Where do you guys launch to get to Lake Lery? I used to use EBI but hadn't been in a long time and unsure if its still open...
Delacroix is a good bit futher of a drive so was wondering what the options are?
Thx
I'm looking for the pirogue builder in Kramer La, in the Raceland area. I need a round bottom fiberglass pirogue and he is the only one i have heard of that makes them. If anyone can point me in the direction i would really appreciate it....
Well for those of you that may remebember late last season i had been hunting a buck deep in the swamp, trees in the area were all gouged up... Shot a nice 8 pt but didnt think it was the one...Well i think i may have gotten him and i am happy as can be!!! At about 11am i was debating how much longer i was gonna sit and stood up to stretch and saw the movement. Sat down and went for the gun and it got all tangled on the holder and he is coming down his rub line. Sort of worked out cause all the commotion kept me from looking at the rack.....Finally got the scope on him and settled down and took the shot with the 270. He spun and turned into the thickness and disappeared. Started thinking maybe he moved and I hit to far back.. After a long ten minutes of getting down the tree, i trudged over there and he was only 10' away! Got him right through the heart!
Then the fun part, the half mile drag through the swamp. MISERABLE.... It was worth it though... My biggest buck to date, a 10pt, weighing in at 170 lbs, a 12 pt if you score it by the ring method!!!!.... My best yet!!!
What a Chrsitmas present!!!!!
Put the smackdown on this big doe last week in Maurepaus Swamp. Cold front just came through and she popped up behind me at 5pm. woulda a had to stand up and turn around in the climber so i took the shot left handed and it worked out. she never moved. Gotta love the swamp!!!
Made it out Saturday and tore the bass up in the dupont marsh.. could see that front line approaching and they started knocking the buzz baits out the water... brought pops and he had a blast, hadn't caught bass in 30 years.. big one went 5lbs and had dropped her eggs and was totally empty...also caught some token reds...just like a switch though they shut off after the front passed and wanted to then go chase the reds but ran up on a flat and overheated the engine, by the time it cooled it was late..
special thanks to Capt Merdoc and EJ Plaisance for the tips, you'll get my business in the future just for the little pointers, Thanks!!
Any bass pro's have any thoughts on the bass fishing activity the day of the full moon?? Never paid much attention until this year but i am not sure yet?
Here's a couple more hawgs from last few weeks, last couple trips been slow but these made up for it.. Caught on Watermelon Red Brush Hogs
Anybody hear any crawfish reports from Bonnet Carre... just interested if a few can be caught...
If not how bout Honey Island, never crawfished there before but am willing... just looking to catch a sack this weekend
Caught these Thurs and Fri last week... Thurs caught 9 and 5 were over 4 lbs with one tipping 5... Friday went and caught 7 with 2 over 4lbs.... Caught em out the diversion area of Lake Cat... It was a blast and finally got my mindset out of hunting and into fishing...
Anybody ever try putting a go-devil on a flat back pirogue. I have a little 5hp go devil and am going to try putting it on a flatback pirogue or canoe... Pirogue may be too unstable so it may require a canoe which i am pretty sure will work. Anybody ever try this??
I am not sure i get or agree with our deer seasons... So you have always had a muzzle loader season that gave a few extra weeks for its slight disadvantage... Then the much further extended bow season, this totally makes sense, its much harder to get that much closer to a deer and be absolutely quiet while u set for that perfect shot....
Now i have nothing against crossbow hunting but why in the world does it get the same season as bow hunting... it is not the same... I would argue its more similar to hunting with a shotgun, atleast from the stand.... I mean you have to be a bit more accurate but the technique is the same, range is similar... What i am saying is the cross bow hunter doesn't face the same challenges as the bow hunter, why is the season the same.... Basically every gun hunter can now buy a crossbow and with very little practice, nothing compared to that of a bow hunter, can now enjoy the same extended season as the bow hunter, essentially taking away the benefit the bow hunter DID enjoy... Basically in time as the crossbow gains popularity as it seems to be doing, then what? Seems that nearly everyone could have that extended season... Unless you simply enjoy the challenge of bow hunting, and what it means to kill a deer with one, would it not make sense to most to just grab a crossbow and get the extended season.... So in the long run will this not have everyone hunting those extra months, not only shafting the bow hunters but also hitting the deer harder than currently... I know this is gonna stir the pot but i am noticing alot more people crossbow hunting and i am sure this is going to become an issue pretty soon and was just wondering what the rest of you thought and what is going to happen with this....
