I find it strange the reports that there are no fish. I fish all over Louisiana but so far this year I haven't had to leave my local area. All of these fish where caught east of the Atchafalaya river on artificial bait. There is no live bait available where I live. I do catch live bait myself some times but seldom need it.
Well our opening weekend was not what I had hoped for. The lack of Hurricanes and the high duck number forecast had me very hopeful. My lease is south of Bayou Black off of Bayou Penchant and Turtle Bayou and we are LOADED with feed. Three blinds killed ZERO ducks Saturday and Sunday. We did see a few Summer Mallards but none would come in. I decided to let my kids hammer down on the Gallinue Sunday. They don't care what they are shooting as long as they get to pull the trigger. Honestly, I had a great time and really did enjoy watching them shoot Gallinue. My 9 year old Grayson killed 13 and his brother Hunter 11 killed 9. They made a great Gumbo last night. Hopefully we will get some cold weather and birds soon. Be safe and share the Outdoors with a kid.
Is the beach open again? I have not been down there in a long time and I remember there was a lot of controversy over the beach and acess. I have to go to a swim meet this weekend with the kids in Larose and am thinking about taking the RV down to the beach afterwards and doing some fishing. I tried to get a camping spot at Grand Isle but of course they are filled up. Does anyone know of any other campgrounds that are back open after the storms down that way? We used to go down there often but have not been down in about 5 years. Thanks
Here are a few pics of my bobcat mount. I paid $480.00 to have it mounted. Honestly, I'm not totally satisfied with it but it is not a bad mount. After seeing Swampy's I feel much better about mine and what I paid! LOL I understand it is very difficult to mount a cat right. I've only seen a few that were done right.
Made a hunt at the lease with my son this weekend. After the holiday's I had to get a way to the camp! We had a great hunt and from the sound there were lots of other hunters doing well also. No big ducks but I love to eat teal and won't complain. The season is getting better for us. It started slow. After this weekend I think we've killed a total of about 132 ducks this season.
Anybody know anything about the big buck killed this week in Bayou Louis?
Hey guy's I'm kind of new to duck hunting. Since I've started I've had to learn everything on my own. It's been kind of tough but fun. The last few years we have just gotten better but still trying to get even better. This year my kids want to start hunting ducks so I have to kick it up a notch. I mostly hunt at the Atchafalya Delta that is where I park my camp. Although we might make a few trips during the week to the Wax this year. Anyhow, here are my question. How do you guy's set coots in your spread? And how do you put your deaks out? I have 3 dozen GHG mallards and 2 dozen mallards flambeau trash. 1 dozen GHG GW teal. 1 dozen GHG pintail. 1 dozen GHG gadwall and 1 dozen coots. With about 6 feeding mallards and a few resting mallards. I know that that is a lot of mallards and I don't put them all out just what I will need for a certain area. I usually put out as many as I can for the area though. I understand that the mallard is a duck that all other ducks associate with and is one of the most vocal ducks. That is why I have so many. What do you usually put out and how or do you incorporate the coots to your spread? I usually try to hunt ponds or "Coves" in the marsh I will put my deaks around the edges leaving the area in front of the blind open. What we did last year with the coots is put them in a group off to the side of the blind by themselves. Kind of like a confidence decoy. Also how do you guys feel about confidence decoys? What do you use and why? I'm thinking of hunting the bay more this year also. Should I get a few goose decoys? How should I put out my spread in the bay? I don't want the ducks landing outside my spread. Should I put out large spreads in the bay? I know that is a lot of questions and any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Son "Bryan" and Nephew "Alex" both got their fist deer at the Delta youth hunt last weekend. I think we've got a few more lifelong hunters in our ranks!
Well guy's we made a trip this morning. My wife and the kids wanted to go too. So we went to Grassy lake and Lake Palore so that they could fish too. We did ok. I got 7 gar with my bow and the kids caught 4 with their fishing poles a few bream my son Hunter caught a 4' alligator on this pole he enjoyed that. I broke the hook off next to the boat.. The water was running about 90 degrees. Talk about hot. The water was pretty green and the gar were all small. I didn't see any big ones. Well have fun next weekend guy's with the Gar Rodeo. Wish I could go.....
