I have never bought a gun online, and am a little leary of doing it. Has anyone had any experience with these folks, and or good / bad experiences purchasing guns online in general?

I think I am going to retire the old smoke pole and get a cartridge gun to use during the primitive weapon season. I am looking at the Handi Rifle in 444 Marlin. Does anybody know who has a good deal on these? Any horrible problems I should be aware of?

Thanks,

B

Thanks Eman. I have one of those little Brinkmans. I think i'll play with it this weekend and fabricate some rods and give it a try. Don't know why I never thought of doing that.

I did all of mine as well. I made a bunch of roasts, steaks, tenderized steaks for CFS, stew meat, ground meat etc... Also made a bunch of breakfast sausage. One of these days I want to work up to making smoked sausage, but I don't have a big enough smoker. Yet......

I've had two explorers. Got rid of the first one running fine with 262K miles and still driving the second one. It's got right at 200K. Before that I had a Chevy S-10, which was also a good truck. I find that the Fords have a little better fit and finish. Had a little problem on my S-10 with things like door handles breaking, radio knob falling off... all minor, but aggrivating things. As far as I'm concerned, that's the major difference. Either one will run forever if it's taken care of.

Props to Andy for doing his part to promote the King's english. Some of the posts on here set the language back years, if not decades.

Stingray,

Sorry I don't have any input on your question, but I am about to purhase one of those rifles today or tomorrow. I was wondering how you liked it. It looks like a heck of a lot of gun for the money. Did you get the blued, or the stainless?

We hunt just North of Sherburne on hwy 71. I never saw any chases, and only started seeing heavy scraping activity during the last week of the gun season. I think we missed the rut entirely.

A comment titled: 870 in response to a report titled: Remington 870 Express

I agree with everybody else. My 870 Express is known as "RUSTY" to all my hunting companions. When I first got it, I hunted in a brackish marsh and by the time I paddled back to my truck and drove home, the rust spots would already be forming. I just keep er wiped down with shield and run that cat tail thing through the barrel periodically and it is fine. I tried hunting with some of that high dollar European trash for a while, but I sold it and went back to ole Rusty. I can honestly say, that I have probably fired ten ten thousand shells through that gun and it has NEVER (not once) had a malfunction and has never had a part replaced. Best shotgun ever.

I know. I killed a greenwing teal drake this year in St. Landry Parish that was banded in Northwest Territories, Canada. Hard to imagine....

Marinate them in your favorite marinade overnight. Grill them over a hot fire and leave them slightly pink in the middle like you would a steak. Wrapping them in bacon never hurts either.

Dale's marinade. Has a white label with a pic of a black cow. I think they should change it to a black deer... but that's just me.

RA

I'm afraid that there isn't much you can do. I used to hunt near there and that place has the most intense hunting pressure I have ever seen. Literally every house has a box stand behind it. I know a guy who is in a club that has 14 members on 200 acres (that's 12 too many). Throw in the hounds and the road hunters and it's a wonder anybody ever sees a deer. As you know, there are plenty of deer there, but they are the most nocturnal, skittish deer I have ever seen. Anybody who can consistantly kill good deer there is better than Jackie Bushman, Michael Wadell and Will Primos combined.

A comment titled: Ammo in response to a report titled: SAVAGE 17.hmr

If you are itching for a .17, by all means get it. Any gun purchase is a good gun purchase. But, i'd check out your .22 ammo first. I have a .22 that will shoot the whole clip into one ragged hole with CCI Mini Mags. If you use any other brand ammo, it sprays them all over the target. .22's can be really finicky.

A comment titled: Nice! in response to a report titled: pics of the last 4 days in greenhead heaven

Man that's awesome. We don't kill that many greenheads in a year. Did you hunt with an outfitter? I'm looking to make a trip up there next year with 4 or 5 friends and would welcome any suggestions. I hunted there several years ago with Johnny Mahfouz. Does anybody know if he is still guiding?

A comment titled: Trailer Parts in response to a report titled: Boat trailer work

I would skip Academy and go to a place that specializes in trailers. I have worked with Mike Gerald at Trailer Depot in Baton Rouge. They know what they are talking about and will make sure you leave with the right stuff the first time. There is also another place on Airline on the left as you are leaving town going toward Prairieville (can't remember the name). I have used them as well and they are good.

A comment titled: Wishful Thinking in response to a report titled: A must read for the waterfowl guys

Dude,

You can puff your chest out if you like and tell people they have to hunt harder, move around more, blah blah blah. The fact is, that ducks don't come here like they used to. Places like the Atchafalaya Spillway, Geydan, Wax Lake Outlet, Maurepas Swamp, Catahoula Lake... The Holy Grails of waterfowl hunting are shells of their former selves.

Is it DU's fault? I'm sure it isn't. If I thought that, I wouldn't send them my money every year. The fact is, nobody knows why. I think that the flyway has just shifted West. That's just my opinion though, i am certainly not a duck biologist.

My point is, people didn't forget how to hunt. Pretending that there are as many ducks as there used to be doesn't make it so.
