Has anyone seen the signs of the rut starting in the Felecianas? I have not found a single scrape yet. I am seeing does but no bucks seem to be following. I had to kill a doe yesterday afternoon just because the rut seems to be late and I couldn't take it any more. Watched her too long while she was feeding.

What do you have to lose? Enter it everywhere you can. Especially if they have a category for largest 8pt. That is a monster.

No problem. I had assumed the 4 pt rule was still in effect but including the additional restrictions of spread or main beam length. I had overlooked the fact that they dropped the point restriction. I had read all over the MDWF web site and had complely missed it.

Good catch, Mississippi has abandoned the 4 pt rule. I was still thinking it was 4 pt AND a minimum spread or beam length.

Too many people for 400 acres. Standard rule of thumb is 1 person per 100 acres of land on average but this depends on the type of land you have available. Talk with your neighbor hunters. Are they managing?

As much as I hate to say it, a dictatorship is about the only way to manage a club with more than 5 or so people involved. The lease holder/president should set the rules, then potential members either agree with the rules or disagree. If they agree, they join, if not, then then do not become a member. This way, everyone is on the same page and not arguing about whether to manage or not and whether to manage for 4pt or for 4.5 yr old bucks.

There is nothing wrong with your club. You just need to decide if it will be a low price (more members), let's get together and kill a few deer and have a good time club or a higher price, (less members) put the money and work in for year round food plots, limited vehicle access, limited number of bucks taken, let's get together and kill a few big bucks and have a good time club.

The key is to have every one on the same page so that all members can enjoy their time spent hunting and not arguing about the club policies.

If you choose to manage, spend a little time on the Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries website reading about how the 4 pt rule has not produced the desired results and how they changed to 4 pt plus inside spread or main beam length. 4pt or better in St Francisville will most likely result in high grading the 1.5 yr old bucks and let less desireable 1.5yr old through which will result in overall smaller racks. You will, however, see more 2.5 yr old bucks after a couple of years.

In the end, it is the lease holders choice. Not eveyone is interested in managing. There are some people who just want to hunt.

You better kill them before they kill all of your deer. If they are showing no sign of being afraid of a human, guess who is next for dinner!

I had a spike chasing a doe Saturday morning and had 4 "new" bucks show up on camera. Unfortunately, I am having to work right now but I will be on them Thursday morning.

A comment titled: 243 in response to a report titled: 243 QUESTION

My son has killed 3 deer with his 243. Longest shot was about 100 yards and the deer dropped in it's tracks. I would say it is light for a hog though, shot placement would be very critical on larger hogs. If the child can handle the 7mm-08, I would suggest that. My son was 10 and very small and afraid of recoil from his 20 gauge so I went with the 243. I wouldn't push a shot past 200 yards with the 243 though.

I am hunting just north of Jackson. I am stating to think our buck to doe ratio may be out of whack and they just are not having to do much chasing. The spots where there are usually scraps in mid December just don't have them this year. Not sure why.

A comment titled: Feeding? in response to a report titled: Deer feeding

I have been feeding for years but I do beleive it causes more nocturnal activity. Deer do not get up and browse as much when feeders are scattered all over the woods. I would prefer eliminating corn, rice bran, beans, pettets and such but it would need to be by parish or statewide. I do use feed because everyone around me does it. If we could get everyone to stop then I feel we would see more daytime activity (dawn and dusk) as the deer would need to move more to feed. Until then, I have to do as the others..........

Also, I agree with the others. Pressure is the other culprit. Reduce the number of hunters, increases price though, and the deer be less pressured. Keep the daytime activy down by not putting corn out daily and not checking cameras daily. Reduce 4 wheeler activity to deer retreival and to fill a feeder only after is is out. Unfortunately, my club doesn't follow these rules so I do as they do.

The only deer that I have killed at a feeder or at corn are does. My son has taken a spike but no rack deer at a feeder.

Looks to be over 2.5 old but any way it goes, it is a nice deer for the Fla parishes. Great character and deserving of a wall mount.

Expect to share the woods with the dog hunters. You will encounter them sooner or later. This is not a bad thing. Deer will get up and move to slip away from the dogs, even if they are not the ones being run.

A comment titled: No does in response to a report titled: Are you satisfied with the 3 buck 3 doe limit?

Get rid of the open season on does and go back to limited doe days. I am tired of going in the woods and not seeing deer. While we are at it, get rid of corn feeders. Deer may actually have to get up and walk around to find food....during the daylight hours.
