I have not been to Elmers Island in a long time, and I have a few questions. i know that Saturday is going to be a little windy.

Can you drive on the beach and if so how are the conditions. I have 4x4 but sand can look ok and suck all 4 tires down very quickly if it is not packed well enough.

Are there any special permits that have to be filled out now that the LDWF is in control of the island i.e. self clearing permits like the ones for wildlife management areas.

How has the fishing been the past few weeks. mainly this is a trip for my three year old to get out of the house and to the beach, and i was going to bring some fishing rod and and maybe see if he is going to like it before I decide to put him in the boat.

I am thinking of trying to fish lafitte this weekend, and I was wondering where I could pick up some live croakers for bait. I called Joe's today, but all they sell is shrimp and cockahoe's. I never have had any luck with cockahoe minnows. Any assistace would be greatly appreciated.

I need some help! I have 2 spinning reels that need some attention and cleaning. I have called Chags and Puglias to see if they can recomend someone. Chags could not take it because his guy was in the hospital and Puglias refered me to somewhere on Julia St in New Orleans. I have googled it with no avail. I need some Ideas because I do not want to take these reels apart and mess something up. Anyone know of a place in the new orleans area i.e. Metairie, Kenner, or Laplace that I can take my reels?

I am in the market for a new truck I have read all of the reviews, and have narrowed my decision down to the nissan titan 4x4 crew cab or the ford f 150 4x4 crew cab. My problem with the nissan is that I feel if I pay the kind of money that they are asking for them I think that they could do something a little better with the interior. I also can't find a lot of safey data on the nissan. The ford on the other hand has great safety ratings nice interior and very good ratings overall it just doesn't have the power the nissan has. What do you guy's drive?

How long of a ride do you guys think it would be from bait Inc on Paris rd. to Shell Beach if I were to go by boat via the MRGO. My cruising speed is 42mph.

August 17, 2009 at 3:05pm

I am getting back into fishing and I am a little rusty. Is 10lb test power pro with a 20-40 lb test leader good for your average 16-24" red fish.

I just wanted to know if any of you guys out there have had any good luck with ford dealerships in the state. I am in the market for a new f150 ext cab 4x4, and it seems like the only people who want to deal are dealerships out of state. I am looking to upgrade due to me and my wife having a 10mo son and the ranger 4x4 is not cutting it anymore. Please let me know how you feel about the dealers here.

I AM IN NEED OF AN ATV MECHANIC. I HAVE A 1998 HONDA FOREMAN 450S THAT HAS A FEW PROBLEMS. I KNOW HOW TO DO THE WORK, BUT WITH A NEW BABY I DO NOT HAVE THE TIME. ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APRECIATED. I DO NOT WANT TO DEAL WITH THE DEALER INFACT I WOULD RATHER SINK IT IN THE RIVER RATHER THAN DEAL WITH THE HONDA DEALER. I LIVE IN LAPLACE AND I AM WILLING TO TRAVEL 1HR.

WELL GUY'S I RECIEVED A NEW GUN FOR CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR. IT IS A REMINGTON SPR 453. NOW I KNOW THAT REMINGTON DOES NOT MAKE IT THEY EXPORT IT FROM RUSSIA AND PUT THIER NAME ON IT. WELL SAT MORNING I PUT IT TO WORK AND IT PERFORMED GREAT AS FAR A I AM CONCERNED. THE GAS OPPERATED SEMI AUTO DID NOT JAM OR GIVE ME ANY PROBLEMS. I FEEL THAT FOR A SEMI AUTO THAT COSTS 300.00 AND PERFORMS GOOD IS NOT BAD. NOT TO FORGET THAT IT COME IN 2-3/4, 3 ,AND 3-1/2" CHAMBER. AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED IT HAS DONE EVERYTHING I NEEDED IT TO DO.

Sat. morning was great. Shot a good mixed bag consisting of grey's, mallards, spoonies, and 1 beautiful bw teal drake in full plume. I want to mount him but need advice on a good waterfowl taxidermist.

December 14, 2008 at 4:20pm

Well today was the last hunt of the first split for me. So far this has been the best season for me since I have started duck hunting. It maybe just because I am starting to get more experienced in the art of waterfowling or i was just lucky this season so far. I have been duck hunting for about 10 years now, and my calling is getting better as well as my decoy spreads.
Because of work, and getting adjusted to starting a new family. I have only been able to make 4 hunts with great success. With a 2 man blind my dad and I managed 40 ducks which consisted mainly grey ducks.
I do have one question. Does anyone hunt that area and have success shooting wigeon? I would love to put a drake on my wall but I just don't see any.

