Meat hauling fun in Shell Beach. Forrest Fife and Sean Stuckey came down for another round of crab eating and fishing. They cooked and ate some pretty crabs the night before at the lodge and in the morning we headed into the Sound. They really were not too interested in trout, so I hit some rigs I have not fished this year. We bounced around a few spots and found a few trout, but plenty of the other creatures they were looking for. Good eating sized reds along with bulls mixed in and plenty sheepshead. We made a stop in the marsh on the way in and the guys topped off the box. Then it was back to crab boiling for them. I have some openings the next couple of weeks and the fishing is really good right now. Don’t forget, Fall is fast on its way and some of the best fishing of the year comes with it. Get your dates locked in and don’t miss out. Call now to book your trip of a lifetime. Overnight accommodations on the bayou are available. All fish in the Suzuki powered Blazer Bay 2400 were caught with Campo’s live shrimp under a 4-Horsemen cork on Capt. Rory's United Charters custom rods provided by CUI Products with Penn reels, spooled with KastKing line. All fish removed and boxed with the one and only Jus Grab it Glove. Capt. Stormy day in Shell Beach. Rudy Ramos and his son Jonathan came down to get in a trip before classes started up again. The plan was to start out looking for trout. Our first couple of stops did not produce so with weather closing in on us we ran back inside to look for some reds. We managed to fill the box, avoid the rain, and had a great time. One stop shopping in Shell Beach. Today I had the Kirk’s Tire and Accessories gang of Kirk, KB, Blake, and David on the Blazer Bay. We opted to go for redfish and it was a good move, even though the calm winds were tempting for a trout run. We made one stop fishing a grass line and never moved. Campo’s live shrimp under a 4-Horsemen cork made for steady action. The guys filled the box with limits of reds, 2 stud flounder, and 8 bass. They then caught and released for a while before it was time to run from a storm headed our way. Monday I had Alvin Crab Man Royce and his son Justus out to look for some trout before school starts up again. Conditions were nice, but the bite was tough for us. We started out wasting a lot of bait at the Rocks, so we then ran deep into the Sound. Had plenty of action, just a lot of trash fish around. Got on one trout bite of some nice big trout that is if you could keep the bait from the Ladyfish. Matrix Shads fished both tightlined or under a cork worked better than the shrimp that day. Fun day with good friends. The Speckled Trout bite has been good outside deep in the Sound when conditions permit, but the Redfish have been really hot and consistent in the marsh. Back to the Beach. Things are getting back to normal here in Shell Beach. Barry was just a minor annoyance, and the water only came up enough to put a little mud on the docks. It must have been enough to get the Redfish excited though. No trout reports yet, but the Redfish are going nuts in the marsh. I have Wednesday and Thursday open and the winds and weather looks great. You have been cooped up inside too long, so book one or both of these days and let’s rip some lips. Capt. Breezy day two in Shell Beach. Tuesday was day two for Forrest and Robert. We tried to get on the trout early like the day before, but the winds were just too high. We managed to put 12 good trout in the box, before giving up on the trout. We hit the marsh to look for reds and it started out a little slow, but like the flick of a switch they turned on and we limited out and released a lot more. Another successful meat haul for the boys from Monroe. All fish in the Suzuki powered Blazer Bay 2400 were caught with Campo’s live shrimp under a 4-Horsemen cork on Capt. Speckled Monday at Shell Beach. Forrest Fife brought Monroe radio personality Robert DjWorm Jarvis down for his first taste of the salt marsh. We started out looking for trout and got on a good bite right off the bat. The trout were mixed in size with plenty throwbacks to weed through, but the keepers were really nice. The bite got interrupted briefly by a large drum that Robert beat into submission. We had 55 trout on ice when things slowed down so we made a move to a shoreline and the guys picked off 8 nice reds to top off the box. Fun day of fishing with more to come for day two. Starting July with a bang in Shell Beach. Monday I had Kevin Ford of Louisiana Outdoor Adventures, Kerri Callais of the St Bernard Parish Counsel, and Robbie Campo of Campo’s Marina on the Blazer Bay. We had a great time and got on a really good bite, making only one stop putting 52 Trout and 10 Reds on ice. The Reds were so aggressive one even ate a 16” trout. A lot of action and a lot of fun. One of those days at the Beach. Tuesday I had Oneofthepack and Big Leon on the Blazer Bay. Our goal was to fish deep in the Sound for trout. The wind was a little more than forecast, but not too bad. We made several moves and covered a lot of water. We got on a fast trout bite, with more throwbacks than keepers, but the keepers were nice. The sharks were out in force at a few stops, giving us some thrills. Still it was a fun day on the water with a couple of great guys. Reds on the Beach. I picked Kevin Rome and 4 of his friends in Fort Beauregard. It was a little too breezy to chase trout outside, so to the marsh we headed. Things started out a little slow, picking up a few keepers, but mostly rat reds. Made a couple of moves and got on a good bite that filled the box with pretty reds. Limits of reds and a great time had by all. All fish in the Suzuki powered Blazer Bay 2400 were caught with Campo’s live shrimp on Capt. Thursday at the Beach I had the pleasure of fishing with Tommy and Quinn Morrison. The guys wanted to chase Redfish in the marsh and it was a good call. At our first stop we got on a good bite that picked up as a rain shower passed over. It seemed like the fish liked the rain, because when it stopped the bite slowed down. After that shower passed the wind really kicked up. We bounced around a couple other spots getting on another good bite, before calling it a day with limits of Reds and a few Bass. Wednesday Shell Beach meat haul. Forrest Fife brought his buddy Sean Stuckey down to The Beach from Monroe, LA for his first inshore trip. Sean has done plenty fishing, but not inshore saltwater. Funny thing is we caught plenty familiar freshwater along with limits of Reds. There was lots of action all day long to go with the cutting up. Fun day on the water and a full box with 15 Reds, 10 Stripers, 4 Bass, and 9 Sheepshead. All fish in the Suzuki powered Blazer Bay 2400 were caught with Campo’s live shrimp on Capt. Speckled trout Tuesday in Shell Beach. Today I had Dr Steve Slaton and family onboard. They really wanted Trout, so we gave that a try first. The wind made things a little sporty, but the trout did not care today. Campo’s live shrimp under 4-Horsemen corks put 82 trout on ice, along with a couple of Reds that were let go. Windy reds in Shell Beach. Today was day one for the Mike Drake group. With the wind blowing 20 out the NE trout were out of the question, so we headed into the marsh to chase redfish. It was never a fast crazy bite, but steady enough to keep us around and the guys filled the box with limits of reds along with 2 trout, 2 flounder, and a few sheepshead. It was a fun day and hopefully the winds stay down for tomorrow so we can chase trout for day two. All fish in the Suzuki powered Blazer Bay 2400 were caught with Campo’s live shrimp on Capt. Last Saturday in Shell Beach was not an easy one. Jamey Sandefur and family were all set to chase trout out in the Sound. I whacked them pretty good the day before, so we pounded it out to the same area. We moved around quite a bit and never got a bite besides ladyfish. We bounced around a few other spots while talking other striking out too. With time ticking by and nothing in the box, we scrapped the trout plan and headed into the marsh for reds. We got on a good redfish bite right off the bat to save the day. We only covered 130 miles of water, but had a lot of fun catching a nice box of fish. GOT AN OPENING FRIDAY JUNE 14. Speck slam in Shell Beach. Friday I had the Jim Walther group onboard. They only wanted trout, and fr a change the wind was not howling, so it was deep into the Sound we went. We had a slow bite going at our first stop, but these were really nice sized trout. After that fizzled out we move a couple miles away, and the Trout went nuts. We started with Campo’s live shrimp 3” under a cork, but when the trout got heated up we switched to Vortex Shads and it was really on. When number 125 hit the deck we could not put them all in the fish box, so the drink box played double duty that day. GOT SOME OPENINGS THIS WEEK INCLUDING FRIDAY!!!!! Forget the Bill Dance hook sets when using a khale hook. They tend to work a lot like a circle hook and if set hard will pop right out of the fishes mouth. Just lift pole while reeling fast.

