loosened cover for cables, pulled the wires through and saw where the manufactor connected the power and grown to pre-run wire.
Ok, cut connection and pull prewire back. A little tough to do, but pull hard, not yank, but pull hard and got those two wires to where I needed them. Use same type of connector and connect those wires to new power wires for my new fish finder.
Powered up unit. Awesome it works.
Tightened up every thing, and cleaned up.

It rained today and needed to drain live well. Put batteries in the on position, and flip the toggle to drain. Doesn’t work. Flip it to fill, and you can hear it work.
Crap, better test lights and other key components. Horn works, blidge works, lights, etc. Awesome.
Let me try trolling motor. It does not come on.
Ok, can deal with it later. Let me at least ensure the motor will turn over. It doesn’t. WTF over!
Its dark, been a long day, and I just dragged this boat from Texas to New Orleans to fish some old stomping grounds and I’m dead in the water. Or in this case my MIL drive way.
So, if I can’t figure this out in the day light, where can I bring my boat, to hopefully get this fixed tomorrow?

Was planning on visiting the area and wanted to fish around Hopedale.

I haven't gone since Katrina and was wondering how hard is it to get out to Lake Robin and Black Bay.

Used to launch at Pips and head out through Hopedale Lagoon.

Would appreciate advice on how to get out that way and not tear up the boat.

Hope this doesn't get pulled for talking about another forum. However, I am dissapointed in reading what has happened to Rod-n-reel.com

I visit that site as well as this one to see what is going back home in Louisiana.

I was just curious if anyone had any additional information on what is going on.

Here is the link to what I discovered this afternoon:

Got to go on my first hunt in Louisiana yesterday. We didn't get many birds, but had a good time anyway.

My cousin's husband took me and said its been slow for some time. Just not seeing big ducks and the teal seemed to have moved on. At lease the large numbers that they had been seeing.

How is everyone else doing in this area?

December 25, 2010 at 10:31am

How do you post a picture with your thread?

November 02, 2010 at 12:45pm

Had a great morning!

The birds were increadable. We must have had more birds then I could count come in just befor legal.

Once LST came, it was fast and quick on the shooting. The fun ended once the sun came out in full strength.

We were hunting out of ground blinds and the birds kept flaring, but we couldn't figure out what it was. We re-did the spread, rebrushed the blinds, but no luck.

It is going to be a great season, if today was any indication.

Ok, my youngest has been asking me to take her deer hunting, so we're headed for Gramma's house in Area 3. My Uncle, who has a couple of stands set up, wasn't able to answer my question on weather it is either sex or buck only.

The land is private and the season does not end until Jan 2010, so can we take a doe if the opportunity presents itself?

My apologies for my ignorance, but I've always hunted on land that was apart of the DMAP program, so I've had doe tags. And if I hunted a WMA it clearly lists what is open.

I was looking for a guide recommendation for New Orleans area. I grew up here, but didn't discover duck hunting until I moved.

Any suggestions would help?

Looking at the guide section, it seems only one person close by is Homa, but I wanted to visit Hopedale, Delcroix, Shell Beach area.

Thanks for the replies and offer to help everyone.

One of the wire came disconnected from the starter. Motor will turn over.

Trolling motor was similar issue. The positive lead came out from the plug. Reconnected and back in business.

I'll let you know how I do this week.

Here is TPWD's WMA map - https://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/hunt/public/lands/maps/

When I looked up Shelby TX it is closer to Houston area. Is there another town you're going to?

A comment titled: Current Call in response to a report titled: Duck Calls

What call do you have now?

Double reeds do seem to work a little easier. I just got a Buck Gardner Tall Timber, and I'll say for a single reed call, its easy to work. I got it because it claimed it was as easy as a double reed call. Also because it claims to be a loud open water call, which confuses me since its call Tall Timber.

Anyway, why no just work on the call you have?

A comment titled: location in response to a report titled: Broke skag

You might want to help others out and let folks know the location of the pipes.

Do you have latitude and longitude?

If you zoom in on Google maps and click the spot it happened, Google maps will give you the latlongs.

Sorry about your motor. What does something like that cost to repair?

A comment titled: Fishing and Duck Guides in response to a report titled: Lost Dog - Help Needed!

You may want to call some of the fishing guides and ask them to keep an eye out. Most of them have radios on their boats, hopefully they will send a hail call out. Hope you find your dog.

A comment titled: Ethanol Production in response to a report titled: DU Projects in LA

I found this on another forum, and have always wondered if anyone might have migration numbers that could be compared year for year.

I'd bet they have an inverse relationship. As ethanol production increased, I'd bet the migration numbers to deep south decreased. I just know know where you can pull the data to do the duck migration estimates.

' Blame it on the ethanol that the Government makes us use. These aren't hard facts because I didn't do any research. It's just the way I kind of remember it. So someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Duck hunting was excellent just about any where in South La back in 2000 and it seems to get worse every year. Corn/ethanol has become a big business and has made a lot of people rich. They are farming corn just about everywhere now. below is a chart of ethanol production for the last five years. It seems to me that as the ethanol production goes up, the ducks in the south decline. So the only reason ethanol production to go up is to grow more corn.

Annual Fuel Ethanol Production in millions of gallons
World rank Country/Region
1 United States

2011 13,900 million gal.
2010 13,231 million gal.
2009 10,938 million gal.
2008 9,235 million gal.
2007 6,485 million gal.

This my friends is the reason the ducks don't winter in La any more. So I blame it on the government for the ethanol.'

A comment titled: Abuse in response to a report titled: BEWARE Louisiana Hunters (Non-Residents) hunting in Mississippi

Deerhunter-0817,

It really sounds like these folks acted unprofessional.

While I can respect your decision, I'll ask you to step up and take action.

Contact your US Congressman. Their office can get involved, and have someone looking at these two Agents.

The bottom line is these guys are in a public trust, and need to be professional at all times.

You may not be a big fan of it, but have you considered using an e-collar?

A comment titled: Decature TX in response to a report titled: Front.

Buddy of mine is hunting near Dallas, TX in Decature. Said the ducks are thick from the front that moved in a few days ago. Dallas is in the Central flyway, but some of those birds make it to Southwest LA in the MS flyway.
