I JUST BOUGHT THE CVA ELITE STALKER IN THE .35 WHELEN. THIS GUN WILL NOT GROUP THE HORNADY 200 GRAIN SUPERFORMANCE ROUNDS AT ALL. I HAVE SECURED ALL SCREWS FOR BASES AND SCOPE MOUNTS WITH LOCKTITE AND STILL THE GUN WILL NOT GROUP THE HORNADY ROUNDS. IF ANYONE ELSE HAS THIS GUN, ANY SUGGESTIONS ON OTHER AMMUNITION WOULD BE APPRECTIATED. THANKS.

If you have the CVA Elite, I have the same gun and started with the same ammo last season. It would not hit a barn at ten feet with the Hornady Superformance Rounds. I went through nearly two boxes. After shooting the gun that many times, I took the gun apart. The pillar which locks to the forearm to the barrel bent and would not stay tight. I sent the gun back to the manufacturer and they welded it. When I got it back I switched to the 200 grain Federal Fusions and now the gun is a tack driver. The Hornady Superformance is terrible with accuracy in the .35 whelen. Trust me, this same thing happened to me with my CVA Elite. 35Whelen last season right before hunting season.
Again if it is a CVA Elite, remove the forearm and tighten the set-screw on the pillar. Also change the screw that goes through the forearm to the pillar which came with the gun, and replace it with a good stainless screw. Make sure you lock-tite everything. Bases, rings, and your Forearm stock screw. Switch to the federal fusion 200 grains and you should be golden. If it isn’t the gun Federal Fusion 200 grain. I shot one deer last year at 225 yds in the marsh. It flopped immediately. Good luck!!!

A comment titled: DOGS in response to a report titled: Dogs shot

I WAS ON MY LEASE IN MISSISSIPPI THIS WEEKEND. TWO DOGS RAN TWO DOES PAST ME. I DID NOT SHOOT THE DOGS. OTHER HUNTERS SAY THEY WOULD HAVE SHOT THE DOGS. IF YOU ARE SUCH A LOW LIFE AS TO SHOOT ANOTHER MANS DOGS, YOU SHOULD BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW. YOU SHOULD ALSO LOSE YOUR HUNTING PRIVLEDGE FOR 5 YEARS. DOG HUNTERS, IF YOU INTENTIONALLY TRESPASS, YOU ALSO SHOULD ALSO HAVE YOUR HUNTING PRIVLEDGES REVOKED FOR 5 YEARS. THIS IS RIDICULOUS THAT PEOPLE WOULD SHOOT A DOG BECAUSE THEY RAN A DEER. HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF THE DOG HUNTERS STARTED BUSTING WINDSHIELDS ON VEHICLES, i BET THAT WOULD STIR UP THE STILL HUNTERS IRE. FOR THE RECORD, I'M A STILL HUNTER, BUT THIS IS ABSURD!!! HOPEFULLY THESE CRIMINALS ARE CAUGHT AND PROSECUTED. SHERIFFS OFFICE, YOU COULD DO BETTER THAN THIS!!!

A comment titled: 35 whelen CVA Elite Stalker in response to a report titled: CVA EILTE STALKER 35 WHELEN

I am only shooting one round every ten minutes, then running a bore snake after the second round, so a hot bore probably isn't the problem. The scope is the Nikon Prostaff 3x9x50, but i have this scope on a .444 and have had no issues with the scope regarding recoil. I picked up a box of Federal Fusion 200 grains and will try this tomorrow. Hopefully that works, if not, I'm changing the bases and rings.

A comment titled: Game Wardens in response to a report titled: Pearl River WMA interrupted by warden

I had a warden check me on Friday in Salvador WMA. I was scouting deer and came out into the lake when he stopped me. He check my boat registration, license, and drivers license. I did not have a fire extinguisher and also had my gas powered pole saw with me.He gave me a warning about the extinguisher and asked what was the pole saw doing in the boat. I repleid truthfully, 'I had it in my truck since I went cut trees on my lease the prior day and did not want it stolen at the launch, so I brought it along.' He was fine with that. That man never gave me an attitude, and did his job accordingly. He could have gave me a ticket for the extinguisher and the pole saw, but didn't. I agree with his professionalism, but we do have jerks that abuse their spot. Remember to get their name, it is on their shirt, and file a formal complaint if warranted. But also remember, law enforcement will treat you with a harsh attitude if you have an attitude. So we need to be cordial when encountering them as well, because they do a job that most will not consider.

A comment titled: pinpointing movement in response to a report titled: lost!

