Hey guys!

I just ended up biting the bullet and purchasing my first fishing kayak. I live in the New Orleans area, and although i have some experience fishing my own pond, i dont have very much experience kayak fishing. None at all actually. I was basically wondering where to start? Where is a good area for me and my brother, who just bought his first one also, to take our first couple trips? We were thinking the bayou st john area or lake ponchartrain for our first couple goes. Where are some good places within an hour or so drive for beginners to start? Also, any tips for a kayak n00b? Anything i wouldnt expect on the first trip or anything like that? I bought a used pelican thats extremely similar to the Pelican Strike 100x, just an older slightly used model. i dont have a photo right now, but here is a link for the similar model:

Hey guys,

I'm from the New Orleans area and attend Southeastern. So I'm generally around the northshore and southshore. I have property in MS and love pond fishing. I've just recently started to look for spots on the southshore and northshore to fish things like crappie, brim, catfish, and bass. I've tried Bogue Chitto State Park and City Park lagoons in NOLA so far with no luck. Used a good variety of beetles, spinners, jigs, etc. with not much luck. I would consider myself a beginner level fisherman. Any tips on good places to start in southeast Louisiana for crappie fishing? I have no boat, and am planning on getting a kayak somtime next year. But not yet. Would love to post results.

I like hearing all the great advice. Thanks guys, I have written some of this down. I just got my Pelican kayak ready to go fishing on the water so I am looking to take it out this week or next. I live in the Kenner/New Orleans area. I was looking for something a little less than an hours drive away for my very first trip. This way if i get out somewhere without stuff i need or vehicle trouble or anything like that, im in a familiar area. I was thinking about trying the Bonnet Carre Spillway, going in the manchac area off I55, Bayou Sauvage, or lake Maurepas area. I know The Pen, and Little Lake areas are really good right? thats only an hour so i might try those for my first attempt. Any tips on where are good places to launch in those areas, things to look for, or things of that nature? This will be my first ever 'Fishing Expedition' where im calling the shots and I have no idea what im doing as far as where and when to go. Any pointers would be much appreciated. Im going to go out with some Berkley Gulp! shrimp, scented soft berkley minnows, and a decent assortment of jigs, DOA Shrimp, and many other soft lure combos. Im also going to bring some dead shrimp out with me as well for bait.