Well some of you know i found some serious hooking last weekend in the swamp and it paid off Saturday evening... At about 5pm i heard a footstep in the water and 10 minutes later there he was... Now i never shot a buck before and i had no idea how much shaking i would feel... Tried to gather myself but it wasn't happening... Finally i got a bit of an opening and there he fell dead... Talk about pumped, i let out a howl for the rest the swamp, lol.... 8pt 135lbs, he wasn't as big as the hooking on those trees looked, but for a first buck and my first year deer hunting i was thrilled!!! Then the half mile drag through the swamp was even more fun, lol.... I put out trail cams to see if that was him tearing those trees up or another so we will see... How old ya'll think this thing is.. my grandpa said about 3... Gotta love that public land swamp hunting!!!
How fresh do u guys think these rubs are?? they look like they been hit in the last day or so to me but i have no experience really to judge by...i been killin myself in the swamp all season and i finally find a promising area on the last weekend! jumped a deer and after investigating found about 6-7 of these trees hooked up all in a line comin from some mounds with some giant terds on them.... set my stand up off the line to give one final shot on this last weekend but was just wondering what you guys thought of how recent he's been hitting these trees and what else can be learned from them... Looks to be sizeable to me, trees are about 8-12" in diameter... I do know that it will be a trophy for me if i can get lucky!!!!! Any advice is welcome....
So i need u swamp pros to help me out... how do these deer act when there is a nice layer of ice on the water. do they still move or is it too difficult for them. All the way in to my spot today i was breaking ice and once in the climber i was sure i would hear the deer doing the same once the sun came but never heard any. obviously one day tells ya nothing but i have never hunted when it was like this so has me wondering if they wait til later in the day to move. i gave up at 11am cause my toes were frost bitten... I know with these temps its gonna stay iced until monday. just wondering how i should go about stalking that buck i am after. is it worth going early or what have u guys found
I need some help on getting a tree stand. i hunt in the swamp and its quite a hike so i need something pretty light and versatile, alot of the trees are pretty narrow. any of you swamp hunters have recommendations on a good versatile choice??
Thanks in advance
Well I am stuck at home with pnemonia and will miss the last weekend of duck hunting, so if you boys could help me out so i can feel part of the thrill lets hear those duck reports from this morning. Big Branch, Venice, Biloxi, Salvador, i hunt em all so i need something to smile about, cause i am feeling pretty low....
Any of you guys ever use that blind grass that they sell at Academy and Cabelas. I usually cut mung bushes to make my blind but that saltwater has killed my patch and made it to thin to hide me so i was thinking about trying that stuff. just wanted to hear some opinions on durability and how effective it is at concealing. I'm hunting in marsh grass where i would use it..
So do any of you guys have a trolling motor mounted on your pirogue..
I'm thinking i could put a bracket across the boat in ftont of my seat to mount the trolling motor off the side. That way i can operate it while sitting and if it gets hung in grass i can get it off. think this is better than the back or front, i can see the boat flipping trying to operate it in that position... Not sure how i would attach the bracket to the boat, i would like to make it adjustable where i coul just move it or take it on and off without bolting or anything.
Anyway lemme know if ya got some ideas or even better pictures!!
Anybody know a good reasonable taxidermist in Metairie area, Northshore/Hammond or Slidell? I have a couple ducks that i wanna get done and don't really know who to go to. Any help is aprpeciated.
Thanks in advance
Here's a trip from last week.. Brought the girls on this one, i didn't hardly get to fish, unhooking and netting as fast as i could and couldn't keep up. Caught about 50 in less than 2 hours til ran out of bait. Coulda caught double if had been all guys but it was ablast watching the girls fight those monster trout. Not sure what it is but those big trout are fighting hard this year..
thats an old deer, i wouldnt even see the need to cull him, he aint gonna make it much longer may as well let him live out his days... meat will be pretty tough and he may have had a rack at one point but he's just to old to grow one now it looks like!
