Over the years of my hunting ventures, I've never been able to call specs. Ive tried numerous calls. Not one of them was I ever able to actually sound pretty half way like a true spec. Well fellas Ive found the call I've been looking for. A buddy of mine that calls comps told me about it, and I just figured that it would be the same-ole same-ole. I WAS WRONG. Riceland custom calls has done it. They have developed a call that sounds great and is extremely easy to break over. After only a few mins I was sounding like i've been trying to sound for years. I had pretty much given up on trying to call these suckers just because of the dozen and 1/2 calls in my gun cabnet. I'm more ready than ever now and practicing every day. They even have a coupple good training videos on you-tube to help you get started. A good tip to those starting out is for you to record yourself and listen to it. You can't really hear all of what you sound like while blowing. This will help you identify what you may be doing wrong and right...Good luck to ya.

The east boat launch has been closed since about September of last year and they have closed the west boat launch as of two weeks ago +/-. Only access to the refuge is at Rollover, or launching at the Mermentaw river outlet and taking the Gulf into the refuge. Price Lake road is open, but it is illegal to launch a boat off the side of the road. Good luck to all and be safe.

As hunting season begins numerous outdoorsman and women will hit our bodies of water in this great state. Some haven't fired up their boats since the season ended, and others are in them regularly. None the less, we all need to take a moment and caution ourselves to the dangers that cold weather , water, and our passions presents to us. Use the 'What if?' method to determine what you add to your supplies. A few simple items can be the difference between a bad experience and a horrible ending. You are always going to need the essentials that the state requires and I have attached a checklist to this post for those of you that may question a few things. I am here to see what others on the forum can add to insure that we all have a safe and bountiful hunting season. A few things that I like to carry are: a few trash bags (for my mess as well as a few others), a couple extra flashlights , extra batteries ( for all of our gadgets especially if you are relying on a GPS) , fully charged cell phone, Ziplocs, first aid kit (add a little extra to yours when you get it from the store because they don't ever seem to have enough band aids lol) 1-2 extra life jackets, extra paddle, and a change of clothes in a dry bag/box of some sort. These few Items can really be a lifesaver god forbid the Murphy's Law takes into effect. A few other practices that are commonly overlooked is letting someone know (that will notice you gone) an approximant location that you will be in. Check your boat's running lights BEFORE you put it in the water, as well as, your trailer lights before your trip. All these little preventative measures can make you and the others around you a little more safe doing the things we love, and most importantly bring you home to the ones you love. Thank you for your time and enjoy your hunting adventures throughout our state. Please wear your life Jacket

Starting to see specks showing up around Gueydan. The season is almost apon us. Start practicing your calling now if you haven't already. Cold weather early means warm gun barrols.Good day everyone!!!!

October 19, 2011 at 12:27pm

Specs are comming in strong in the Gueydan area. Several thousand aroung the property. Didn't think they were down seeing as i haven't heard any over head at the house. Time is creeping by.......

October 27, 2010 at 8:34pm

Finally got away from the work at the camp and took the kiddos crabbing. Didn't try to catch any reds as I was too occupied helping the kids catch crustations. Wound up with 10lbs of 30ct shrimp which took a good bit of effort to retrieve and a limit of crabs. Kids had a blast got full of mud then I took them to the gulf and let them clean off in the water. Great time. Can't wait for the tides to change and get the water moving earlier in the day. Water was looking good, but the kids were having too much fun to break away and get a few fish. Maby two weekends from now....

Well boys, took out the teal deeks yesturday after noon after running the dogs. Did a little prepin for September. Man I can't wait. It's like time is standing still. I know we only have about 16 weeks till teal season, but i'm doing everything i can to prevent the shakes from setting in lol. May the summer pass quickly and our marshes stay as oil free as possably.

May 19, 2010 at 10:13am

I was wondering if anyone here , filled with knoledge, had a map of ,or could point out which pass is which. I've been all over the wax , but haven't learned the names of the passes. (ie Pintail...) Any help would be appreciated. I have aerial maps and such but have come up blank on the names.

May 12, 2010 at 9:47am

I've never fished the pool before, But was wondering if there are signs telling you where you can and can't be? Are both launches open to fish out of?

April 29, 2010 at 12:01pm

Went to the blind this morning. Heard/saw tons of mallards & pintails They just had there mind set on the marsh south of me. Got a beautiful greenhead. Other than that it was two black ducks. Geese were flying just out of range, and i can't call worth a cr@p... Reguardless it was an other beautiful morning in the duck blind. Got to love it...

December 23, 2009 at 2:11pm

Hunted the front yesturday afternoon in Gueydan. Had a big push of new birds with it as well as the one behind it. Large flocks of Big ducks. comming from the north. @ 5:30+/- Countless flocks of geese clouded the skys. These were new birds just making it down here. They were not here Sunday. All comming in from the north. Blues , Snows ( They had a few down already, but not in these numbers) Specs ( Huge flocks not just a few 5-10s) and even heard a few Canadians (Lessers i'm sure That's all i've ever killed there.).Birds were working the calls and hitting the deeks (again something i didn't see other than opening day w/ teal) I saw not one teal all afternoon. Everything i saw were big ducks.

