My 8 year old son Gavin killed this 6 point on the morning of Saturday December 18th at our club in Holden, LA. This deer gave us a second chance after running across our lane the first time. I grunted a few times, and a few minutes later he circled back and popped back in the lane. He made this one easier for me than the one he shot last weekend by dropping this one in his tracks.

My 8 year old son Gavin shot this 9pt on the afternoon of December 11th. We were hunting at our club in Holden, LA and he was in the stand with his mom. After the shot they seen the buck kick and run off. Not sure of there shot I looked a bit and little blood and signs of a gutshot, or at least the bullet hit the gut at some point. We were hunting in front of a cold front and rain was coming so I called the guys at Southern Bloodtrackers to see if someone was available with a dog. I got a call back from Scott Hill who came help us that night along with a couple of good buddies. A strong line of rain came through and washed all the blood away but we still gave it a try that night. We resumed the next morning with Scott, his dog Remmy and one of my good friends and found the deer less than an hour later Scott was hollering he found it. Not knowing what I would see when I got to him I was surpried to find out it was a 175 pound 9pt. Thanks to all my friends and Scott Hill w/ Southern Bloodtrackers on helping my son get his first rack buck. The shot was not as far back as I thought just a little low. The deer had ran about 160 yards. To all the non-believers of blood dogs or just inquiring do yourself a favor and check out there website @ They really do work, this case was 12 hours later and after a heavy rain. Put some of the guys numbers who are closest to you in your phone because you never know when you may need it. These guys aren't here to make money but because they love running there dogs.

My son Gavin Vicknair 7 years old had an exciting opening weekend but could not seem to connect. Opening morning of rifle season he missed a hog, and the second morning missed a doe. After he got those two shots out the way to calm his nerves he told me he wasn't going to miss next time. Yesterday 11/25 two does each about the same size came out feeding around 5:05. I told him to pick the one that was further in the clearing. He said he was on her, and asked me if he could take her. As you see in the pics the rest is history. Perfect behind the shoulder shot at 80yds with the 30-30 Remington managed recoil loads. She ran about 30 yards. He was really pumped adding another deer to his young career. Now he is hunting horns for the rest of the season.

Anyone know where I could either buy or get two free 55 gallon metal drums between the LaPlace and Baton Rouge area to make a feeder? Don't need the lids, just two clean metal drums in good shape.

Shot this buck on 12/20/08 at our club in Holden, north east corner of Livingston Parish. At daylight me and my son watched a 3 point for about 20 minutes then he left. About 10 minutes later he came back by chasing a doe then they ran off. Somewhere around 7:30 two does and a yearling started feeding. These deer ran off then the yearling came back feeding but kept looking back. I kept hearing something so I picked up the gun and out come this dude at about 70 yards about to cross my shooting lane. He has an 18 1/2 inside spread and 20 1/2'' main beams. The deer also looked like he had a broken leg and healed back over around the knee area. It had a big knot about double the size of the other leg.

My son Gavin Vicknair who is 6 years old shot a doe on the opening morning of rifle season at our club in Livingston Parish. This was not his first but from excitement you would have thought it was. We got in the two-man ladder stand around 5:30 a.m. and he probably stayed awake for the first hour then dozed off. The morning was starting real windy and cold then around 7:40 the wind slacked a little and sun came out. I looked down the shooting lane and 4 deer showed up about 80 yards away. I woke my son and showed him the deer and immediately said he wanted to shoot the big doe. The one he wanted kept going in the woods chasing off the other three deer and would not stay still. Then after about 5 minutes of hold on don't shoot, ok, hold on, she was almost broadside quartering to us a little. I told him to take her. She jumped up and nose dived and took off towards the thicket. We got down and looked for blood but could not find any, after about 15-20 minutes I circled and found her. The 30-30 125 managed recoil bullet hit the spot, but could not explain for no blood trail. She ran about 50 yards total. After we found her I remember seeing this doe last year noticing the white spots on her back.

Trying to decide on what brand and grain bullets to shoot out of my 45-70. I bought a CVA optima elite a while back and just about getting around to shooting it. What are most of ya'll shooting? What kind of distance are ya'll sighting in at? I know the gun isn't long range and have not looked at the ballistics yet but wondering if anyone has any experience with these guns yet. Thanks,

I have a cheap Pep Boys special generator that I have owned for like two years, and never had any problems always cranks on the first pull. About two weeks ago I changed the oil and ran it, everything ran fine. Then I brought it to the camp to do some work and after starting it, I could only get it to run smooth half choked. I figured I had flooded it by moving it around but changed the plug and same results. I took the carburator down this evening as much as I knew how and sprayed out the float area and the baffles, put it back together and the same thing. I know the carburator has some adjustmens but hate to screw with that since I never had to mess with it before. Wanted to see if anyone had any advice on what to try and see what I'm not understanding about it. Thanks for any advice.