If you feed heavily, the deer should have made fairly defined trails coming to the feed. Just follow the trails and you should be able to get a good guess of where they are bedding. Set up as close as possible without jumping the deer. I personally like evening hunts best, that’s what I would try. If you are not getting any pictures in daylight follow the trails and set up away from the feed in the direction the deer are coming from. I had this same problem with a nice buck last year, he would come in during daylight before season, then once the season started he would only be on camera at night then he vanished. I saw multiple deer, small bucks and does at this spot early season and started noticing dried mucus on my camera and had a few face pictures of bucks and does all at night, all muzzling my camera, but my daylight sightings dropped. I took out the camera on a whim that they were checking my scent on that camera. Within a week deer started showing in daylight again. No buck though, I followed the trails I described and set up 300 yards from the feed in the evening and on the last week of the season I got the buck that had been slipping me all year at 545 pm, almost completely dark outside. I no longer use cameras, because when you check them you leave scent, just like a scent wick, I think the story above is decent proof of this. If you can not see a defined trail, look at the trees, a lot of times where there are natural openings, deer will use that as a travel route. Don’t be afraid to feed and hunt the trails far away from the feed instead of the fed spot, this will work, just have patience. Good Luck.

A comment titled: tracking in response to a report titled: Opinion needed on gut shot deer

i wounded two deer bow hunting a few years ago. while tracking i jumped both deer two times a piece. after the second time jumping them, i made a circle around the deer and came stalking from another direction and walked up on both bedded with their heads facing the way i originally was tracking. i was able to shoot both at 15 steps with the bow to finish them off. if you wound a deer and jump it, make a circle and come from the other way stalking, they will still be concentrated on the way the original danger was from and you can move right up to them and finish them and you probably wouldn't have this dilema.

A comment titled: RAIN in response to a report titled: rain

I POSTED THIS LAST WEEK FOR ANOTHER HUNTER WHO NEEDED ADVICE WHEN THE BEST TIME TO HUNT WAS:

RAIN!!! IF YOU HUNT IN THE RAIN AND WAIT IT OUT YOU WILL GET RESULTS. AS LONG AS THE WIND IS NOT ABOVE 15 MPH THIS IS A GREAT TIME BECAUSE OTHER HUNTERS WILL NOT HUNT THE MISERABLE WEATHER. THINK OF IT THIS WAY, WOULD YOU STAY LAYING DOWN IN THE COLD AFTER SOMEONE JUST SPRAYED YOU WITH THE HOSE PIPE? THEY WON'T EITHER! IF YOU HUNT AND WAIT OUT THE MISERABLE WEATHER, YOU WILL GET GREAT RESULTS. I HAVE SEEN DEER EVERYTIME I HUNTED IN THE RAIN. IT ALSO ELIMINATES ALL SCENT FROM THE EQUATION, EVERYTHING IS IN YOUR FAVOR, NO PRESSURE, NO SCENT, AND DEER HAVE TO MOVE TO GET WARM. BUCKS ALSO FRESHEN SCRAPES AFTER RAIN BECAUSE THEIR SCENT IS WASHED OUT! TOUGH IT OUT AND YOU WILL SEE.

judging by that cutover pictured across the creek, here's what i would do. if you still have time, i would add a plot to the southwest corner of you property line 80 yards from the creek, 100 yards from the east corner of the cutover. this would create a funnel between the creek and the big section of your property, and the cutover. the deer should use this funnel you create as a staging area and travel route to enter that cutover, especially if it's thick and grown over, they will be there. the creek is a natural travel route, and though you may not have many pics or have seen many deer using it, they do all times of the day, like a highway. this extra plot would also create a pinch between your existing plot. , giving you an extra stand location further north in your property. if it's to late to add a plot, move the feeder to this spot i'm describing, face your stand 40 yards off creek facing the west. enter from the far east border, (winds should be predomitaely northwest in hunting season, letting you walk to your stand into the wind, blowing scent away from plot and cutover) this could be a great setup by using the creek, clear cut, and a possible plot, because deer flock to edges using the route you have enchanced. this will also create a good pinch which is the best thing for a bow hunter.