December 02, 2009 at 10:46am

3 yrs old. This is his second hunt. Last year he made a season ender with me. Opening day of teal season in Gueydan. Had him in my lay-out blind w/ 3 thermacells around him. Raining and all, he wanted to be out there. Can't say i blame him .

The boundrys of the SLO mapping website are pretty accurate. I hunt private and public lands, and am familiar with having tresspassers, as well as those who think it all belongs to them. If you have an area that you are intrested in hunting, but are not sure of contact the SLO with the exact location of the area in question ( I like to make a PDF file map with the track # in it to send to them) They will tell you yes you can hunt it or no or even sometimes maybe, but unless they say YES it is public accessable 100% then I wouldn't risk the confrontations. Now, after they say Yes they can e-mail you documentation on the property saying where/why/how the state obtained the property. For instance. There was a certain piece of property that bordered a hunting club that I was intrested in hunting. No state lands signs or anything other than that hunting clube posted signs. I contacted the SLO about it and they sent me documentation on it saying that it was donated by DOW back in 84' and that it was complete public access. Carried the map and documentation with me and when I was confronted, and the game wardens were called in the WLF said that I was in 100% compliance and that they needed to not mess with anyone on this track. So Just a map showing theat the state claimes it as nav waters is not enough. You need other forms of identification of the area in question that shows that you have public access to the area. A lot of the land has washed away due to costal erosion, and there are a lot of the properties under water now. Bottom line is that we as sportsman/woman need to know, understand, and respect the guidlines laid out for us to enjoy the sports that we care so deeply about. Otherwise, we will put ourselves out of a hobby.

Any natural waterway is navigagle waters. You can't look at our marshes and swamps like they are now, but as they were 1800 early 1900s. Any man-made canal accessing private lands can be classified as private waterways. Any of the old (some aren't even there anymone) sleus and waterways are natural waterways as well as their natural banks at normal water level. Bottom line it's pretty crappy either way you look at it. Go to the state lands website and under state lands and waterbottoms, agree to the terms and bring up the map. in your Key on the Left hand side of the page click state waters. All state waterways and bottoms will be highlighten in one of three colors. find the area you are looking to fish and PDF a copy of the map. E-mail this to one of the folks at the SLO and ask them if it is nav waters and you can fish it or not. Then they will e-mail you back a response. Carry a copy or the mapped area and the response from the SLO with you and if approached present it to said person in a POLITE manner. If WLF or Sherrif's office is brought into it then present it to them in a POLITE manner. At this point the officer/Agent will question it, but can't lagitamently citate nor remove you from the area. Key is POLITE attitude even when faced with some unruley people. Us as fishermen/women need to keep our act together and stay in good standings because there are way too many people that don't want us to hunt/fish at all much less on certain pieces of property.
Good day.

The East side will open in May. They are just starting the construction on the West side. Only other option is to launch at Rollover and fish or launch at Mermentaw river and take the gulf to JH. Rollover does have good fishing/crabbing throughout the year just not as much area is room. You can go into the gulf and come back up into the marsh at several spots to gain entry to Rock. The mermentaw river also provides plenty of fish also.

Good point E. A way to build a fire can be key in some situations. I have also personally seen several people get lost in the woods and wind up 5-6 MILES from where they were suppost to be. If in the woods, a compass and a deck of cards can get you out. I was always taught that if you realise you are lost sit down and play a hand of cards. This will give your brain time to process your location. Using sounds, sunlight, and a little destressing you usually catch your head in a few mins.

A comment titled: sucks in response to a report titled: stearing arm frozen

I've had a rash of these this year. If it is too bad you are going to have to sacrafice the steering cable or even both the steering cable and the tilt tube. Try beating it loose with the 2x4 first , but watch because if the Stainless steel turning arm that connects to your motor is not it the hole you will damage the eye. It if doesn't come free, i'de take the tilt tube off the engine mounting bracket and put it in a vice where you can work on it. Last but not least you can cut the end off the steering cable and find a rod that fits into the tilt tube and commence to wailing on it. You'll lose the steering cable but more than likely get the tilt tube. after removing the old steering cable end pass a file inside, then grease so it dowsn't happen again. You can purchase a greasable wiping nut that takes the place of the plastic factory wiper and grease regularly. A little bit of prevention can cure a lot of headache

Spent a few days down there last week ( Had to come back home do to UL grad Sat.) You can use nets for crabs, not traps. Fishing was slow Wed - Fri. Shrimp started running. I was able to come home w/ 13 reds , 9 specs, and 30lbs of shrimp. Not complaining what so ever.

A comment titled: gun shy in response to a report titled: Gun Shy Lab - How to Train?

start with beating a pan around when it's feeding time. I know that a lot of people can't just start shooting at the house, so start with a cheap pan that will be loud when you hit it with something. They will get used to the noise. Then progress to a 22 . If you do live in the city take him to the field and fire a few rounds while he is kenneled, but away from him. 'like posted earlier a dummy launcher that uses blanks is a great tool. 'It will take a little while, but it is actually not a hard thing to break.
