I have hunting privlages on some property in Baton Rouge. Two years ago we found a tresspasser had set up a ground blind and climbing stand location on the property. We removed the stand from the tree and removed the ground blind. Last year we found the tree stand in the exact same tree. I removed the stand and took it with me. I left a note on the tree for the owner of the stand to call me if they wanted the stand back. Several days later I recieved a call about the stand. I politely explained that the property is private and that he did not have permission to be on the property for any reason. He agreed(so he said) to not hunt the property anymore. So I returned the stand to the property line and he retrieved it. Well fast forward another year. Monday morning I was sitting on my stand when I hear a shot from behind me. At the time I was thinking it was from the property next door. After sometime another shot rang out. So later when I got down off my stand and retrieving my atv I decided to ride the woods. Low and behold I find fresh blood and a drag trail off the property. Coming back towards my atv I start looking for evidence of a stand location. When I find corn all over the place. Then a game camera and then find the very same stand from the last several years. I know this because I marked the stand in a way only I would know. The same person once again tresspassing and killing deer on property he has no permission to be on. So my question is what should I do about this? Call the LDWF and press charges? Sheriff for tresspassing? What?

Below is a picture of a 5pt my son and one of his friends took last week in EBR Parish. This was their first buck with horns. They both shoot 243cal single shot youth rifles. Now that he has his first set of horns out of the way he says he is wall hanging hunting.

Nothing seen or killed on the first day. Retrieved the card from my camera and look what was on it.

Are they the same deer???

After proudly watching my son kill his first two deer of his life this past month. I finally got one of my own. Only difference this being a buck. Appears the rut is now in full swing. I had three bucks chasing this one doe. Ended up taking what I think was the largest of two of them. The third was several points smaller. 9 points and 190lbs. Hopefully my son can get one of the other ones this weekend.

It is a wonderful experience to watch your son take his first deer of his life. This one happens to be his second one of the week(no pictures of the first). The first was taken with his Rossi Youth 50cal muzzleloader and his second with his Rossi Youth 243. On on opening muzzleloader weekend and one opening rifle weekend. It is amazing how much knowledge young hunters pick up just from being in the woods with other experienced hunters. This young man wants to hunt all the time. If I never shoot a deer again while he's on the stand with me, I can live with that. Take your sons and daughters with you when you go hunting. It's an experience you will never forget.

A comment titled: Soybens in response to a report titled: Soybeans in Bulk

If your deer are not used to eating soybeans then I would suggest you mix beans and corn. More heavily on the corn side to get them used to them and then slowly remove the corn. Good thing about beans is the coons do not seem to like them at all and will not fool with them.

A comment titled: traps in response to a report titled: Hog Traps

Sac's Western, Old Time Feed store and Tractor Supply have them in Gonzales. TS sells just the gate as well. Then all you need is the hog panels and fence t-post to complete the trap. If you go the build it your self route make sure you bury the wire into the ground to keep them from digging under it. Some barb wire around the bottom helps also. Make the trap round if it doesn't have a top.

A comment titled: Trespassers in response to a report titled: feedback

Good luck catching the trespasser. I am fighting them as well. Thought I only had one. Went on a scouting trip last week and found 4 additional stands and a feeder. We try not to hunt all our property, keeping some off limits area for bedding. Low and behold this is where the stands were. And were only found because we were making a later hunt one day and had shots come from close by. So we went looking. Good luck.

A comment titled: Soil Sample first in response to a report titled: Food Plot Supplies

You are throwing $$$ away everytime you plant and not know what condition you soil in your plots are. Most importantly is the soil PH. I suspect it is low if you are having trouble growing plots. Are you in pine tree country? Disc your plot completely and get a bucket. Grab a handful of soil in 6 or 7 different spots. Mix in a bucket good and take a quart sized bag and fill it. Find you local LSU Cooperative extension and bring the samples to them. They will have sample boxes to put the sample in. They will analyze the sample and tell you exactly whats in it and what is needed. Cost $10 each but well worth it. You will be amazed at the difference you plots will be when the PH is correct. One thing about lime is it takes about 6 months to take affect. So getting the samples taken and adding the correct amount asap will put you just about in time for fall plots.

A comment titled: Time for the wardens in response to a report titled: Need some advice

Thanks guys!!! I believe I will get the LDWF involved. As I was checking out the situation with this particular tresspasser I came across quite a few deer carcuses. I think I'm gonna speak with the wardens and let them determine if the proper tagging and documnentation of the deer has occured as well as the tresspassing deal. And see what they say.

A comment titled: Millennium Tree Stands or Equalizer in response to a report titled: Tree Climber Stand for Swamp Hunting

Take it from me the Millennium Tree Stand is one of the most comfortable stands you can get. I have one loc on and three other blocks. Total of 4 stands that are huntable at any given time. No worry about anyone else hunting my stand. Using either screw in steps or ladders. Stand doesn't weigh alot so its easy to connect to the block. Millennium Tree Stands also make single ladders, double ladders and even a seat for the tree that can be used at ground level. Bowies in Baton Rouge has them all. Or check out

Also have a friend with the equalizer stand. He swears by it. Easily adjustable for any deficiancies on any tree. If you have use a climber before you know sometimes you have to adjust the stand several times at grade level before the stand is sitting in a comfortable position at hunting height. With the equalizer you can crank and level the stand as you climb if you want.

Both are kinda pricey.

A comment titled: Call the Sheriff in response to a report titled: access opinions

If you are the landholder I would take it you know if a right of passage servitude is there. The servitude is for a specific piece or area on that property. I would almost guess the logging road is not a passage servitude. Check the other individuals lease papers or call the other landowner. If no servitude is listed or the court house has no record of a servitude then there is none. Call the Sheriff departments.

When I bought my license a couple of years ago I went to the Baton Rouge office and paid in person. I was told my reciept was proof of license until my hardcopy arrived. This still may be the case. Also your fee is tax deductable on your state income taxes.
