With low expectations, due to the severe record setting heat, I bow hunted the Atchafalaya Delta WMA on opening day, just like I have for the past 34 years. Right after daylight, I distinctly heard a deer coming in from the marsh. As it came into sight about 125 yds to my left, I began to video it with my bow mounted Tactacam camera. It was a medium sized doe heading for the cover of the nearby myrtles. As it came into shooting range, it appeared like it was heading straight into the thicket not allowing me a shot. Instead it angled towards me and came around the back of the tree that my ladder was attached to. Still I was not going to get a shot even though it was at 20 yards because of the cover it was in. Suddenly it stopped in a gap between trees to browse on a bush and I had my chance. I had to slowly raise by bow directly over my head and pivot to my right, to bring the bow on the correct side of the tree for the shot. At that moment, with me standing like a statue with my bow pointed at the sky, the doe looked up at me. I froze and thought it was all over. But after a few seconds, she went back to eating and I eased the bow down around the tree and slowly drew back. Release, flashing streak of green light as my arrow blew through and into a tree. The doe instantly bolted out of sight, but not far. I heard a few steps and then silence. Celebration! Deer number one of this season was down only 30 yards from the shot. It was a very nice way to start the season. Good luck to everyone. God bless and be safe!

Tried my hand at hanging some tree lines in the Atchafalaya River last spring. Had a blast catching some really nice cats up to fifty pounds. Many were in the 20 lb plus range. I can't wait to try them again in a few months. As usual, my partner was my grandson Baylor Allen.

David Simoneaux caught this huge catfish on a tree line last week. It bottomed out a 50 lb scale, so we did not get an accurate weight.

The large population of hogs on the Atchafalaya Delta WMA is very evident. Seeing hogs and hog sign on the peripheral islands has been common for a long time, but in the past few years they are really taking hold on Big Island. On a recent scouting trip I watched this big hog rooting at 10:30 am. You can see the damage being done as they root around. That said I have yet to take a hog on Big Island. I have taken many on the smaller islands. Maybe this will be the season to get my first one there.

I made my second scouting trip to the Atchafalaya Delta WMA this morning. Watched a beautiful sunrise on the way down the river. As expected the vegetation has overtaken most of last season's trails. Quite a bit of work to move around right now. The game wardens were out cutting the main lanes as usual for this time of year. I plan several more trips down the river before shutting it down in advance of October 1st.

The LDWF recently completed construction of a new wharf for the cul-de-sac on Big Island. This was sorely needed as the pre existing wharf was often full and guys had to park on the bank where they could, which is quite difficult when the water lilies move in.

We have caught over 330 catfish on our last 8 trips to the Atchafalaya River. My wife Ana, daughter Brooke Allen and her husband Sam and grandkids Ava, Baylor, Reese, Emersyn and Tuesday all have contributed. I mainly play the parts of chief deckhand, bait changer and photographer. Haha! Lots of fun for all.

This past spring I was fishing down at the Atchafalaya Delta WMA. I caught a few normal size catfish in an area where we sometimes also catch red fish and back drum. Suddenly I had a hard bite and when I set the hook, I knew that I had something really big on. I immediately thought bull red or bull black drum. I had 17 lb test mono, so I did not want to try to horse the fish in any way. When it would run, I would loosen the drag a little and it went on like that for a little while. As it tired, I was able to get it closer to the boat. I got a glimpse of the huge head and then it ran off again. Now I really wanted to get that big thing in, knowing it would be a personal best. I had brought my gaffe along just in a case I hooked up a bull red and now it was time to put it to use. I eased him up along side the boat in gaffe range and it was over. It was a huge catfish that filled up my ice chest. He weighed 18 lbs. To that point, the biggest catfish that I had ever caught on a rod and reel was 13 lbs and that also was at the Delta. My next biggest was maybe 5 lbs. So this one was special.

With the recent catfish bite on fire, I took my wife Ana, daughter Brooke Allen and granddaughters Ava, Reese and Emersyn Allen for a quick afternoon fishing trip. Within the first five minutes they caught 6 fish and it was on! These girls knew what they were doing pulling in one cat after another. The one deck hand onboard (Me!) had a busy afternoon removing fish, baiting hooks, rinse, repeat! Haha! It really was a fun trip with the girls who brought home a nice bunch of fillets for the freezer.

My buddy David Simoneaux took me and my 8 year old grandson Baylor Allen frogging recently. I was amazed at how well Baylor was able to grab those big bull frogs. With his small hands he did miss a few, but that only made him more determined. No matter how big, fat and fast they were, Baylor was even faster. We had blast. I caught a bunch and even though David was expertly navigating us with his Pro Drive, he jumped out to get few that tried to escape on the bank. If you have never tried frogging, you really should at least once, as it is quite an experience. Gar fish, snakes and alligators everywhere!

These monster catfish were caught on bush lines put out by my good buddy David Simoneaux. I helped out on the larger one. For size perspective I held him up next to my granddaughters Reese and Emersyn.

My buddy Nelson Dupre's grandson, Brendon Bourg shot his first buck this year on a hunt in north Texas. Nelson told that 'Brandon and his grandma Hazel Dupre were sitting in a box stand looking over a wheat field. Around 4:00 the deer started coming out. There were deer everywhere on the field. There were a couple of good bucks out and then this big 9 point steps out across the field. His grandma told him this was the one. They waited until it walked closer and he shot. The deer never left the field. It ran about 20 yards and fell. He made a great shot.'

Nelson Dupre was using artificial bait fishing for specs, when he hooked up with this monster bull red. That was his first fish of the day.

This dude looks like he has some bad intentions...Haha! He showed up several days in the past week on one of my game cams.

My grandson Baylor Allen caught his first few bass recently near Lafayette. Using a beetle spin and other baits, he caught a few bass and a ton of big perch. I believe his smile says it all!

November 21, 2017 at 7:29pm

My cousin Travis and his daughter Leigh shot this big boar and a cow horned spike in Texas on their lease.

Yes I do. Many years ago I watched a fishing report with Frank Davis on WWL TV. He said most people throw those back and that they were actually very good fried or grilled. I tried them and have been keeping them ever since. I have served them mixed in with the regular channel cats at my house for years and have had nary a complaint. But give them a try yourself and see what you think.

Yeah I tried to Enbed the video so you guys could see it without having to go to the link, but I was not successful.

As to the Vegan guy, he definitely wanted to provoke the fishermen to further his cause. If they would have tossed him over the rail, of course they would have been arrested and he would have won. so kudos to them for not 'taking the bait'. When the guy threw that fish back in the water, I am not sure how I would have reacted. Probably not in a way that would have been appropriate for my family to view, I am sure!

Coubie, we threw back the 2 cats in the last pic, but Baylor wanted a photo, since it was his first ever double catch. He thought that was pretty cool! Haha!

Jed, we are catching a few in the Atchafalaya River between Candy Fleet and the Mr. Charlie rig. Also at Fool's Point 5 minutes from the Berwick boat landing. Nothing great, but enough to eat or put some in the freezer. River shrimp is the bait.

Thanks for that demonstration. I will definitely try that technique out on my next hog. Seems much quicker than the way we do it now.

Sow I agree they are out of control, but in my opinion they are putting the cart before the horse. Is it worth the risk of possibly getting even one person sick from this stuff? Or having other animals die while experimenting with the poison? Not to me. Of course I am a hog hunter, anyone that has read any of my reports well knows this. I also only hunt on public land so I do not own any land that hogs could invade. However my bias does not cloud my thinking. Putting a poison into our woods that is not one hundred per cent safe for other animals and us is not acceptable to me. We will have to agree to disagree on this matter.
