My partner drew a marsh blind at White Lake for today. Ducks and Specks galore, all over the place. Came home with 2 specks, 6 grays, 4 teal, and 1 widgeon. Knocked down but could not find 3 more specks. All blinds scored today, mostly with specks, mallards, and teal.

For those who claim the ducks are not down, they may not be where you hunt but they sure were where we hunted. The old saying that the sky was black with ducks was seen more than once today and the specks were very, very plentifull

I think that Bob Marshall became the outdoors writer for the Times Picayune after HEK left and I believe he may be at NOLA.com or the Advocate or one of them local papers. He may be able too give you a line. I remember reading HEK's book but couldn't tell you the name to save my life!

Did your friend say if the officer was a civil, state, or federal authority? Like St Tammany, Fountainbleau, or Big Branch?

I have not been there in a few years but my wife and I love Cane. It is a beautiful little spot. The last time we were there it seemed as though some commercial kayak rental place had taken it over. A multitiered trailer was in the parking lot and yakers were all up and down the bayou. That would at least make sense for a $/head type price but it is a rather primitive launch. Make some improvements and then charge.

+1 What Swamp Lizard said! Just like him, I did not ask for Agent Orange either. Once you get stuff you have to live with it. But then Lizard, like the General says 'you can't fix stupid!' and I think it is pretty much endemic in Louisiana. Ogre

Nothing for or against in the Governor's 'Stay at Home Order' issued today to start at 5pm Monday. https://gov.louisiana.gov/index.cfm/page/93 I thought about it but decided that the intent of the order should be obeyed. Ogre

We were disappointed in this Sportsman Show. We thought there would be more waterfowl hunting offers. Not looking for boats, tractors, God forbid in the summer seeing another lawn mower! Talked to some nice vendors, and Wildlife and Fisheries was informative but what we were looking for was not worth the price of parking and admission. Guess we are spoiled by the Gonzales spring show. We will limit our patronage to that one as it seems to get bigger and better each year. Ogre

Thanks for the report. I always wondered how the youth hunt went but never had a kid to take. I will pass it on to my friends.

Also, the info on the Mojo was about what I figured. Same with geese and ducks. I got some of those thingamajigs or whatever they are called. Want to try them.

Nothing better than a you and your dog.

In addition to a book, I would suggest joining or at least going to a hunting retriever club day. There is normally years of experience there, other people (along with you taking your turn) can throw dummies for your dog and you can handle him, and you can get some experience that you just cannot get out of a book.

Dog people are good people and most remember when they started and are not uppity, well, there are always exceptions but for the most part you will be helped.
I am not too familiar with where the groups are now, been out of it for some years but there used to be groups in Houma, Baton Rouge, Bonnet Carre spillway and quite a few other places. Go to United Kennel Club or AKC and look up hunting retriever clubs.

Just go check them out, it will be worth it and it will make for a better partnership with your buddy.

Chuck

If you have a doubt, leave the dog home. Check it out and see for yourself how it looks. Better to have a dog at home than see him be lost and not be able to do anything about it. Bad feeling, I know.
