Jeremy got his Bufflehead and Wood duck back today to add to his Gadwall. He now has more ducks on the wall than Dad! Must be nice! He is awfully proud of these! Take a kid Hunting and/or Fishing soon!
My son is getting in fishing shape! Hunting is now over and he's ready to do some fishing!
Does anyone have a hog trap for sale in the Slidell area? If so, give me your contact info.
OK. This is getting old! I thought the pigs were gone from my backyard. Haven't seen any for 2 weeks. I throw out some birdfeed this morning and about 2pm I look out the back door and there are 4 more piglets and a sow! I grab the 22, shoot a piglet and it goes down. Broken spine. They all run off, the sow comes back after realizing this little one is screaming. I put one between the eyes, she drops like a rock! I try and bolt another round in the gun and the 22 casing is stuck! I pry it out with the tip of a knife, while I'm chambering another one in she gets up, staggers and takes off in the brush, crashing into stuff! I get by boots and long pants on (I'm in shorts at the time)and can't find her. I know where they go so I headed off to check and sure enough, she sloshed through just before I got there! These things must be everywhere around here?
My son wanted to try and get a male woodie this morning so when I saw how low the water was going to be yesterday evening I said "That works for me"! Got him up at 5:30am, got dressed and let him walk out to the swamp by himself and sit on the edge of the swamp to see if he could get lucky. 10 minutes after daybreak (6:35am) success! He bagged his first male woodie! Now I have to get 2 birds mounted for him. A bufflehead and now the woodie. I sure was proud. I helped him carry the pirougue to the water and then he did the rest. All in all a great morning! May try one or two more times before the season is over. Anyone do good on the Pearl this morning?
2 quick Grays from the PRWMA. Scouting helps out but still not many ducks down. Slowest year ever since 1985 in my opinion?
Hey guys,
I have a hog problem in my backyard and don't want to pull out the heavy artillary. Will a 22. long rifle Remmington Yellow Jacket hollow point take down a 200lb hog with a head shot? Don't laugh, I'm serious! Also, where is the best place to hit the hog? In the ear, the eye, the heart, etc.? I just want some input as I have never tried this before. If I have to take it out with the 12 guage then so be it but it would be nice to just use the 22 to keep down on the noise. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
Walked the marsh and drug a 2 man pirougue. The guide type with transom on back for small motor. Was out of breath and out of shape for this type of hunt but it was worth it. 4 Grays. The whole excursion took about an hour. Teaching my 10 year old son how to be safe and still knock a few down is priceless! Brother in law came to rescue and helped drag the rougue back to road as he wanted to see the ducks for himself! Didin't have time to bring the big boat and we may have not done as well with it? Blessings to all and Happy New Year.
Where are all the Buffleheads coming from? I haven't seen this many of them in my life! They are all over the East Pearl River. My son shot a nice male today and I will get it mounted for his birthday. Beautifull bird but they are so plentifull it is just something to see. I wonder if they had a bumper crop this past spring or is it the weather up north? Good luck to all this weekend.
Anybody?
These baits work as do any other baits when the fish are feeding. I will say that you can catch croakers and drum on the bottom with them where you generally won't be able to do this with an ordinary plastic. I was on the reds one day and they were absolutly devouring the small crab gulps! I've done better with reds than trout with these baits. DOA shrimp works better for me than the gulp shrimp on trout. Just my 2 cents.
I have openings in West Point La Hach for next year. This is a tidal marsh in brackish water. Plenty of redfish and trout also. Duck is hit or miss. This year wasn't so good because of Gustov and Ike back to back. Last year was outstanding. Mainly gray ducks, green wing teal and mottled ducks. Good luck. The launch is about a 45 minute drive from the Superdome.
My son killed this ringneck in Slidell. It was in a land locked freshwater pond. It was tough as hell getting the skin off the breast! Meat was delicious though. Well worth it. The only place I have seen or shot a lot of ringnecks is in Venice. We shot a bunch about 6 years ago in a huge pond behing the camp we were staying at and we gave em all to an old man that was staying with us. We all thought that they tasted like dogris. The jig is up now. I will activley pursue these ducks for the table!
I don't know about eating a Bufflehead but my son shot a female Ringneck and I reluctantly fixed it for him with some pool doo he shot. When I sliced the breast of the ringneck and tasted it I was shocked! It was absolutely delicious! We had to fight over it! I will definately scout areas for ringnecks next year! Good eats!
That's some awsome fish guys! I can see you have mastered this big trout thing! Way to go! I don't guess you had too much competition on the water yesterday? That wind was howling! I was thinking "where was this wind during duck season"? Fishing was the last thing I would have considered doing!
Thanks for the info guys. The hogs 250 lb mom and 4 35 lb little ones. My friend in Poplarville let me use his trap. Worked like a charm. For now my backyard is hog free!
Browning Gold I bought in 2002. Never had one problem with it. It endured saltwater in my gun safe for 5 days during Katrina. The spring in the tube rusted out. That's the only thing I had to do besides take it apart and spray it down with gun oil. Still not "ONE" spot of rust on it. Never jammed one time. Ever. Reaches out and touches the ducks from far out! Light and doesn't kick much at all.
My son has an escort 20 guage youth model auto. Bought in 2006. It jammed a few times when it was brand new but once he shot about a box of shells through it it has not jammed since. It's a great, inexpensive gun for a young hunter. It's a 3 inch and it knokcs down the ducks when they come in range. Good luck.
Thanks for all the good words guys!
Worse than last year by far! As far as number of ducks on my lease in West Point La Hache. Maybe Gustov and Ike's high water ruined any possibility of feed?
J.J. = 45
Son = 10
I hunt in the west point la hache area and this is the worst since 1985 when we had 3 ducks and 30 days! Back then it was better for me because you didn't even need a lease. Everything was wide open because there were no hunters. Then it got a little better each year and before you knew it, the ducks were back and the leases were full again. With this economy going south as well as the duck hunting, I'm afraid we will be destined for public land unless you are super rich? Even the season of Katrina I did better than this year. I have no answers? Good luck and watch out for low water this weekend!
I added about a half quart of oil the night before I took it out and had the problem. I'm thinking I need to drain a little oil? I know it's full to a little over full.
I'm in favor for it. That would be a great category!
Looks like a great hunt Randy! I'm glad to see you had success! That's one bird they won't be able to track any longer? My son got a kick out of that red tag on his neck! Tell Mr. Roy hello. It was a good surprise to see you guys on here.
Bubby
The lighting is not good enough to be 100% But I am 100% sure that it is either a Corn Snake or a Rat Snake. If I had to bet I would lean towards a Rat Snake. Both are totally harmless to humans (although the Rat Snake is quite fiesty and will bite you quick!)and great mice and rat eaters! Too bad he won't get to eat another one!
Swampmeister,
That's a beautifull sight with youre son getting those dekes. It looks like another generation is hooked! Keep it up. I know both of you will never forget those hunting days!
I have the same problem. Happened this past Friday after sitting up for about a month. Runs great at half throttle but when you put it under a load it sputters and kills. Motor is 7 years old and I have had no problems with it up until now. I will check the fuel filter and drain the carb in case I have water. If that doesn't work I will rebuild the carb. My muffler was glowing red also? I Never noticed this before but I may have noticed it because I was looking back at the motor so much I couldn't help but to see it?
I could get the use of a bow but I don't want to have to run after it too far off. I live in a subdivision and if I don't drop it on the spot it won't be worth it as I would have to go into other neighbors' back yards! Thanks for the idea. I have never hunted with a bow. If it will drop it I would be willing to try it.
Go try Lake Road along Bayou Lacombe!