I am thinking of purchasing my wife a 20ga. for xmas this year in hopes that she will want to join me duck hunting next year. I was wandering what is best for her first shotgun auto. or pump.

November 17, 2008 at 6:57am

this morning was the best opener i have ever seen. i we had shot better we would have had a 2 man limit by 7:30 but after 7:45 everything slowed down. ended the morning with 2greys,3teal,5spoonies. awsome!

November 08, 2008 at 2:56pm

A comment titled: Bears in response to a report titled: Black Bears

Even if they did open a bear season or a lottery hunt down here it still will not solve the problem. You will only be able to harvest maybe 5 in the whole state. I think the fact is that these bears have no fear of humans, and really don't have any reason to fear us because we have not put any pressure on them. I think they need to let people purchase a tree and release permit which would allow people to act as if they were on an organize bear hunt, and let us use hounds to tree them. Once tree'd take a photo gather your dogs and on to the next. I will more that bet you that a month or two of that, and most of your bear problems will be gone. They will be back to only seeing prints in the road or creek bed.

I lease a portion of marsh on the other side of the dyke canal from the spoil area for duck hunting, and I have never seen anyone hunting it nor have I ever heard any shots come from in there.

A comment titled: dog in response to a report titled: Did a dog get shot?

My dog whales in the boat if we miss a bird or if one comes in and we do not see it and she does. She sounds like a dog that has been hit by a car and is trying to crawl in the street. It is horrible I have to lay on her to get her to settle down so we can resume hunting.

A comment titled: Too Warm in response to a report titled: Gators while Duck Hutning

In my opinion it is too warm for my dog to go out this weekend. She will be staying at home Saturday morning. As long as I have hunted Bayou Bienvenue I have only seen 1 gator, but all it takes is 1.

A comment titled: public hunt in response to a report titled: out of state public hunt

North Dakota is a good place especially if the ponds are already frozen over. If you can find a pond that still has open water you can hunt it everyday that you are there as long as it does no freeze. The ducks just fly in circles and land in the same place eazy limits as long as you can shoot good. As far a public land as long as the land is not posted you can hunt it. If there is a posed sign and you see a slough full of water fowl you can try and contact the land owner their number is usually on the sign explain who you are where you are from and what you want to do and more times than not they will say it is ok to hunt thier. Just DON'T HUNT POSTED LAND WITHOUT PERMISSION OUT THERE THEY DO NOT TOLERATE IT.

A comment titled: spr 453 in response to a report titled: Remington SPR 453

I own one and I love it so far. I have only owned it for 1 season but I never had a problem with it. I keep it very clean though. If you look on youtube there is a canadian testing one and he dips it in a frozen lake and then dumps a 5 gallon bucket on marsh mud in the action. For the price I feel it is a great gun. I only payed a little over $300 for it at cabelas.

A comment titled: There is a difference in response to a report titled: Dogs On Hunting Lease

dubya-1 is wrong! There is a difference between wild dogs and coyotes. Dogs do no fear humans that makes them more dangerous. Your sent will deter a coyote, but not a feral dog especially a pack. I just hope if they are wild "feral" that the youngsters in your lease that are just starting to hunt alone don't come across the pack while going in or coming out of the woods.Get rid of them legal or not!!!

A comment titled: Locks in response to a report titled: How long of a ride

That would suck if the locks were closed when I got back from fishing. I have had a duck lease inside the locks since 2004 and I have only seen or heard of the locks being closed once or twice in five years. Mainly due to heavy fog or a tropical storm or hurricane. Thanks for the replies

A comment titled: thanks in response to a report titled: How long of a ride

The reason I was asking is that I went down to hopedale yesterday. I has been a few years by I am now getting time to go fishing again. Anyway it just seemed like it took such a long time to drive down there and when I started thinking about the fuel in the truck the fuel in the boat the bait and the price for a launch not to mention the time spent driving Bayou Bienvenue seemed like a better deal. I am not saying anything bad about hopedale or the price for a launch down there but for me it just seems like a better deal to work my way down there. I am sure i can find some good spots on the way that just may be a little closer

I AGREE WITH NUTRIA EATER. YOUR DOG HAS TO UNDERSTAND THE IDEA OF THE SHOCK COLLAR. I WAS TOLD THAT BY THE GUY WHO TRAINED MY LAB. ALSO BEFORE YOU USE ONE MAKE SURE YOU STUDY ON IT BEFORE YOU USE IT. YOU CAN RUIN A DOG VERY QUICKLY IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
