Plenty of reds swimming around the duck ponds out in Port Sulphur, they loved the Shrimp Creole Matrix Shad. Big thanks to my good friend Captain Vinny for putting us on some nice ones.

Wondering if anyone has done any fly casting for reds in the Biloxi marsh area in recent history, if so, was it to any avail? Relatively new to saltwater fly fishing so if anyone could offer up advice on whether cold vs warm water is optimal (hoping to sight cast in between some duck hunts), and what type if flies the reds in our area seem to like best. Any tips/info/general talk would be appreciated! Thanks and as always, God Bless America.

Quick question, can anybody tell me how long the boat ride is from sweetwater out to black bay? Havn't fished out there since i was a kid but i want to get back into that action. Oh and im pushing a luxrious 16 foot flat with a 25 merc on it haha so if thats not enough 'oomph' to get out there can someone recommend an area within a reasonable vicinity of the launch that holds some decent fish? Thanks yall and God bless.

Hey all, im a new student here at LSU and in moving here i am in search of a new place to scratch my outdoors itch. I have hunted the pearl river since youth and im just looking for any and all information on the sherburne area. Is it walkable or should i bring up my flat? any areas to walk and wade duck hunt? I'm also yet to shoot a public land deer, are the deer any more populous here than they are down in my neck of the woods? 1-10 scale ratings of this management area would be cool, cant wait to get out there and check it out for myself!

Hey yall, long story short, i want to thank God im back in action following my recent catastrophe. dont ask how, it was a miracle provided by my grandma lol. So, next on the list of improvements: I was thinking about putting a stereo in my rig (if you can call it that lol) is it possible to put a very simple stereo setup on a simple lil flat boat?? anyone know how? or have a page that i can check out which will help me. Thanks. By the way, i am liking the new aluminum lids on the Grizzly cans.

Well well, ain't life awesome. Some of you all may have seen my posts on here over the past year or so asking for help with various repair projects on a boat that i got last year, well i am now out of commission. Let me give you all a run down of my luck thus far. Last year my Godfather shipped off with the MS National Guard, and left me a 16 foot beat to death weld-bilt that had been sitting behind his barn for "God knows how long". Me being the anxious 17 year old i was, drove out to pick it up and i was AMAZED. My own boat finally, all mine. So i loaded it in the truck and began work. I re-fabbed much of the boat, new transom, flooring panels, cut a new live-well cover, smoothed out all the dents and repainted it (Green, my favorite!). Next step was to get a trailer. Another relative had one out back, wrecked buried in weeds, a product of Katrina. Still, it looked great to me. So i put it on another trailer and hauled it to my backyard. At this point my mother was breathin fire since i had turned her beautiful backyard into a mud hole scattered with boat parts and tools. I rebuilt this trailer GROUND UP: new axles which my grandfather helped me weld, new tires, rotors, brake light system, hitch, pulley, the works!. So i finally had it lookin pretty good. Next i had to find a motor on a 300 dollar budget from my summer job. I saved up and found myself a Go-Devil for 1100, it smoked a little but boy did it look good. So i forked out the last of my cash and got me a motor. Mounted it up and after replacing most all the accessory parts on it (oil filter, throttle cable, muffler, electric starter - recoiled the pull start by myself which was tough to do) I WAS READY! So with all of the work completed i went to the title agencies with a signed note written from my Godfather (shipped home from overseas)i was told they couldn't help me since he was not present to sign, as "handwritten appearances" don't count. So i decided hell with it, i'm gonna fish. So i passed my boater's safety, and waited for the first good weekend. I made my first fish and even though i didn't catch a thing i loved every minute of it. I made a few more trips and noticed the motor was running strange. Well it gave up on me three weeks ago and left me stranded down river with nothing but a paddle. After 4 hours i crawled onto the dock and realized i needed something more reliable. So i was fortunately able to trade with a nice guy for a 25 hp mercury which i was pleased with. I went out last weekend and caught me some perch, it seemed my journey was complete! i was fishin! That is until last night when i went out in the backyard to hook up my boat and go fishing in the Pearl this morning and i noticed i couldnt see my boat, something was covering it. I got out of my truck and walked closer. A 90 foot tall pine tree on a contractor's land fell onto my boat, crushed it in half and the trailer along with it. Ironically, there wasnt a dark cloud in the sky all day yesterday and no wind at all, it just decided to fall out of the blue, on the one spot that made a difference. I was ready to give up. My dad made some phone calls to the contractor to come and clean his tree and take a look at our boat which would need replacing, his response - "there's nothing i can do about that". This happened during Katrina as well, damaging our entire fence and he was no help to us then either. Next call was our insurance, who said the best they could do was take a look at it, but since it was an "Act of Nature" they most likely can't help. So now here i am, two years later, back to square one, no more boat. My godfather who was looking forward to coming home (in two weeks) and going on a few fishin trips with me will not have that chance.I myself am going to be shipping off this summer with the navy so there is no time to rebuild another boat. So, I apologize for the novel i just wrote, i just needed to get that off of my chest. AINT LIFE AWESOME! At least we won the super bowl right?? Who Dat!

