My trip for this Wednesday had to reschedule so here is a chance to get in on a last minute opportunity to catch a pre Thanksgiving feast. The redfish bite has been crazy and if it is the freckled kind you are looking for I know where they are too. Call, text, or mail me to make this Wednesday a day to be thankful for.

Spooky specks at Shell Beach. Yesterday I had Jim Walther and his two guests Clint and Clint on the Blazer Bay. The wind was howling when I picked them up at Jim’s camp and the tide was still rising though it should have been falling. We found some birds working in a pass between two lagoons and the guys went to work. The bite was not crazy fast, but was steady. When the tide finally turned around our bite faded, but not before the guys limited out on trout and added a few reds to the box before calling it a day.

All fish in the Suzuki powered Blazer Bay 2400 were caught with Campo’s live shrimp on Capt. Rory's United Charters custom rods provided by CUI Products with Penn reels, spooled with Power Pro line. All fish removed and boxed with the one and only Just Grab it Glove.

The trout are moving into the marsh and that great fall fishing is here. This is some of the best inshore fishing of the year. Friday fall fishing at Shell Beach. Today I helped Capt. Mark running 4 guys from Texas for him today. It was chilly, the NW wind howling and the tide was falling super hard. The guys said they wanted reds and reds they got. We made one stop and in less than an hour and a half 25 pretty reds were chilling in the box. After releasing some more reds we looked for some trout picking up 40 and some sheepshead we crammed into the overstuffed box. Could not ask for better results in less than ideal conditions.

Windy Wednesday at Shell Beach. I picked up the Jim Walther and his quests David and Larry at Jim’s camp and off we went to find some trout though expectations were not high. The wind was blowing ridiculously hard out the ENE. We found some birds diving in a bayou and the guys put some trout in boat weeding through a lot of through back. We moved further down the bayou and got on another trout bite till it faded with 40 or so in the box. Next we looked for some reds and plenty of them we found. The guys had a great time filling the box with some pretty reds.

Last Saturday at Shell Beach I had the Jamey Sandefur, his dad Doc, along with Grace, Brook, and Jim. It was a super foggy boat ride to our first stop where we got on a decent trout bite till some idiot in a tower boat came flying through right over our fish. We started to get them going again then comes two more boat loads of idiots right over our corks. After that was over we went and looked for a few reds and the crew put some nice ones on ice. We called it quits with rain on the horizon, but not before the crew put a nice box of fish together.

Another great day at Shell Beach. Today I helped Capt. Mark with a two boat trip. My three guys hopped on the boat and off we went. Our first stop was in a pond near Four Horse and it was nonstop action. There were some trout out to the middle and cast anywhere near the shore and it was and it was an instant red. It was fast and fun, but most of them were just under sized. There were enough good sized reds around to keep us sticking around. We left there to another area to look for some trout, but instead we ran into more reds filling out our limits and the guys caught a bunch more that were lucky enough to avoid the grill. Ended up with 40 trout, 20 reds, and 10 sheepshead. Fun day with a fun group.

I have some openings next week.

Finally some cool weather Trout at Shell Beach. Friday I had the Renshaw group of 3 from Atlanta. The cool boat ride sure was nice for a change, but it warmed up quickly making for a pretty day. Our first stop was where we found some birds diving where the tide was falling out a pass connecting two lagoons near Lake Robin. We had to weed through some throwbacks, but the keepers were really nice. The guys put near 60 on ice before the bite slowed down. They really wanted to catch some reds so off we went to a pond I like and it was on. Limited out on reds and must have caught and released 50+ more. Add in a bass, a drum, 4 sheepshead, and dozen more trout and the box was stuffed to the top. Great day of fishing with a fun group of guys.

I have this Tuesday and Wednesday open.

Late report from last Saturday at Shell Beach. I had the pleasure of taking Bert and Molly into the marsh to look for some reds. It was breezy and overcast with the tide rising fast. We made one stop and it was nonstop action. The reds were silly and we limited out in short order. They had a great time catching a bunch more reds before we headed in just in time to beat the rain.

