Big Bass Rodeo and Fishtival
Okay folks, two weeks from tomorrow marks the return of the 61st annual Big Bass Rodeo. We are planning a big event with lots of activities for all. This year we are adding a new bonus called "Red Tag Special". Check it out at www.neworleanscitypark.com/fishrodeo.html. Anyone registered in the rodeo may catch a tagged redfish in Bayou St. John on rodeo day (see rules) and win $100 cash plus a rod and reel. In addition we will be adding some big bass in the lagoons for the rodeo. I personally know that bass weighting 8, 7 and 6 pounds will be in the lagoons by rodeo day. We do want to remind everyone that the park is really closed to fishing until rodeo day on March 29th but if you do "test" the waters, please practice catch and release. Feel free to contact me for questions regarding the rodeo. Come on out!!
City Park Fishing Rodeo website is now updated for information on rodeo and fishtival.
City Park Big Bass Rodeo and Fishtival is Back!
City Parks Big Bass Fishing Rodeo, a traditional New Orleans event, is believed to be the oldest freshwater fishing rodeo in the country and will return on March 29th, 2008. We have a huge event planned to celebrate our return after a 2 year absence due to Katrinas devastating impact. Shorelines have been cleared, water quality improved and lagoons stocked with bream, catfish and bass. The rodeo includes fishing categories for bass and bream, a team event for Rio Grande Cichlids (non-native fish), a bonus for the younger anglers called Catfish Kids and a tagged fish bonus for cash award. Registration begins at 5:00 a.m. and ends at 8:00 a.m. at the Casino Building, with weigh-in by the Bandstand at 11:00 a.m. Entry fees are $10 for adults and $5 for kids (12 and under). Entry fee includes a free raffle ticket for fishing tackle giveaways. <br>If you dont fish, be sure to join us for the Fishtival which is going to be expanded to include more activities for children and educational exhibits for everyone. For the children ages 6-12 years old, there will be a casting contest with winners announced at the Awards Ceremony. There will also be demonstrations on how to fly fish, and throw a cast net with an opportunity to try each. And, of course, the annual Mardi Gras toss of fishing lures. All ages will enjoy our greatly expanded educational area with exhibits from over 20 wildlife, conservation & related organizations. Also present will be artist Glinda Schafer with her beautiful marsh prints, Bill Dazets unique wooden fish carving and Bowen Jewelers fishing, nautical and N.O. jewelry. Have you ever wanted to be a TV fishing star? Now's your chance to win a charter fishing trip for two with Reel Excitement Charters & televised by Don Dubuc (Outdoors with Don Dubuc) or fish with Capt. Dudley, creator of the Deadly Dudley lure. Lots of fishing tackle will be raffled off and there will be a silent auction with special items such as a signed Hornets game ball, NBA chair, Saints football signed by Devery Henderson, handheld GPS, framed art print by Glinda Schafer, fish sculpture by Bill Dazet, antique fishing lures and more. Fishtival hours are 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. complete with food and music. <br>Take a kid fishing! This is a great opportunity to introduce children to fishing in a fun-filled and educational environment. We welcome childrens groups to fish in the team event-rio grande roundup (or any category). So bring the kids and enjoy a great day in a great park!<br>

Fishing gear for St. Bernard kids!!!Today I delivered to Cookie Mundt (at what was Chalmette High School but now United) 121 rod and reel combo's with 3 boxes of plastics baits, etc. This tackle is to be given to the kids down in St. Bernard who as we know lost everything. What a way to start the spring (almost) with fishing gear to haunt the marshes in St. Bernard and take their minds off Katrina as they reel in tons of trout and redfish.
Special thanks to all the folks who donate tackle to my rodnreelgal program. There is one individual who prefers to remain anonymous that deserves great credit for keeping me with rods, reels, and tackle. To this wonderful person whom I shall refer to as "My Guardian Angel"-thank you for your continous support. Words cannot thank you enough. Your generosity will never be forgotten!
Now let's all go out there this spring and have a wonderful time fishing. Introduce kids--yours, your friends, or just a neighbor to the wonderful sport of Fishing!