Hey yall, anybody ever done any frog giggin around slidell or the northshore (specifically in the pearl) just want to know if it will be worth a trip out there. Never gigged before, just wantin to try it out.

March 23, 2010 at 10:36am

Howdy, watching versus this morning there was a Tred Barta segment on with him doing some fly fishing in SC for reds/specs in the marsh. I was wondering if anyone one here had ever given that a try and if so, is it worth it? And if not flying for saltwater, what about freshwater, i think its something id be interested in trying. Anybody have a two cents?

March 21, 2010 at 11:23am

Any body know of a good place to take my longtail for a check up around slidell? not sure where to go, many of the places said they wouldnt look at it..headache and a half.

March 09, 2010 at 9:29pm

Hey yall, WE DAT!

Following a relatively unsuccessful duck season and a damaged longtail i have been out of operation for nearly two months. After a welding job as well as some other tedious tlc, i am ready to get back out there. I have a 16 ft alweld with a 24 HP longtail mounted up on it. My question is: has anyone had any success with specks or reds back in the marshes of the rigolets (salt bayou, stump lagoon, little lake) im nervous to take my small setup out into the main pass of the rigolets so i try and hug the inlets as much as possible. So, any success back in the small places? any help, info would be great.

March 08, 2010 at 9:49pm

i was out scouting the marsh yesterday in PRWMA and i noticed a few flatboats with utility ladders on them..whats the idea behind this? Thanks.

November 23, 2009 at 8:12pm

Anybody have a good idea to make some cheap guide posts for a 15 ft flatboat trailer? No access to welding.

November 23, 2009 at 2:51pm

Anybody ever hunt south of 90 in the pearl river WMA or has anyone had any luck in big branch yet? no specific locations, just want to know whether or not its worth my time to go out there and scout for a good spot later today. GEAUX SAINTS!

November 22, 2009 at 1:56pm

Awesome! School canceled. goin huntin tomorrow. anyone ever hunt the range side of the pearl WMA? bringin my compound bow lookin for hogs or a nice deer. still tryin to learn the ropes in here so any knowledge would be appreciated.

November 08, 2009 at 11:02pm

Went out this morning in the pearl WMA for my last youth hunt (17 this year), nice morning, good weather...go away IDA i got football playoffs this week! Lots of flooding on the side opposite the shooting range, waded to find a nice tree to put the stand in. My pops had set up in a lawnchair on a nice clearcut about 50 yards away to "watch"...(sleep haha). Anyway, heard many hogs in the early morning but none stepped out, also, i was getting SWARMED by woodies..they were all over me, anyone duck hunt the pearl? need some tips. Being the sometimes inattentive young man that i am, i dozed off at about 7:30 only to be awaken 15 minutes later by a "swoosh swoosh swoosh", i looked below me in the flooded trail to see 7..yes 7! hen turkeys just hanging around. Ive been in huntin around there for years and hadn't even seen or heard a turkey. Took all of my integrity not to pull up on one of those pretty birds, although i did shoot some photos of them which i will post. Thankfully i didn't because, after 4 more hours of silence i climbed out of the tree...woke my dad up haha...and got back to the truck to find that in the darkness that morning i parked in a bog. WLF ended up pulling me out. Moral of the day for me was..if you have to think about the consequences of taking game, dont do it. Oh, and that im going turkey hunting in that spot haha! =] geez i wrote a novel here haha sorry.

So even though i was skunked, it was a fun end to my "hunting youth"

Oh and by the way BLACK AND GOLD SUPER BOWL BABY! were comin back to beat these panthers.

November 08, 2009 at 3:49pm

17 years old, just starting to hunt independently. Tomorrow (the 8th) is scheduled as the youth hunt for the pearl river WMA.

Two questions:
is it legal to shoot with my .308? (i.e. are all "firearms" legal - the regulations manual isnt the clearest thing in the world to me)
Do i have to have an individual over 18 years of age with me? (pop in the hospital not doin so good)

November 07, 2009 at 11:20pm

Anybody got any tips on catfish noodlin? (where to look, how to grab, safety- how to avoid snappin turtles!) i have a 15 ft alweld with a 18 geaux devil longtail, so thats my rig, i have easiest access to the pearl river, so any location specific tips would be great! thanks yall

Just to reiterate, bad stuff happens if you don't watch the weather/tides. Not only does it affect your mobility but the falling water in Biloxi really puts your lower unit at risk of brushing with some serious hurricane debris on the bottom of the lagoons. The worst of which in my opinion is magnolia, where I managed to crack a lower unit on something last year. It is a fun place to explore though, if you have the wherewithal. Enjoy!

Motoring, we jerry rigged an ice chest on the bow of a skiff and had a little haphazard poling platform operation going on, we worked it just as well as the pros though!
