Made a week long trip to Lake Claiborne the week of 3/10 - 3/19... First part of the week was cold and the bite was slow.... Tried yo-yo's and did some bass fishing... Bite was not to good on the yo-yo's... Went to trolling about mid week for strippers and caught a total of 45... Of course it took the four of us 4 days to do it... Fish were in 45' of water early in the mornings and up to around 12-16 feet in the early afternoon... Caught them on white and gold crank baits while trolling about 2.5 - 3.5 mph @ 12 - 15 feet... Bad cut on a couple of fingers with the filet knife shut down the fishing trip...

Thinking of taking a day of vacation time and try to catch some Spec's and Red's out of Cypremort Point... Any suggestions on where and what bait to fish with would be appreciated... I don't want to waste my time and a day's vacation if the opportunity is not worth it... Thanks in advance for the feedback...

I AM LEAVING TO GO TO LAKE CLAIBORNE ON FRIDAY 9-3-10 TO FISH FOR THE WEEKEND.... I AM LOOKING FOR ANYTHING THAT IS BITING.... CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME A RUNDOWN ON WHAT THE FISH ARE DOING ON THE LAKE AT THIS TIME... I UNDERSTAND THAT THE LAKE IS A LITTLE LOWER THAN NORMAL AT THIS TIME... ANY REPORTS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED AS I AM DRIVING ABOUT 250 MILES TO GO FISHING... THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR THE REPORTS...

I am planning a fishing trip to Big Lake on Saturday... I have never been but I understand that it can be a great lake to fish from looking at all of the repoerts... I am hoping that with the fair weather we have had this week and the rising temperatures things will improve at Big Lake and I can have a good trip... I plan on fishing reds, specks, and flounder... I am coming from New iberia and I really don't want to waste a lot of gas and time... I have a friend that fishes there quiet often but he will not be around because he is getting ready for thee Oilmans Bass Tournement on Toledo Bend... The question is "Do the guy's that fish on Big Lake feel that this will be a descent weekend to fish it... I'm not asking where to go but "If it were you would you take the time to make that kind of trip this weekend??".. Thanks in advance guy's for the feedback to these questions....

Well, I finally got out.... Fished jugs for catfish on Thursday @ Lake Dautrieve near Bayou Benoit Landing... 29 cats on Thursday (see photo's) and went back on Friday and picked up 20 more... I went again on Saturday but the wind really beat me up.... Caught 7 and called it quits with the jugs... Broke out the rod and reel and fished a couple of hours for bass... Lost a nice on on a blue and black jig with a black crawdad with red flake claws... Shut it down and went to look at some christmas trees with my Humminbird 997 c si (side imaging unit)... I dropped the trees about 9 or 10 years ago and they are still there... While looking for my trees I think I also found a sunken boat... Tell me what you think it is... Someone said that they heard that side imaging don't work well in shallow water... Seems to work for me in a couple of feet.. Good fishing guy's...

Just wanted to share a photo taken with my HB 997c si sideimaging unit of the buoys around the swimming area at the state park on Vermillion Bay... Be glad when the weather and water changes...

This was not a bad hunt with a 2 1/2 year old buck scoring 119 and a 4 1/2 year old buck scoring 130...

December 08, 2009 at 10:00am

Anyone having a fishing report for the Vermillion Bay Area needs to post it asap... Lookin' like a bad time to go this week with the wind, high pressure, muddy water, cold temps, etc... I cancelled a whole weeks vacation because of the weather forecast but I would still like to make a couple of day trips if the bite is on in the Vermillion Bay Area... Thanks in advance for the info and good luck to all who do go...

Tryin' to find out where to catch a few bass in the Atchafalaya Basin.. Haven't fished it in several years and was looking to get out there Saturday 9-19-09... Maybe a tip on what they may be hitting on as well... Plan of launching either at Bayou Benoit Landing or Sandy Cove Landing on the west side of the Basin... Getting into the backwoods would probably be out of the question in my 19' Bay Boat because I understand the River at Butte Larose is currently at 4.7 feet... Thanks in advance for the feedback...

A comment titled: Reds and such..... in response to a report titled: Fishing in Big Lake

Thanks guy's for the feedback... Any more feedback from others would be helpful.... Tips on picking up a few Flounder would help too.... I want to make the MOST of my trip tommorrow because my freezer is down to hardly no fish at all and that's not good... Fishing by yourself on a four hour drive makes you want to bring in as many species as possible too... Again, thanks for the feedback... I'll check this again tonight before I call it a day for any new updates...

