took this big 8pt with compound bow at 25 yards on the afternoon of 12/29 searching for does. My biggest deer taken with bow or gun. Very rewarding to take such a nice buck on public land.
Any fishing reports for dularge? Going try for specks Sunday morning. Which area should I try first, sister lake or lake Mechant?
This weekends weather forecast absolutely sucks!! I'm picked for the Tensas lottery hunt and the forecast calls for temps in upper 70's with lows around 68 with a south wind of 15-20 with gust to 35 and chance of thunderstorms. I'm now debating wether or not to just stay home this weekend. Y'all thoughts? Just go anyway or not waste my time?
Made my first bow hunt of the year Sunday and put the smack down on this spike at 7:00 in the morning. This was on public land and I just went straight to a tree I had marked on my GPS from last year. Got settled in my loc on at 20 feet up by 6:30 and out comes this spike at 7:00 walking straight towards me at 60 yards. Got within 20 yards and turned broadside, then started quartering away. Had to make a tough shot to my right, but 'thawk'!!! Drilled him with a heart shot. He ran about 60 yards and piled up. Easy track job. Meat in the freezer. Don't get much better than that. Love bow hunting public land
Made my first hunt of the year on public land 10/20/13 and shot this spike. Hunted an area I marked on my gps from last year. Got set up in my lock on by 6:30 and this spike comes walked towards me at 60 yards out. Got within 20 yards and turned broadside and as he started to walk away, thawk!!! Right through the heart!! Ran about 60 yards and piled up. I'm one happy man. Don't get much better than that for my first bow hunt of the year and on public land!!
I went to make an afternoon hunt and upon arriving at my tree where I left my climbing stand on the bottom of tree, I found my seat ripped off of my stand. I was hunting bayou teche nwr. Would this be a bears doing? I can no longer use my climbing stand because my seat is torn to shreads

Can someone tell me when the rut normally is in the Bayou Teche area? Thanks
Anyone hunt this weekend at tensas nwr? I'm heading up there tomorrow and just wanted to hear a few reports in any
Need some help. My 25 yamaha won't start. I cleaned carbs and put carb kit in. It will start for about a sec if I spray carb cleaner into the carb. Spark plugs appear to be dry after cranking. Anyone have an idea what the problem might be?
Went scout Bayou Teche NWR this weekend and got the crap scared out of me after I almost walked right on top of canebreak rattlesnake. After jumping about 10 feet backwards (lol) I got a closer look of my encounter. In all my years of being out in the woods, this was my first time seeing a rattlesnake in the wild. It had to be at least 4 feet long and was pretty fat and rattling away at me. Had he not rattled when he did, I would have stepped right ontop of him, which would have put me in a bad situation. I was a mile from my truck. Even though I didn't find much deer sign, I still plan to hunt this area in October. However, I'm now a little scared about walking in the dark knowing there's big rattlesnakes out there. What kind of precautions do you guys make in the early bow-season when the snakes are still very active? I'd hate to get bite back there and then have to hike a mile back to my truck. If any of you hunt Teche, be careful.
With all the fish kills being reported for freshwater fish.......how come the same thing doesn't happen in saltwater? or does it?
While fishing Sunday in lower Dularge, I saw a flock of about 30 greys. Has anyone else seen big ducks down this early before? Could it be a sign of an early fall migration and the beginning of a great season? On another note I also saw a coyote in the marsh.
I have a question. Yesterday on my way back across a grassy lake, my 25hp yamaha got overheated. By the time I realized it, I had steam and smoke pouring out the engine. I also lost power and quickly shut the engine off. I waiting a few minutes and then cranked it back up and let the water pump through for a minute or too alowing the water to circulate and cool the engine. It ran fine the rest of the way home. Should I be concerned about causing any potential damage to the engine......particularing the pistons or melting a gasket. I'm no machanic and would hate to cause further damage if I can avoid it. Any advice or help in this area is appreciated. thanks
Can anyone tell when the rut is in the Centerville/Franklin area of Saint Mary Parish. I'm hunting a new area right now and it looks like its about to start. Just found the first scrapes this past week. Just curious of when the peak rut is in this area.