Friday fun at Shell Beach. I picked up John, his wife Nicole and their son Q from their camp. It was Q’s birthday fishing trip and he was ready to hit the water. It was just a little to breezy to run out to the Sound so we stayed closer in. Fishing with Campo’s live shrimp 3’ under a cork they managed to put some good trout on ice with plenty throwbacks to weed through before the wind picked up and killed the bite. Q wanted to catch a redfish so we made move and beat the bank of a bayou. They had fun catching some nice reds for the grill that evening.

Wind from the West fish bite the best. Not really, any kind of west wind is not favorable for our area, but if it is not too bad you can deal with it. Deal with it is what the Chad Mason group did today. After a slightly bumpy ride to the fishing grounds we stop at our first rig and caught a few nice trout, but they would never turn on. We moved over to another rig and once we figured out where they were the corks were going down and pretty trout were flying in the boat. We got up to 65 trout and my crew said they had plenty so we heading in early and beat the heat.

The fishing has been really good and I have some openings next week and the following week. Get those kids out on the water before school starts back. Give me a call, text, or email to get in on the fun.

West wind trout at Shell Beach. Saturday I had the Reliable Disposal crew on the boat. We were greeted to a stiff NW wind that made for a rather sporty ride to our destination. Things started off a little slow, but after bouncing around a few wellheads we got on a couple good bites with Campo’s live shrimp 3’ under a cork. We got lucky with the wind too, as it laid down as we fished making for a nice dry ride back in. The guys had a lot of fun and put together a nice box of fish with 60 trout, 12 reds, and 6 heads.

It’s been a good June so far at Shell Beach. The summer weather is here and so are the trout. We have mostly been fishing deep in Breton Sound targeting larger trout with good success, but having to hunt around from rig to rig catching several trout till the bull reds or sharks take over. This makes for a lot of exciting action and ice chest stuffed to the top with fish. As good as it has been, it will only get better and better as we head into and through July. Speaking of July, I have some open dates available so call, text, or email me to get your trip in the books.

Funky weather Friday at Shell Beach. When the David Broussard group showed up at the dock there was quite a light show going on in the area. Good thing was most of it was clearing out as we pulled out the slip. With the wind blowing a bit too much to get out to the Sound and plenty of storms in the area we set up in a semi protected area off the MRGO. The bite was not fast, but the trout were very nice so we sat there and worked on them with live shrimp 3’ under a cork. With more rain building and a good box of trout we headed in just before noon beating the weather.

I have some open days next week, and the weather looks great.

Slammed them today at Shell Beach. I had the Renshaw group from Atlanta today and it was not a typical trip for them. Generally when Brian comes to town the wind blows like no one business, but today it was clam as could be. We ran out into the Sound and got on a decent trout bite putting close to 60 in before it died. Our shrimp were running low since we lost a lot of them this morning for some reason, but Capt. Jakamo saved the day giving me his remaining shrimp as they were done and headed in. We hit one more rig and that was all it took to fill the box with 125 trout, 1 red, and 3 sheepshead. Fun time on a beautiful day.

Granted fish kills caused by pogy boats don't happen all the time, but I have seen it happen plenty enough times.

Odds of a bank financing a 20 year old outboard are slim to none.

August 17 at 8:57am

It is not about the boats taking the food away from the predators causing the kills. It is the predators getting caught in the nets. They use huge purse seines that are corralled around the large schools of pogys. These schools are usually spotted by the commotion of jack, sharks, and reds feeding on the schools of pogys. No one can tell me that those nets do not catch everything in the water and that our game fish are not being slaughtered as bycatch. Pogys are the base of the food chain so if the pogy industry is not kept in check it could cause a total collapse of our fishery.

