New To Sportsman Network?

What is this world coming to? Seriously how low down of a person does it take to steal someone's trailer hitch? It's not like they cost $1000. Granted mine was a nice adjustable two ball hitch for $200. If you are the culprit, beware. Karma is a killer. What happened to sportsmen being sportsmen??

Just heard through the grapevine that Capt Josh Howard and the Looney Tuna were in an accident today. Hit a well outside southwest pass and sunk in minutes. Not confirmed yet but I hope everyone is ok.

Anybody been hunting around Bayou Black/Orange Grove lately? Would like to hear how everyone else is doing since the split. Seems to have slowed down for us. Still VERY FEW big ducks...

December 30, 2010 at 3:06pm

Bayou Black roundup of 12 ringys to close out an excellent first split. Its 95% ringys but ill take them over nothing. Fast action and easy limits. Nothing better! They are really starting to raft up and make our place home. Had great company and hope to continue after the split. Lets hear about all you other Bayou Black guys!

December 05, 2010 at 1:54pm

Got two limits this morning. All ringnecks. Not a whole lot flying around. It was fast and furios early but come 6:30 they stopped. Didnt see very many other ducks or species. WE NEED A REAL FRONT!!

November 21, 2010 at 1:14pm

Easy limit this morning in Orange Grove. Done by 6:15. 3 woodys, 1 ringy, 2 teal. Saw a few grays and mallards. Couldnt quite get them in. Talked to couple other people who came out with 6 mallards. Ducks are everwhere. Heard a lot of shooting around the area. Try to get back at it in the morning...good luck guys

Well with duck season opening in a few days, I have to ask the inevitable question. What kind of calls are you guys using these days? I hunt the open water marsh, so a good loud call is a MUST on those high wind days! What do you guys think is the best call for this? Is a $100+ call REALLY worth the money? Can a cheap call actually work those late season south louisiana skiddish ducks?

November 11, 2010 at 6:29pm

Anybody hunt teal around Bayou Black this weekend? I havent heard anything about it.

September 13, 2010 at 4:32pm

My dad is looking into getting a vacuum sealer for fish and shrimp. We have one for our deer meat and such. Now we are looking into getting a vacuum that seals a bag full of liquid, so we can store shrimp and other things that require water. Curious to see what you guys are using or have heard about. Brands? Model? Thanks for any help!

I am having problems with bullet expansion. I have 7mmWSM and I'm currently shooting winchester 150gr. power points because they are the only thing i have found to get a DESCENT group. I have also tried the fusion bullets but could not get them to group AT ALL. I am still not satisfied with the Winchesters as the two deer I have shot with it both ran off. Perfect shot placement both times at about 100-150yds. When I recover the deer the exit hole and entry hole are practically the same thing, which means to me that the bullet did not expand properly. Any possible solutions? Any of you guys that shoot a 7mmWSM have bullet trouble? What is the best bullet that I can use (I'm thinking maybe a heavier bullet will help to control the group and slow it down to expand. These are the only two bullets I have found at stores (limited shopping) ANY help would be greatly appreciated as I am tired of tracking deer already.

I was looking at the shallow water spider and they seem very interesting. I was wondering if any of you guys or gals out there have any real life experience with them. They seem to do pretty good in the ad video on their website.

Finally some good news. Watching the race and Fox8 just interrupted saying that as the meeting broke at BP headquarters in Houston, it was released that there is oil flowing through the collector pipe into the tanker. They do not know how much oil is actually flowing through the pipe but there is reports of it actually working.

Hopefully this will alloww us to contain a majority of the surface oil while drilling the new relief well. This is awesome news. Finally something positive. Let's hope its TRUE!

Anybody been catching any sacs in bayou black/orange grove area?? Probably still a little cold but now that duck seasons over im getting that itch!

January 26, 2010 at 8:55pm

Made my first trip to my property in orange grove in about two weeks and it definatly paid off! Got my first limit of the season. Ended with four ringnecks and a pair of teal. First thing this morning I lost a big male pintail. That would have been my first ever pintail! I could have cried.. Lots of big ducks. Had greys commited but flared at last second. Then for the first time in my life I saw a flock of about twenty pintail commit to my spread but never got quite loww enough. These are the first pintail I see on my property in probably four years. And to have them all commit, I was in SHOCK. Saw a couple flocks of geese overhead but never once again never got quite low enough. Goin get em again in the morning. Hopefully those pins come back and those geese get lower!

Just wondering how the ducks have been in orange grove, bayou black area. Ive had bronchitis since Christmas day. Just hoping it has gotten better since the last timei was out there.

Any info would be a great help! Thanks

December 30, 2009 at 6:01pm

Made another orange grove hunt this morning. Still sucks badly. Between two of us we only ended with four. Many of you say the ducks are down but i still say no they are not. Not even close. When you takea look up HIGH in the sky theres still NOTHING but clouds. No ducks coming in. BYFAR my worst season ever. Even if we do get tons of birds later in the season it still will not make up for this part.