Guys we are at the brink... Whether Obama gets re-elected or not doesnt matter... Dont be shocked if Gingrich gets in, and it wont matter. They are on the same team but use pointless talking points to play games with us....We are run by elitest and until we all wake up and realize that our system is totally corrupt we are doomed... Sheep herded into the pen!
well the truth is this guy does shady business, and has a history of it so this is a long time coming....
No offense Mrs Mitchell but this is not the first time your brother has done wrong, i could give examples but wont go there...
To those that think the penalties are too stiff, yes they may be for a regular guy but he is a charter captain, if they all did this we would have a majore problem.... And those fines given are MAX fines.... He will never see a tenth of that, we all know how the system works.. No one ever gets the max....
He will do no jail time and be fined $25K, i think that is more than fair
thats some thick bases there, congrats!
the more kick the more chance it has of hitting her eye... i would let her shoot a 22 a bit and get her used to her and then move her up. Once she is used to it u wont have that issue, but if u just throw a high powered rifle in her hand to shoot at a deer i could see it happening.... .243 is prolly a good fit
i wouldnt feel to bad for the guy as he has been doing shady stuff for quite awhile now so he was due for this...
As for the punishment, it should be more sever for charter fisherman, they do this for a living every day and if they are exceeding limits it really can put a dent in things. They have to make it extreme otherwise peopl would break the rules more often...
thats the problem with La. everything is who you know and pay off. Corrupt
that is a hawse right there
yeah i get ya jb but for someone to get that worked up over a guy driving in the left lane? I agree its annoying but people do annoying things all the time, just get over and pass him. And let people like you take care of him. someone pulling out on you or not turning their blinker on is also annoying and illegal... Just man up, brush it off and go on with your day... Its not that big a deal
i thought it was resolved a while back, that he accidentally discharge the weapon. what i read was that he often kept the gun loaded off safety and when he reached for it, something got caught and it fired. Maybe they are still investigating though
so was the guy going the speed limit? actually although aggravating its legal and sounds like you were the one trying to break the law and speed. Either way it should be simple enough to pass him. Sounds like a case of road rage
i just had the same problem on my 23. ran fine in the driveway but under a load it would die once it got to 3/4 throttle.. Mechanic told me it was a plugged jet... The rebuild kit is $107... I didnt have the time and was able to put on a carb from another motor and it fixed it...
Before you rebuild it try spraying carb cleaner in it while its running. Use the whole can. Its also worth trying to adjust the knobs while you are in the water though none of this worked for me. If this doesnt work you will have to take it apart and clean it but you will need that kit. If you take it to the shop do it soon cause most of them take a week to get to it.
you cant leave permanant blinds...
good start to the season!
good job man! i know you are pumped, it'll get better and better if you stick with it. Nice buck!
In ducks unlimited defense why would they sink money into something that our on state wont... Short of diversions whataver DU did for the area would be short lived unless our state steps up
I mainly hunt Joyce, i have been from one end to the next including the areas in the center. Used to duck hunt manchac... Hunt Maurepaus, mostly the eastern tract along hwy 51. Basically north of I10 from maurepaus to Lake ponchartrain... Been around reserve canal and all as well.
all i hunt are the swamps... The deer will mostly bed down on mounds around flooded swamp... they dont use the same beds every day but they rotate and often use the same beds. I like to find rub lines near beds... u can identify beds by looking for mounds that are full of their mess... dont set up too close as u will run them off but if u can find a rub line near those beds its money! I have killed a couple bucks the last 2 years in this manner... A nice 10 pt last year
I can gaurentee that the problem is the lack of sediment flow... I have hunted those areas my whole life and its dying a quick death now.. The marsh is further encroaching on the swamp every year and killing the trees. the swamp is getting deeper and deeper...
Plus though the salvania is bad there is still lots of that swamp that is free of it. You go back far enough and its clear, but there is still no feed or growth
Even if you killed the salvania it wouldnt matter cause the swamp will still die and still recede away, so there would still be no game...
Unless diversions are opened then there will be no living swamp to even have the salvania issue...
Makes me sick everytime i am back there which is all my free time in the winter.
wont happen, they damage the swamps and the appeal of those swamps is the access... U can get away from people. I sure hope they dont allow that