A comment titled: Yo Yo ??? in response to a report titled: YO-YO Fishin

Hook directly to the swivel... A yo-yo is not made to fish "on the bottom"... If your using shiners as bait keep this in mind... If the wind is blowing, keep the shiner down below the surface of the water... If there is no wind and the water is very calm, try to set the shiner where the hook is in the water and the top of the swivel is right at the surface of the water... Everytime the shiner moves there will be movement on the surface of the water either from the shiner or from the swivel... This movement on the surface will attact fish... This is a deadly tactic with yo yo's... I have fished them for about 43 years and if the fish are going to bite at all you'll fill your stringer... Don't take my word for it just set half of your y0-yo's one way and the other half 4" - 12" below the surface... You be the judge... Good luck... Oh, Just keep in mind that depending on where you fish there are different rules and regulations regarding yo-yo's... Not all lakes have the same regulations...

A comment titled: Bay Boat ??? in response to a report titled: BASS BOAT OR BAY BOAT??

OK Thunder you asked for it... I went from a bass boat to a Bay Boat... I don't regret it... My boat is a Nautic Star 1900 Nautic Bay... I use it for all types of fishing... Bream, Bass, Catfish (on jugs), and everything in the Vermillion Bay out to Southwest Pass... Keep in mind it's only a 19 footer so when you talk about fishing in the bay, weather is a key consideration... Storage is no problem in my bay boat... I have every piece of fishing tackle I own inside the boat... I have added tackle storage compartments on each side of my console and one in the front of the console right underneath the backrest for the seat over the baitwell... These boxes hold all my sac-a-lait tubes and heads along with all hooks, no matter what type with a complete line of corks for all fishing and any lead weight you would want or need... I added storage compartments under left rear seat and a shelf also that holds two fishing line boxes and two spinner bait boxes... I also added a storage shelf under the right rear seat that holds my cast net box and a dry storage box for miscellaneous tackle and equipment... Underneath the console is a dry storage box for my tools, another for my VHF hand held radios, all vessel paperwork and paper charts and maps, flares, etc. I also have four other storage boxes that hold a lot of other miscellaneous items (sunscreen, toilet paper, clorox, etc)... I also have a complete first aid kit as well... I also built a tackle storage box that fits between the rear livewell and the ice chest seat that holds 11 tackle trays containing a majority of my bass baits, topwater, diving and rattle traps as well as a complete assortment of flies for fly fishing... That does not include the tackle storage under the front deck which is all of the worms, grubs, frogs, craws, lizards, etc. as well as the soft plastics for speckled trout and reds... Also under the front deck is all of my life jackets, rain gear, extra changing of clothes, and pedestals for my pedestal seats... As far as a bay boat needing clearance for storage, I purchased mine with a removable windshield and a stainless rail that the the top half can me removed with two allen screws... I also carry a porta potty on the right side of my ice chest seate for my better half... I fish jugs for catfish quiet a bit and I built a storage box for my 120 wire leaders for my jugs which fits into the rod racks on the right side of my console... I carry my playmate loaded with shrimp and catfish bait on the left side of my ice chest seat... I am able to carry 60 - 80 jugs in the boat wioth no problem but if need be I can out a PVC rack in my rear rod holders and carry up to 150 or 160 jugs without them being in the way... If I leave out the PVC rack carry 60 - 80 jugs and still load 10 fishing rods in the boat for a days fishing... Well, you asked for ideas and I just shared with you all of the ones I have on my boat... They're not in the dream stage either, they're in the completed stage... Of course, right now I'm working on being able to bass fish and have 3 - 4 rods set up and ready to use and be at arms reach while fishing the front deck... I'll have that project finished by the end of this week... Good fishing guy's... Till later..

A comment titled: Revo's..... in response to a report titled: Revo

I have (3) ABU Garcia Revo "Inshore" models... My reasoning behind the inshore was 1) a stronger drag system and 2) it is the saltwater series... It has one less feature than the STX models which is a drag adjustment... It's a bit more expensive than the STX models though but because I fish both saltwater and freshwater it covers both areas... As an old phrase goes "I wouldn't take a gold monkey for my reels"... Good luck on you decision and good fishing...

A comment titled: Shallow Water Side Imaging... in response to a report titled: Cypremort Point State Park

I'm going fishing this weekend... Probably Thursday - Saturday... I'll take some snapshots on my sideimaging unit in 2', 3' and 4' of water... Then you can be the judge of what you see... Just so you know, last spring I set a can for spawning catfish in 2' of water below a cypress tree... It had 20' of 5/8" nylon rope connected to the canand I had it stretched out along the edge of the bank away from the can... After setting the can I passed by about 40' away from the tree and can in 5' of water... I can tell you this... With the can 40' off to the left-hand side of my boat and my boat moving @ 3.5 mph I could clearly see the can, rope and tree trunk on the screen... Now, that is the truth and the fact... I have also fished grass beds in 2' - 3' of water and been able to see the openings in the grass... Well, good fishing and I'll post some shots on Friday / Saturday...