I believe it to be a juvenile Barracuda. I have been told that it is a Southern Sennet, a close relative of the Barracuda. I trusted friend and diver says it is a Cuda. Regardless not what you expect to catch while trout fishing, but out in Breton Sound you just never know what might bite. I have caught Cobia that this shame rig and know of a tarpon caught there also.

Odds of a bank financing a 20 year old outboard are slim to none.

August 17, 2018 at 8:57am

It is not about the boats taking the food away from the predators causing the kills. It is the predators getting caught in the nets. They use huge purse seines that are corralled around the large schools of pogys. These schools are usually spotted by the commotion of jack, sharks, and reds feeding on the schools of pogys. No one can tell me that those nets do not catch everything in the water and that our game fish are not being slaughtered as bycatch. Pogys are the base of the food chain so if the pogy industry is not kept in check it could cause a total collapse of our fishery.

August 14, 2018 at 5:30pm

It has been another so so trout year. We have still been doing well, but we have been having to work for them and very little consistency. I have also noticed a lot less bait in the water this year. I feel this past hard winter was tougher on the trout than anyone first thought. Although there were no massive fish kills reported I feel there were a lot of trout that died slowly afterwards and never surfaced. This could explain the lack of small schoolies as they are hit the hardest by poor conditions.

Too much freshwater and high west winds again this year have things more than a little off. Once again this year the river stayed very high for a long time. You could count the days we have had a E or SE wind this year on one hand. I don't care who you are, these make for tough trout conditions. The entire east side of the river has gotten remarkably fresher and fresher the last several years. This has shifted breeding a feeding grounds as trout look for suitable conditions. This means fishermen will have to change their ways and places too. Remember, trout can live in pretty fresh water, but need salty water to spawn, and spawning in what they are supposed to be doing this time of year.

On the up side mother nature has a way of filling any voids in fish populations, so with a little weather cooperation the trout should make a major rebound. Regardless, October can't get here fast enough.