This Buck was killed last year with a muzzle loader by my Ex Father in Law, Allen. This is the best buck that he has ever taken. It is really a beautiful buck. He would like to have it scored. He has been hunting his whole life and always dreamed of a buck like this. I'm glad he was finally able to take this one. He has killed more deer in his life than anyone else that I've ever know and he still loves it. I only hope that I can enjoy deer hunting when I'm his age as he still does. I also have another friend who would like to have his deer scored. If there is anyone out there who can do this or point us in the right direction please E-mail me I live in Berwick and Allen lives in Pierre Part. The other deer that we would like to have scored are in Berwick. They are all Archery bucks that were taken on Public land. I'm sure that at least two of them will make the state records. Thanks
I thought that the 2nd picture might have been a little 'much'. I'll Repost the first one. I hope that it is acceptable to the 'Post Police'. Just teasing Mike.
Is this one of those Deer Dog's that everyone is arguing about?
This is what you need to do with the Gar on Verret. Sick em and Stack em.
Caught while fishing a spinner bait around cypress trees. Is this one to small? Should I have thrown it back?
Here are a few more pictures of my buck. My friend fireman took them. He really did a good job. I will only take my first buck with a bow once and he did an awesome job of capturing it for me. Thank you Paul for helping to preserve the moment.
Here is a picture of my first Buck with a bow. I was hunting below Patterson in the Marsh. I've always heard that there are no big deer in the marsh. Well, here is one. I was only about 10 miles away from the Atchafalya Delta WMA. I was into bow hunting before I took this deer. Now I'm addicted. I can't wait for next year.
Flatboat Capt thank you for bringing the kids and the report. I love to see kids getting out and enjoying experiencing the outdoors like I did. Your a great uncle and they will remember that day for the rest of their lives. Good on you sir.
Well said Capt. I am very dissapointed in the main Conservation Group out there and very concerned about what their agenda is? I've been an active member for many years and although I always had concerns from what I saw inside I continued to support them as there was no other game in town. I cannot and will not support them any longer. How can decisions like this be driven by the media? Should decisions like this not be made from scientific data? No where have I read or heard of the state bioligists saying there where any issues with the population of or fish. If anything I hope this current situation will additionally highlight the need for HABITAT restoration! Fishing reefs are nice but do little to protect and repair what we are loosing every day.
+1 on eman. You do realise you can only keep 15 trout from that area right? If you fish farther east you can keep 25 per person.
Few more pics
All of these fish where caught in the first part of June.
That fish would put you at the top of the leader board on the CCA STAR tournament in the Ladies division.
That is a great fish and story. Nothing better than fishing with the family.
Guy's our marshes and estuaries the nurseries for the fisheries. Without them a critical part in the replenishment of the fish stocks is lost. We need to do everything possible to ensure we recover as much of our lost habitat as possible and retain what we have. The organizations spending money and time ''studying'' the problem are just delaying the solutions that we all know are needed! It should be illegal in the state of Louisiana for any material that is suitable for reef creation to go into a land fill. We need to utilise every opportunity to build reefs and protect and rebuild our coast. Every time a channel is dredged the spoil should be utilised in a manner to help restore the coast. Regardless of any additional cost incurred. Fresh water diversions should be used as affectively as possible to best utilise the silt carried by our rivers. The Atchafalaya Delta area is a good example of the possibilities of the proper use of dredging spoil and coastal growth. I am only in my 40âs and Iâve seen first hand the losses we suffer due to coastal erosion. I fear if we donât do something to halt and reverse quickly we will not be able to stop it.
Excellent report as usual Bob. Looks like Kent hasn't finished getting the motor back in that boat yet huh. LOL
The problem is there is no money in furs. My son trapped this year and was only getting $20 for prime otter!? Why bother? You will likely have to hire a nucience trapper to handle the problem.
That area is all private. You missed the application deadline for LDWLF mooring permits for this year. Contact the New Iberia office to be put on the mailing list for next year.
I've ridden ll over both and have not seen a single teal yet.
Nice post. Capt Bob is the man and Kent is a character for sure. Glad you had a good time and caught fish.
Good post. Thanks for the report. Looking forward to heading down myself in a few weeks when I get home from work. Your helping to build the anticipation.
I'll be there Memorial day weekend. Parking my camper at Boudreuxs. I've been going down there all my life. Been friends with Kent since we were kids. Was talking to him this week about his Grand Dad. Couldn't imagine a better place to fish out of or better people. If y'all are down there make sure you see Terry for your bait. He'll take care of you and point you in the right direction.
Nice fish. Sounds like a good trip. What area where you fishing? Where did you put in?
Scott's boat is real nice and would be a great deal for someone.
I don't think she needs a hunting liscense to hunt at a game preserve. These are not wild birds they are put and take.
9 pointer from last years youth hunt.
