I'm hoping someone can give me some advice for getting on some fish on the northshore or even somewhere within decent driving distance of Mandeville. My dad has a hobie kayak that he lets me borrow whenever I want, and I've decided I should get some more use out of it. I've taken it out in Cane Bayou and Castine a number of times and usually catch a few bass (typically on a brushog or fluke). I haven't really saltwater fished since I was a kid fishing out of Dularge (with the exception of the occasional offshore trip), but I suddenly got the itch to try to catch some specs/redfish/anything saltwater. Not looking for anyone's secret spots, just a little advice to get going. Anything would be greatly appreciated!
I ended up going to Lacombe and decided to grab some frozen shrimp just in case I got desperate. Pretty much started at the mouth and went E a couple miles then worked my way back. Tried spinner baits, soft plastics, even rattle traps, but no luck. Just for kicks I had the shrimp on a cork floating behind me and actually caught two reds like that (each one about 15.5ââ¬Â). I need to figure out how to catch em on the plastics, but it was certainly enough to make me go back.
Oneofthepack and Mandevillian, thanks for the responses. I am actually trying to get out there this Friday; considering either Cane Bayou or Lacombe Obviously it is going to be a trial run for me, but still hoping to get a few bites. Worst case I will get a better feel for the lay of the land
I actually managed to get back out there today. Put the kayak in at the end of lake rd like last time. Went towards goose point and fished most of the morning with no luck. Finally decided to head towards bayou Lacombe and picked up one 16.5ââ¬Â red on my second or third cast and missed another good bite. Unfortunately, the rain started soon after and I was running out of time so called it a day. Going to try to get back out there sometime next week