A comment titled: 1900 Nautic Star in response to a report titled: can anyone help?

I just bought a Nautic Star last year... It is a 1900 Nautic Bay... I had a couple of problems when I first got the boat but they were ironed out pretty quick... The self bailing system leaked because it was no properly sealed from the factory... Dealer foud the problem and took care of it right away... The 1900 has the same console as the 2200 and I love it... I had a tackle compartment added on each side of the console and one in the front of the console... I was able to set it up this way because the shift is in the center of the console and not off to one side... I also added two tackle compartments under the left rear seat... Needless to say I have every stick of fishing tackle I own in my boat... Tackle boxes are a thing of the past... It has a good ride as well and with 60 gallons of fuel it'll run for a while... The 150 HP Yamaha Four Stroke does a good job on getting it down the bayou... If I was going to purchase again I would have no problem going the same route as I did this time... I fish fresh water as well as salt water... Good luck on your decision... I don't regret mine...

A comment titled: Todays Report on Spanish Lake... in response to a report titled: Spanish Lake INFO

I went by the lake yesterday (Thursday) and no one was there to talk to... I stopped back in this morning on the way to work.... I was told that the catfish were biting but they had no reports from anyone about what the other species of fish were doing... Not looking go on the weather for Saturday (90% chance of rain)... If you go good luck and put in a post on your results... If I hear of anything else I'll let you know...

A comment titled: Good Luck in response to a report titled: Spanish Lake INFO

Been to spanish lake on several occassions... Never had much luck... I understand that on the back side of the lake where the overflow is for the lake they do catch sacalait there... Just can't prove it by me... With all the rain, cold weather and high pressure systems we been having in the area this year I just been sitting it out... Let me know if you do any good when you go... I work real close to the lake so I will run by the lake at lunch today and ask if anyone has been catching... I will follow up with another post this afternoon and let you know what I find out...

A comment titled: Bass Boat ??? in response to a report titled: Skeeter, Ranger, Nitro or Triton

Why a bass boat.... I decided on a small bay boat instead and do not regret it at all.. More room to move around in, canopy for sunny days, very good ride, works well in shallow water... Oh, and I have evry piece of fishing tackle I own in the boat... And that's a LOT..... I've fished bayous, bays and lakes... Just a matter of what a guy wants out of his boat... Good luck on your decision...

A comment titled: 788ci in response to a report titled: Hummingbird 788ci

I have a 997c si NVB on the console of my bay boat and a 917c NVB on the bow next to the trolling motor... They are linked together... The 788ci was not out when I got my birds so I can't help there... I do know the larger screen on the 900 series units are a lot easier on the eyes than the 700 series... More money from jump street I think worth the extra... The sideimaging sonar sure opens up a new world when looking at the bottom of a lake or bayou... Good luck on your selection of units and good fishing... I wouldn't take a gold monkey for my set up but would trade the 917c for an 1197 with the 10.5" screen... If you would like to see a snapshot of the buoys at the swimming area of cypremort point state park on sideimaging let me know... It will give you a very good understanding of what you can see BELOW the water... Just send me you e-mail address...

A comment titled: Revo Reels... in response to a report titled: Revo SX

I was going to get the Revo SX Reels also to fish for reds and specs... I have fished with Ambassador reels for years but not the new low profile high speed reels... I decided on the Revo Inshore model which is the saltwater model... I was so impressed with it that I purchased a second one as a backup... Well, needless to say I just got my third reel in this week... Now I have two exact combos with 12# test line to fish with and my third reel set up on a flippion' stick with 17# test line... I fish both fresh and salt water... I wouldn't ake a gold monkey for my Revo's..

A comment titled: Lake Fausse Point State Park in response to a report titled: looking for Lake Fausse info

I haven't been to the lake in a few weeks but with all of the rain we have been having the water is probably high and a chocolate color... In the past I usually did good fishing jugs for catfish and using shrimp or cut bait... I will check with a few of my friends and see what they have been doing and update the post next week... If I can get away this weekend I may give it a try and see what I can to as well.. I will be more than happy to send you information on where to fish and what they are catching them on once I find out...

A comment titled: On the ground... in response to a report titled: hunting

I've killed many deer out of deerstands that sat on the ground... And guess what... You don't have to worry about slipping and hurting yourself while trying to get inside it... The one thing I would do though is set it up where it is sealed up to keep crawling critters out of it... Nothing like getting in one before daylight and find out that it's also occupied by a legless creature that was trying to get out of the weather... Good luck, and good hunting...