December 23, 2009 at 12:55pm

Made the first hunt of the second split in orange grove after spending the weekend in Mississippi killing some deer. Took my dad in the marsh for his first hunt this year. We only ended with 6 ringnecks. Lost three cripples. Probably should have had our limit. Still not really different than first split. Couple new birds but nothing drasticallly different. Hope it gets better. Still no big ducks in nose bleed section migrating in.

The dispute is between Bob's and Williams (the oil and gas company). This is the same dispute that almost shut them down in 2019. But they agreed to a new lease. The land in question is the canal connecting the marina to the Shell Canal.

^^^Fake news. Nothing in WLF pamphlet says its illegal. Nor can you find a WLF agent who will definitively say its illegal. Call the headquarters yourself.

Dredger, where were yall south of the lake? I was in a lease for a couple years with a buddy on the southwest side of of dog lake. Got tired of the ride and fighting the super low tides and got out of it before last season. I regretted it all year as the tides finally switched being high in the mornings and never seemed to get super low where we were hunting on the north side of Sister Lake.

What area of dularge you in? I've made a couple trips in the Dularge/Dulac area with limited success. Along with everyone I know.

A comment titled: Re: Where is the 9 mile line anyway??? in response to a report titled: Where is the 9 mile line anyway???

I completely agree with you about WLF Captain not being able to advise on where to get the coordinates. If they are going to enforce a line, there should be a simple source for the public to obtain its coordinates. And I am well aware of last year's Coast Guard enforcement of the 3 mile line. I have heard of several cases being thrown out in court, hopefully they all do. Unfortunately the 9 mile line is only temporary. It expires September 30th. However, Congressman Garrett Graves introduced a bill in the House that would permanently recognize Louisiana state waters out to 9 nautical miles. Hopefully it passes, and hopefully the states get control of the snapper fishery sooner rather than later.

Greendhead, that is false. For the current Fiscal Year (ending Sept 30,2016), the Louisiana State waters have been extended to 9 miles from the coastline. A fisherman stopped by Federal authorities inside of 9 miles will NOT be ticketed for possession of red snapper. This is all confusing enough, please do not spread false information. Please refer to the latest press release regarding this information. http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/news/39802

Capt. Marty, I believe chbaker's suggestion is the best method to get the line into your GPS.

A comment titled: Re: What in the PAC is that?! in response to a report titled: What in the PAC is that?!

I'm 100% positive that is NOT a Spanish.

I'm 95% positive that IS a juvenile cuda. The dorsal, caudal, and anal fins all greatly resemble that of a cuda. It is fairly common for juvenile barracuda to venture inshore, however they usually stay closer to the coastline and in very clear waters. In fact several were seen at docks on the back side of Grand Isle recently and one was caught in Fourchon this weeekend.

So while PAC doesn't sound like the most likely place, it is entirely plausible that is in fact a juvenile cuda. Great catch.

A comment titled: Re: Proposed East Zone Boundary Change in response to a report titled: Proposed East Zone Boundary Change

Larry, as a Terrebonne Parish hunter on both sides of the Houma Nav, I strongly support using it as a zone boundary. But if the boundary will be the Atchafalaya River, then I would prefer to stay in the Coastal, whereas the opener would be the 2nd weekend of November.

Terrebonne Parish is tricky with hunting dates. The Bayou Black area, i.e. freshwater area, is greatly inhabited by divers, which usually move into large rafts in areas of no pressure later in the season. Therefore, most of these birds are killed from the opener until about Christmas time.

Whereas in the Lower Dularge/Dulac/Chauvin area, i.e. brackish area, is greatly inhabited by Gadwall, which usually move into those areas as the season goes on to escape the great pressure from the northern areas. Therefore the greatest majority of these birds are killed from Thanksgiving until the closing.

I think the opener on the 2nd weekend of November is a good happy medium.

I breast almost every single duck I kill. And I kill my 6 every Saturday and every Sunday. I don't feel bad one bit. All I kill is ringnecks and teal and there ain't enough meat on all 12 legs to equal one breast. I do pluck a limit or two whole. And you know what, my hunting partners breast them all too. Hundreds of ducks each year, floating down the canal with no breasts and no remorse.

Have fun and Happy plucking :)

It means we are further limited to our catch share of the total quota. As I understand it, the recreational sector is split into private (guys like you and me) and for-hire (charter guys with federal permit I believe). We will pretty much have like a week to fish, if that...

I dont doubt your abilities capt. But if I am reading correctly your boats want to catch 10,000 fish on 23 trips in 7 days? Correct me if im wrong but that sounds absurd to think you can catch 435 fish per trip......That would require 18 people per trip.

Please tell me im missing something!

A comment titled: shark in response to a report titled: Jug line surprise

Not to dispute anyones opinion, but this looks to be a blacktip, not only because of the fins but couple other features as well. I will admit that I may be wrong as we can not see the entire body for the telltale markings. Blacktip reef sharks are also known to venture into freshwater environments but are not nearly as tolerable as bulls.

Were u using live bait or cut? Appreciate any info.

I also have a 7short mag and I shoot the 160gr federal triple shock x. I have yet to have a problem with them. It is very possible that the bullet did explode without make an immediately lethal wound. I'm sure the deer eventually bled out but tracking long distances in the swamp can be nearly impossible. I have not had much success with ballistic tips in the past but have not shot them out of the 7