A comment titled: 35 whelen in response to a report titled: 35 Whelen

I'd like to say i hunt this state with all legal means provided to us by the ldwf. but to say that we are at a disadvantge by the 35 whelen not being considered primitive is absurd. last year i killed a good buck at 165 yards with a .444 and i don't consider that to be primitive, that's better than a football field and a half. all of these weapons mentioned are still centerfire calibers and are far more than advanced considering the limitations of a muzzleloader. will i still hunt with my 'primitive .444' yes because it is legal, but if i had a vote i'd vote to go back to the old muzzleloader seasson, because a .444 or 35 whelen can both take deer out to 300 yards if you know anything about bullet drop. i take deer with rifles, 'primitive' weapons, muzzloaders and bows and hunt all because they are legal. let's be realistic, spinning a topic like the 35 whelen in a primitive arms season is ridiculous, we are not at a disadvantage without it, remember we had a real muzzloader season long before 'primitive seasons'

get the .444 H&R rifle, its the same price as the 45-70. got one last year shot a 150 lb buck at 165yards knocked it back three yards with a half fist sized wound. sighted 2' high at 100, flat to 250 yards. the .444 is an easy 300 yard gun sighted high at 100 yards. look at the ballistic charts from Shooting Times and you will see the 45-70 is obscelete compared to the .444. half the recoil as well. no deer will run one step from 0-300 yds when this 265 grain bullet hits home.

A comment titled: HUNTING SEASONS in response to a report titled: Change The Deer Season

I CAN NOT SAY THAT I AGREE. I HUNT ALL SEASONS, WITH ALL METHODS AVAILABLE BECAUSE I LOVE TO DEER HUNT. I CAME UP GUN HUNTING BUT STARTED BOW HUNTING TWO SEASONS AGO TO EXTEND MY SEASON. I DON'T BELIEVE THAT BOW HUNTERS HAVE ANY ADVANTAGE JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN HUNT FROM OCT. 1 THROUGH JAN. 31 OR FEB. 15 DEPENDING ON THEIR AREA IN WHICH THEY HUNT, BECAUSE DEER HUNTING IN LOUISIANA IS TOUGH. BOWHUNTING INCREASES THE TOUGHNESS TEN TIMES. YOU MUST BE A BETTER SCOUT, HUNTER, AND SHOT IF YOU WISH TO HUNT WITH ONLY A BOW. I MAKE AN OUT OF STATE BOW HUNT EACH YEAR ON PUBLIC LAND, AND TRUST ME FROM EXPERIENCE HUNTING ONLY PUBLIC LAND HERE AND OUT OF STATE, THE DEER HERE ARE HARDER TO HUNT. OUT OF STATE IS NEARLY A JOKE COMPARED TO HERE. I DO AGREE WITH THE PRIMITIVE ARMS SEASON BEING A JOKE THOUGH, BECAUSE MY. 444 SHOOTS FIVE SHOT GROUPS AT 150 YDS WITH EACH BULLET TOUGHING, BUT IT'S LEGAL. GIVING EVERYONE THE SAME SEASONS WOULD DECREASE THE DEER HERD BY AT LEAST TEN PERCENT BECAUSE HUNTERS WOULD SHOOT MORE DEER WITH THE RIFLES BECAUSE IT'S EASIER THAN ANY OTHER METHOD. AND OUR TAGGING SYSTEM IS STILL ON THE HONOR SYSTEM, IF YOU AREN'T CHECKED BY LDWF, THEY NEVER KNOW IF YOU KILLED A DEER ANYWAY UNLESS YOU ARE AN ETHICAL HUNTER. NOT ENOUGH ENFORCEMENT ON THEIR END TO EVEN ATTEMPT AN ALL WEAPONS SEASON FROM OCTOBER TO THE END OF JANUARY. I HUNTED IN WEST VIRGINIA A FEW YEARS BACK AND THEIR TAGGING SYSTEM WAS GREAT. YOU HAD A PHYSICAL TAG, THEN YOU HAD TO REPORT TO A CERTIFIED CHECK STATION THAT WAS CERTIFIED THROUGH THEIR NATURAL RESOURCE DEPARTMENT. ONCE YOUR ANIMAL WAS CHECKED JUST LIKE MANDATORY CHECK DAYS AT OUR WMA'S YOU COULD ONLY BRING YOUR ANIMAL TO A PROCESSOR OR TAXIDERMIST IF YOU HAD YOUR TAG AND THE FORM FROM THE CHECK STATION. IF YOU WERE CAUGHT NOT FOLLOWING THE LAW, LOSS OF LICENSE FOR ONE SEASON AND A HEFTY FINE WAS THE RESULT. THAT IS THE WAY TO ENSURE THE LAW IS BEING FOLLOWED. MORE CHECKS ON THE HUNTERS PRODUCED MORE DEER FOR THE HUNTERS. I'M SURE MANY WOULD HATE THIS SYSTEM, BUT IT IS THE FAIREST I'VE EVER SEEN.
