We have a stand in Avoyelles parish we call the zoo! Every time we hunt it, it's nothing to see 10-20 deer, some turkeys and maybe some ducks swimming by!! On new years eve, I asked Dad if I could take my youngest daughter, age 8, to the zoo stand as she hasn't seen many deer this year while hunting and I thought it would be a good experience for her and I to share together. With the rut just getting started in our area, we decided to get on the stand around 2 that afternoon to give us the most time in the stand. We didn't see our first deer till around 3:30, which was a yearling at the rice bran pile Dad had put out that morning. Around 4:00, several does stepped out at the feeder and started their normal afternoon of eating corn!! It's always exciting when the doe kept looking back into the woods, as you know something is holding their attention. A few short mins later, several more does and yearlings came out to the feeder followed by a small 6 pt and 4 pt. The 6 pt was bumping the does and pushing them around a little while the 4 pt was just worried about eating corn! While we were watching this show, I notice two more yearlings came out the rice bran pile and started eating. Around 4:30 while watching all this activity, out stepped the big boy! Dad and I call them WOW POW deer because when they come out, you say WOW and then the gun does POW!! When he stepped out around 110 yards from the stand at the pile of rice bran, it was a WOW POW moment. We had to watch him for a few mins due to the size requirements on the property to make sure he made the cut and he was facing away from us so we didn't have a good shot. Once he turned around in the shooting lane and gave us a good shot, it was a done deal!! Once we found the deer, by daughter said 'Dad, this was an answer to my prayer'. I asked her what she prayed and she said she prayed for a big buck to come out so I could shoot it!! It was a day we both won't forget for some time as we ended up seeing 14 deer and I killed my biggest buck. He ended up weighing 245 lbs and scored 150-7/8'. Take a kid hunting every chance you get as you won't regret it!!
Saturday will be a day I won't forget!! As it was the opening day of duck season for the coastal zone and opening day of muzzle loader season for our property in Avoyelles parish.
Friday night I asked my 4yr if he wanted to make a duck hunt with me in the morning, his words were 'yes and I'm going to bed'!! Saturday morning around 4:45, I woke him up and we got dressed with no problem! Made the short trip to the blind with plenty of time to spare and got all the decoys placed and blind ready. As the sun started to break the horizon, we didn't see many ducks flying. It wasn't much longer before they started. Within the next 45 mins, my brother in law and I were able to knock down our 12 ducks, 8 BW teal and 4 GW teal. Once we picked up things, my little man had his chance with his BB gun to do a little shooting! All I can say is watch out decoys this year!! He made quick work of all the decoys and we called it a day.
Once we got home and cleaned all the ducks, it was time to think about making a trip to try and kill a deer. I asked my 10 yr old daughter if she was interested in making the hunt with me. Her first response was 'Can I kill one'? I said sure. We loaded the truck with my 35 Wheelen and her youth .243 rifles. Once we took care of all the issues on the property the bears are given us (I hate bears) we settled in to the stand around 3:30. While walking up the stand, we jumped a little doe out the food plot. I thought we had missed our chance as we got there too late. About an hr and half later, out stepped a little yearling and a big doe. My little girl decided she wanted to shot the big doe, so we started the process of getting her gun out the window and her moved over to the other side of the stand without the deer hearing or seeing us! It took us about 10 mins to get the shot off as she was shaking so much and we couldn't get her breathing down!!! Once we were able to calm her nerves some and get the good broadside shot, she let it fly!! The bullet hit the mark and the doe fell in her tracks!
Nothing like a little morning kiss!!
I have a 2005 36 volt EZ-Go golf cart that has been jacked up about 5" and mud tires have been installed and I have purchased 6 new Interstate batteries about 3 months ago.
I am having a hell of a time keeping a charge on the batteries when I go hunting or just driving around the yard for extended periods of time. Does anybody have any experience with these carts that can point me in a direction of things to test?? My Dad has a Bad Boy buggie and he runs circles around me in terms of distance and speed. I know they are 48 volt carts, but I have ridden in 36 volt carts that are much faster and powerful than mine.
Well after three tries and three girls the fourth proved to be the man I've been looking for. Momma had a big bouncing baby boy Friday!!
I'm looking at booking an offshore charter trip for 15-16 people and need some references. We plan to fish on one boat. Anybody have any experience with a charter captain they would like recommending to accommodate that large of a party. Thanks.
I'm looking for a good trainer around the Lafayette area to take a 10 mth old lab. Any body deal with trainers around the Lafayette area and can recommend someone?
I need some help. My guns are in need of some repairs after this hunting season, and Custom Gun Works in Lafayette sold out to some different guys not that long ago. I've been in their a couple of times, but don't fell comfortable like I did when Tony owned the place. Any body know of some other good gun smith's in the area?
This weekend was not great for the old hunting buddy Max. Friday afternoon I was riding the kids on the 4 wheeler and the old lab was running in the yard and swimming in the pond. While running in the back yard, he blew out his rear left knee. I heard it pop when it tore. After a couple of hrs of surgery yesterday, he should be coming home tomorrow. Has this happened before to anyone's dog? How long was the recovery time? Will he ever hunt again?
I would like to try and feed some protein this year. Was wondering how many people do this in LA, and what name brand everyone feeds? Thanks.
I'm looking at buying several pit blinds. Who has the best one out there to sink in a field and hunt 4 guys out of?
