Redfish fun in Shell Beach. Today I had Forrest and Michelle on the Blazer Bay. This was Michelle’s first marsh fishing trip, and she put the first keeper red of the day on ice. We fished in the Biloxi marsh with Campo’s live shrimp under a Four Horsemen cork. It was a lot of fun watching the reds chase the shrimp to the surface and blow up on them. Even had a nice flounder to add to the limits of reds. The fishing in Shell Beach is on fire. The trout action gets better and better every day when the winds are decent, and the reds have been hungry in the marsh when it blows. We have plenty of open dates, so get out of the house and get on the water. No better place to be. Call now to book your trip of a lifetime. Overnight accommodations on the bayou are available. All fish in the Suzuki powered Blazer Bay 2400 were caught with Campo’s live shrimp under a 4-Horsemen cork on Kast King rods with Penn reels, spooled with Kast King line. All fish removed and boxed with the one and only Jus Grab it Glove. Capt. Speckled Friday in Shell Beach. Onboard the Blazer Bay were Pat, Brian, David, and Nathan. Pat and Brian have fished with me for years now, but this was going to be Nathan’s first ever fishing trip. There was a rain shower over the area I wanted to go to, so we stopped short to try a couple spots with not much action. Finally, the rain moved on and we moved to the rig I wanted to start at. When we got there the birds were diving all over the place. The trout were eating up and the guys had a blast. The cooler was filling fast, till the falling tide stopped and so did the bite. With plenty trout the guys wanted to try for some reds. We made one stop and picked up 8 keepers and released a lot of under sized ones. Fun day on the water and young Nathan is hooked and looking forward to his next trip. The fishing in Shell Beach is on fire. Monday in Shell Beach I had Al Fandrich and family out for a day on the water. With the extremely low water and a good breeze blowing we set up on the edge of the Sound in as protected an area we could find. The bite would start and stop, and never got really turned on, but sticking with it they put together a nice box of fish. They had a great time and are looking forward to the next. I have openings this weekend and next week. The summer pattern is shaping up and the action will be getting hotter and hotter. Get out of the house and get on the water. Last Friday at Shell beach I had Brian Renshaw, his son Tate, and Chris Talazac on the Blazer Bay. It was Tate’s 10th birthday and a fishing trip is what he wanted. As is typical when Brian books it was forecast to by windy, but at the first stop it was not bad. They managed to put some trout on ice, but before long the gale force Brian winds were on and shut the bite down. From there we ducked into the marsh to find some reds and the guys managed to put together a nice mixed box and had a lot of fun celebrating Tate’s birthday. Trout Tuesday in Shell Beach. Gary, Richard, and Paul jumped on the Blazer Bay and we took off in search of some speckled trout. Armed with Campo’s live shrimp we hit the Sound in nice conditions. We got on a good bite at our first stop, but it was short lived. From there we bounced around a few spots waiting on the tide to flip. The guys ground it out and ended up putting 75 trout and a red on ice. Spring is here and the trout bite is getting better every day. There is still excellent action on big bull reds and sheepshead if you just want to tangle with some really big fish, along with plenty of fish in the marsh on windy days. Trout Thursday in Shell Beach. Matt Lester and family were my guests for the day and a good day it was. They were in town from San Antonio and wanted to enjoy a day of Louisiana fishing. They were not looking to keep any fish to take home, so a lot of fish got really lucky, except for a dozen trout I kept for me and the wife. They had nonstop action from the start and all day long. The trout were really biting as were a bunch of sheepshead and several nice slot reds. We made a couple moves to try and find some big reds for the kids and did not find any at a normally good spot. There was a guy not far from us that was hooked up constantly. He hollered for us to come over near him and tossed us a few of the big gold spoons he was using. Sure as heck both the boys hooked up with some big redfish. The last two in the photo was a double hook up that ended a perfect day on the water. A special thank you to the Gold Spoon Man, you made those kids day. Spring is here and it’s time for the Sheepshead and Bull Red run out in Breton Sound. If you want fast action, big fish, and plenty of them, now is the time. There are plenty trout around too if that is what you are looking for. Now is also time to get your spring and summer trout trips booked now as choice dates are going fast. Call now to book your trip of a lifetime. Overnight accommodations on the bayou are available. Wednesday meat haul in Shell Beach. The Paul Denis group hopped on the Blazer Bay and off into the thick fog we went. We made our way out deep into Breton Sound to a small wellhead and the reds and heads were there and hungry. They released several big bulls reds and kept a few along with a box full of sheepshead. We made a stop on the way back to look for some smaller keeper reds and ended up putting 12 trout and few more heads on ice. Fun day with nonstop action. One good day and one tough day in Shell Beach. Forrest Fife and Dan Saterfield came down from Monroe for two days of meat hauling Tuesday and Wednesday. They really wanted to get out into the Sound for a Sheepshead round up and battle with some bull reds. Tuesday conditions were perfect with very little wind and plenty for tide moving a day when none was forecast. They loaded the box with heads in short order and a few reds to boot, releasing some other bulls. Wednesday was a different story. A front came through the night before and we left the dock in 30+ knot winds. Even with all the wind the water was hardly moving, and the fish were sluggish. The guys managed to put together a decent box of reds in some horrible conditions. Two fun days with two super guys. Shell Beach trout trip. Wednesday Steve, Greg, and Tim wanted to go look for the elusive speckled trout. There was some rain in the area, but it stayed away from us for the most part. We headed over towards Four Horse and made a drift picking up a few trout as we drifted along. As we drifted closer to a point we had multiple hookups, so I stuck us down and the guys started to work on the trout. Nothing fast and furious, but steady enough with some sheepshead in the mix. With a good pile of trout on ice the guys wanted to look for a couple reds. We made a small move, but only picked up one red and lost another, then casting out past the point there were some more trout. We stuck with that till the winds got ridiculous and the guys said they had plenty enough fish so we headed to the house with 61 trout, 22 heads, 3 drum, 2 blue cats, and 1 red on ice. Spring is here and it’s time for the Sheepshead and Bull Red run out in Breton Sound. If you want fast action, big fish, and plenty of them, now is the time. Daddy daughter day in Shell Beach. Today daughter #1 Elizabeth finally had a day off from work while I had the same. We headed out for a quick afternoon day on the water. The water was super low and the wind was blowing pretty good, so we stayed close by in the MRGO. We had a great time together catching a limit of perfect eating sized redfish, while releasing a bunch of under sized reds. A couple tasty bass also hit the ice. It was a great day of long overdue together time on the water. Now that winter is almost over it’s time for big fish meat hauling out in Breton Sound. Tuesday With the Treuting Crew in Shell Beach. The Treuting crew hopped on the Blazer Bay and really wanted to catch some trout. With a strong front rolling through the night before stirring thin s up and dropping the water temp down near 50* I knew it would be tough, but off we went. After trying a few different areas with little to show for we switched to plan B looking for some redfish, and even they were finicky. Time for plan C. We set up in a deep canal intersection and started putting some meat in the box. The guys had a blast catching sheepshead one after the other, with a bunch of blue cats and even some of the elusive trout hit the ice. We ended up with a nice mixed box and had a great time. Saturday in Shell Beach I was joined by Mitchell Morgan and his son Mason. We headed into the marsh on a chilly, but pretty morning. Things started off a little slow with very little bait or fish activity at our first stop. I noticed some bait activity on the other side of the pond so we moved over and first thing Mitchell hooks into a big red. Next Mason put in a couple good eating sized reds before that action died out. We moved to another area and the guys started putting fish in the box a good pace, and by the end of the day the guys got their limits of reds and filled up the box with a nice mix of bass, and sheepshed. I got to be honest, you guys did better than we did. It was so pretty we went for the gusto and ran deep into the Sound looking only for big trout and it just did not happen. Had to run back closer in and weed trough a lot of throw backs. That's how it is some times when you run deep, you are either a hero or a zero. The Governor says that charter captains can still keep fishing, so why can't you? Marinas are open and will stay that way, as they are part of the marine transportation community. Get outside, get some fresh air, and get away from the craziness.