This morning I set up after a long walk to this spot I had heard a henned up gobbler last weekend. Before it even got good light I could hear loggin equipment cranking up close by on an adjacent property. Listened for a little while longer than decided to walk on before it got too late. I walked probably a good two miles calling about every 100 yards or so. Finally when I got to the spot I decided I would end up turning around to circle back I decided to try my slate call. I had been using a diagphram. All of a sudden he lit up the woods about 150-200 yards in a swampy open floored drain. I hurried up and tried to find a tree to duck into. Finally found a descent spot and called a few more times. He gobbled back a few times and kind of sounded like he was trying to circle me. After about 20 minutes of silence I called again he gobbled back and he was out in front of me and even sounded further away. I decided to push in another 30 yards or so and dropped down again. Never heard a peep after that. I figured I had him for sure! It would of been a hell of a walk back with a bird but would have gladly did it. After about an hour of sitting I gave up and circled back to my bike. Then I came back down another road in the direction I figured he had gone but tried calling and didn't hear crap! I'm gonna give it another go in the morning. Hopefully I didn't spook him and he was with hens and tommorrow he'll be in the same roost area. Gonna have my 5 year old with me so hopefully he will hear one gobble and get the fever. We don't have a blind so it's gonna be tough not getting busted with the two of us.

This question goes out to you deer/duck hunters who have small clubs leases or individuals who lease land. I'm interested in leasing some land from a family in St. Charles Parish. What's the legal way to write up the lease? Do I have to go to an attorney or a notary or do I file something with the parish? Also how do you mark your property line barriers without paying out the wazoo from a survey company? The land is about 225 acres of swamp so I'm not sure what a survey would cost. Could I possibly have the parish pull up an old survey record. I already checked into the insurance but trying to be safe and legal for myself and the leasee. Thanks if you can help.

Well folks it all came together this morning! My son Gavin who is 5 1/2 years old has been wanting to hunt since he started coming with me last year and the feeling has been mutual. The only gun I found that barely fit and was lethal for him was a 410 with a slug. I had an oppurtunity to bring him this morning for the opening day of the area 1 youth weekend to the lease I belong to in Livingston Parish. After finding out he would only be able to shoot a buck, because the club president opted not to shoot any does through October because they might have little ones things looked gloomy. That is because since opening day of bow season I have only seen one buck, a small 4 point. We set out this morning in hopes to set up a ground blind near one of my feeders. When we got near where my two trails come together I asked my son where he wanted to hunt. He showed me the stand on the East side of the road. This is where we headed, we tried to set up on the ground but after looking around decided this wouldn't work. We regrouped and decided to set up in my double ladder about 70yds away from my feeder. It wasn't till around 7:20 when I heard a deer sneaking up my trail. I whispered to my son to get ready, he looked and the deer looked. The deer took a few more steps and stopped. I seen he was the lil 4 point I had been seeing and told my son to get the gun up. When we set the gun up on the rail of the stand the deer heard us so I told him to shoot him. The deer ran out to about 35yds and stopped I said shoot him dude. I tried to help him aim since the deer was quartering away. All of sudden boom and deer dropped. I told my son lets get down and get him, crept up to him and he was still breathing. I then let him finish him off with a shot to the neck. All I can say was the deer gods were lookin down on us today. He's hooked now and a future hunting buddy for me. He said what's up widow!!!!!

I have a 5 year old raring to go this weekend for the youth hunt. He's not old enough for a rifle but has shot the 410 a few times. Plan on letting shoot a 410 slug set up at a range around 30 yards. I shot the gun last weekend and it paterned good at this range. Has anyone killed a deer with a 410 slug? Just wondering what to expect if it's a decent placed shot. Thanks.

Has the bass fishing around Lake Cataouche slowed down? Thinking about making a morning trip Sat or Sun and was looking for some tips since I haven't been there in years. Is Pier 90 a paid launch? When you get out of Pier 90 canal where have they been catching and on what? Should I just start fishing grass beds as soon as I get into the lake? Thanks for any help.

Anyone have any reports of fish being caught at the power lines back of LaPlace, or catfish or reds biting near the mouth of Lake Salvador/Des Allemans? I'm gonna try and bring the family for a short trip tommorrow and was lookin for some tips on where to go or what baits to use. Thanks.

Shot this 8 point yesterday afternoon trying to slip across my shooting lane near the end of my food plot. This was the only deer I saw this afternoon and shot him around 5:10p.m. His tarsal glands were starting to stink pretty good. I estimated his weight around 150 pounds.