August 14 at 5:30pm

It has been another so so trout year. We have still been doing well, but we have been having to work for them and very little consistency. I have also noticed a lot less bait in the water this year. I feel this past hard winter was tougher on the trout than anyone first thought. Although there were no massive fish kills reported I feel there were a lot of trout that died slowly afterwards and never surfaced. This could explain the lack of small schoolies as they are hit the hardest by poor conditions.

Too much freshwater and high west winds again this year have things more than a little off. Once again this year the river stayed very high for a long time. You could count the days we have had a E or SE wind this year on one hand. I don't care who you are, these make for tough trout conditions. The entire east side of the river has gotten remarkably fresher and fresher the last several years. This has shifted breeding a feeding grounds as trout look for suitable conditions. This means fishermen will have to change their ways and places too. Remember, trout can live in pretty fresh water, but need salty water to spawn, and spawning in what they are supposed to be doing this time of year.

On the up side mother nature has a way of filling any voids in fish populations, so with a little weather cooperation the trout should make a major rebound. Regardless, October can't get here fast enough.

I have seen Breton Sound covered in dead bull reds many times. You can not tell me that it these fish kills are NOT from the pogey boats. I have seen it way too many times. I know it is a profitable business and several good products come from the harvesting of them, but over fishing of Menhaden is what killed the Chesapeake Bay area and the east coast years ago. You simply can not remove the major food source and not have a ecosystem collapse.

A comment titled: Re: summertime blues in response to a report titled: summertime blues

It's a mix of the really cold winter and extremely fresh water. There were not massive fish kills, but there were some and probably more than anyone found. The ones hit the hardest were the undersized ones that would have been our keeps now. Combine that with the fresh water displacing spawning trout and you end up with a very inconsistent year. Good news is nature responds well to these things and rebounds with bumper crops the following years.

It is definitely a Sea Robin. They are very common here and I often get small ones mixed in with my live shrimp.

A comment titled: Re: Shell beach trout?? in response to a report titled: Shell beach trout??

It has been a funny year for trout so far. We have been doing well way out in Breton Sound when conditions allow, but we have been having to work for them. The fish are there, the consistency is not. The entire area is really fresh right now and this low salinity is not what spawning trout are looking for. One thing I have noticed this year is the massive amounts of small croakers and pinfish all over the place, both inside and outside. I have never seen so many and they make fishing with live bait a pain in the ass.

I really do expect things to get a little better and more consistent in July. July typically is one of our best trout fishing months, you just have to deal with the heat.

I stand corrected. This has changed from what came out when the EFP originally was issued. So looks like it yes in state waters during state season. Thank you ShanpperSnagger.

3. Are charter boats allowed to participate in the EFP study?

No. If you are a state charter captain (those who do not have a federal Gulf of Mexico charter/headboat permit for reef fish), you may only fish for red snapper in state waters (within the 9 nautical mile state water boundary) when the state recreational red snapper season is open. You may not fish federal waters unless you have a federal Gulf of Mexico charter/headboat permit for reef fish.

A comment titled: Re: Venice of Red snapper in bay boat in response to a report titled: Venice of Red snapper in bay boat

Unless they have a federal reef fish permit for their boat they will not be fishing red snapper this year in state or federal waters. With the new management rules there is no more snapper fishing in state water on a charter boat unless they have the reef permit, something not many if any inshore charter boats have.

I use 1/0 Khale hooks. You can go to a 2/0, but I prefer the smaller hook on shrimp. Forget treble hooks, I hate them. One trick for Khale hooks is to not set the hook. Forget you ever saw a Bill Dance hook set. A khale hook will work a lot like a circle hook and when jerked hard will pop right out the fishes mouth without hooking it. Just reel fast to take up slack and get some pressure on the fish and the hook will turn and bury it's self.

Could be that vent line is clogged. Try using a piece of hose that fits over the vent and blow through it. Make sure vent line is not too long creating a bow or low point in it. Gas can fill the bowed area blocking air flow, making fueling up a nightmare. My Blazer Bay was really bad about this. By shortening the vent hose it eliminated the low spot and stopped the refueling issues.