Got the following from the Louisiana Charter Boat Association yesterday evening. Now the problem is people canceling trips. I for one have a lot of open dates, so if you are looking for a last minute trip, now is the time. Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards recently announced a statewide stay-at home order, which will begin at 5 p.m. tomorrow. According to the Governor's Chief-of-Staff Mark Cooper, charter guides may continue operating as long as there are 10 or fewer individuals on your vessel, something that is not a concern for the vast majority of you. You are allowed to keep working because charter guides fit within the description of 'Maritime Transportation Workers,' according to the CISA Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers Guidelines. Click here for complete details of the Governor's order, and if you chose to continue operating, please follow all necessary safety precautions

Caught many fish on barb-less hooks. I will often bend the barbs down this time of year, especially when on a hot sheepshead bite as it makes unhooking and getting back in action much easier and faster. So what if one gets away here and there. You can't catch them all, but sure as hell can try too.

Not a fan of them at all, but I understand the need for the industry. Many of our commercial and recreational fisheries depend on a supply of pogies to exist as do many other industries that rely on them I do feel they need tighter regulation and the resource needs to be properly preserved.

Forgot to add, I hate treble hooks for fishing with bait. They generally only hook into loose flesh in the mouth and often pull out, or get swallowed deep. They should only be allowed on crank baits.

A comment titled: Re: Great day to be on the water in response to a report titled: Great day to be on the water

Not a problem with properly rigged live bait either. Kahle hooks or circle hooks, and properly handling and knowing how to remove a hook go a long long way towards released trout survival rates. With these hooks it more a easy rolling it out on the mouth than a yanking motion I see a lot of people do. This is why I insist on handling all fish that come into my boat.

bullcoon, way wrong, it's what's hot right now. If the wind is not blowing, who wants to fight the gnats to work for small trout skating across the surface, when you can go to the rigs in Breton Sound. No bugs and tons of ravenous sheepshead and bullreds. Still plenty trout in the marsh, but why fight it when the easy thing is just waiting for you out there. Besides, they eat way better than any worm filled trout or even a redfish any day. Not that on a good day right now, I couldn't put you on some pig trout on the outer edges. The trout are there if you want, but right now a lot of our customers only come down or book right now because the action out there is unreal. Best part is they only have to catch them and enjoy eating them since I am doing the hard part, cleaning them. It's a labor of love this time of year. Do you want non stop action? Do you want to catch big hard fighting fish? Do you want to tangle with some trophy redfish? Now through April is prime time. Let me do the hard part and you and your group get to have a blast and go home with plenty of great eats. I have some open dates if anyone wants to load the boat with reds and heads. Capt. We fished in the Lake John area yesterday and one of my clients filled a bottle with water from there. His daughter was doing a project for school on water samples. I said don't expect to see much salt in there. I pulled out the hydrometer I keep in the boat and it read 0 salt. Still we had a good day on the trout with some blue cats in the mix. The guys, from Texas, were amazed to catch trout and reds, along with blue cats and bass in the same spot. Still waiting for a crappie to show up in the mix.