A comment titled: Deffect Issues in response to a report titled: Pro Ride Trailers

If Jason would just try and address these issues with the problems that myself and others on here stated he would save his name and reputation. I am over the fact it took way longer than expected to get my trailer, and the license. However I would feel gratified just for him to take care of the improper workmanship issues. Most of them are relatively inexpensive like sandblasting, priming and painting the trailer correctly. Grind down some of the meat hooks that were left from some nasty welds etc. As far as I have seen on my trailer the trailer is sound but there is no grinding done what so ever after welds. The electrical wiring on the lights are really poor. Jason, if you happen to read this please do the right thing and address some of our issues that your loyal customers have. That would be in or out of warranty because you know dang well you have been contacted within the original warranty period. If Pro Ride would do this they would be helping out there business as well.

A comment titled: Same Experience Here in response to a report titled: Pro Ride Trailers

Guys, I had the same experience mentioned here with my trailer. He had great prices, and great promises but that's all. My trailer was months behind. I had to call probaly 20 times. He kept saying he is waiting for it to be painted. When my trailer was picked up the paint was wet and dripping. The first time I used the trailer it rained and the rain from the road made the paint peel all around the fenders. He definitely does not use any primers nor does any prep work. Alot of jagged edges all around the trailer that another half hour with a grinder would have made a way smoother job. I would pay a $1000 more not to deal with this headache again. I really liked the idea of a trailer built to my specs but this was not a pleasant experience. I'm not sure what the problem is with the business, because it appears he has alot of work lined up. Odviously it hasn't gotten better since my dealing with him.

A comment titled: Buckhorn WMA in response to a report titled: Lodging Question

Buckhorn Headquarters does not allow you to clean your deer there. You pretty much just go there to check in before and after hunts. Me and my son went on the lottery hunt for Thanksgiving weekend. I think 6 deer were killed that weekend. There is a small campground called Bob's campground about 10 minutes away. They have a skinning rack, and sink. He also rents some old campers. We stayed about 40 minutes away and rented a camper at Yucatan landing. They also had a skinning rack. Some of the hotels in Winnsboro will probably have a skinning rack outside the hotel. Email me if I can help, and I could give you my number if you need anything. Good luck, yall should do ok, since we finally got some rain.

A comment titled: Browning BOSS in response to a report titled: Rifle HElP!!

I have an A-bolt with the BOSS in 7mm Mag with the composite stock. I don't want to brag but I have not had any problems with mine once set, except for a few times with operator error. At the range mine is a tac driver as long as you don't pinch down on the front of the front of the stock where you have the needed clearance with the floating barrel. One time I was shooting it at the range just to check for zero and I had a vise type bench rest that clamped down the front of the gun. It shot all over the place. I find even if you grip the gun to hard in the front it will throw it off. I have learned just let my hand rest a little farther back when shooting. The only thing I dislike about my gun is that I am always bumping the tip of the barrel getting in and out of the stand, and that always makes me wonder if it will throw me off the next time I shoot.

A comment titled: Remington .270 managed recoil in response to a report titled: Father & Son Rifle to share

My son is also 8 years old. I bought him an H&R .243 this year and had grouping problems. Being in a bind we had the scope taken off of the .243 and put on my .270 and moved the scope back to have more eye relief for when he shoulders the gun. He fit the gun perfectly and it is a Weatherby Vanguard adult model. I went to Academy and bought the 115 grain managed recoil rounds and he has killed three deer this year and shot his furthest at 145 yards. I feel confident in bringing this one gun to the stand with us. It may also depend on what type of stand you hunt out of. Our stands have rest that the forearm sits on. Good luck.

My experience in the Holden area which is area 1 where I hunt is that we are in the post rut. Sure you may have a deer are two still catching the second rut. We are still seeing a few deer, but there paterns surely change this time of the year. The deer still have to feed especially with the freeze killing alot of the browse. They are smarter and more nocturnal also this late in the season which doesn't help.

A comment titled: Maurepas WMA in response to a report titled: Possible New Management Land in St. John Parish/LaPlace

Unless something new was just added in the past week are so this is the area that (CAJUN HOPPER) is talking about. I spoke with Chris Davis w/ W&F a few weeks back and as of now there are no road or water access to this section except from the lake shore as shown on the map. He said the lawyers were working on using public access to the launch by the swamp tour place. The area is not right behind Bully's but it does look like it comes south of the pipeline that is closest to the lake. The boundaries are already marked because when you are on I-10 back of Laplace on the bridge you can look down and see sections of signs and yellow paint.

Always sight your bow in for what you plan on hunting with (broadheads). Always practice from a height you plan on hunting from. I shoot a pendulum sight and different heights make a difference with my bow. Not sure if this is what works for everybody but it works for me and my bow.