How soon do ya'll hunt a stand after hanging it? when I got down from my stand today after the deer seemed to disappear from my area, I went do some scouting and happened to find an area I've never hunted before that is littered with fresh deer sign. I probly made alot of noise when I busted threw some palmetoes and briars to get to this spot and then I'm sure I made more noise when I was hanging my lock on by myself. Should I let it settle down for a couple days before hunting it or should I hunt it tomorrow? This is a bow only area and my furthest shot is 30 yards. I'm hunting a thick area that has food, water, and plenty of cover. Deer droppings everywhere. It will also be hard to sneak in the dark without being heard with all the dry leaves and obsticles to go through. I really think I have a good shot at bagging a good buck in this area and I don't won't to mess it up. Any suggestions or ideas how I should approach this area without spooking the deer?
After shooting a doe with frost on the ground Friday morning, we are now hunting in 80 degree weather. Is it even worth the effort with a mile walk in this kind of weather, or do I just wait for it to cool down? How do you guys hunt with this kind of heat in mid-November? It's also bone dry which makes scouting tough. I'm guessing the deer won't move much other than at night when its hot like this. What's ya'll thoughts. Stay home and wait for cooler weather or sweat it out in the woods?
Has anyone been up to Tensas NWR for the opener this past weekend? If so, how did you do and are there plenty of acorns dropping? I'd like to plan a trip soon.
I have a question on tree stand placement for bow hunting. I went do some scouting this morning and found awesome deer sign with deer droppings, acorns, rubs, ect. It's on an oak ridge surrounded by swamp and its bow hunting only. The problem is I'm only allowed to hunt to noon on this particular WMA. The sign I found is only about 100 yards from the canal bank where I park my boat. I'm thinking this would be a great afternoon spot, but my guess would be the deer are hitting the acorns on this ridge at night and then bedding in the swamp during the day. Should I just find a trail skirting the ridge and there or should I look deeper into the swamp to catch on in the morning heading back to bed? What's ya'll thoughts. Also, there are only a limited amount of decent trees to hang a stand.
Thanks. Gonna try Sunday morning if the wind is not too bad. North side or south side of Lake mechant?
I'll probably skip this year. Some buddies of mine were there this past weekend for primative hunt and their group of 4 each killed one. But it was good weather up there over the weekend. This weekend will suck for hunting. Oh well, I'll just wait till the Christmas holidays to go back up and bowhunt. I agree with u on the deer population. I believe they need to do away with some of the gun hunts. I'd love to see it go to strickly bow only but I know that will never happen. As for as bears go, I'm not sure what effect if any they have. I've only been hunting Tensas for about 8 years so I really don't know what it used to be like back in the day. It still holds good numbers in my opinion. Weather has a lot to do with it though. I'm actually happy the weather sucked for both lottery hunts. Lol. Means more deer will survive
nice catch!! Any trout being caught on the inside yet around the lakes?
That's not a water snake. It's a mud snake. they feed on eels and fish and are completely harmless. Why did you kill it?
Bayou Racacci. Try Bayou Racacci for fat crabs. The ones you catch by the dams in Jug lake are usually skinny. Much fatter crabs in Bayou Racacci. Just drop nets about 20 feet from right bank in the big curves. lots of current there too.
Just curious if this deer was killed on the Tensas NWR. I was hunting up there the same day and had a monster buck chasing a doe 50 yards from me at about 8:30 the moring of the 10th. Just wondering if this might be the buck that got by me..........looks pretty close to what I saw. Anyhow, congrats on a mighty fine buck!!
The only area I ever hunted is north bend east. I do see a few deer there. Mostly does and spikes. If u don't like snakes stay out of there when it's warm. I saw a bit cotton mouth and a blue racer Thursday while scouting and walked up on a rattler last year. I'm still learning this place and haven't found much deer sign this year. I've already seen 2 bears this year. They seem to have a healthy population on this section. Is there good deer sign at garden city?
What section do you hunt out there? I was out there this weekend too and also have been bowhunting the refuge regularly for the past 4 years. I saw a doe with a yearling yesterday, but let her walk since the yearling looked like it just lost its spots. It's a fun place to hunt, but its some very thick woods and can be tough hunting at times. There's some deer in there, but they have lots of cover right now.
what area are you catching bass? Lake Decade side or further west?
Are catching in the lakes or have the trout moved into to marsh yet? I'm looking to go this weekend if I can get away.
Last year at Bayou Teche NWR, I got lucky. I almost stepped on top of one about that size, but luckly I got a warning. She rattled. Talk about scare the crap out of me. I left her be and went on my way. All I had was a walking stick.
If you don't mind me asking, which WMA is that. That's some pretty swamp!! Congrats on the 2 bow kills.
I'm not mad at the bear. Just not sure why they feel the need to destroy my stand. Guess its like a toy to them to play with. I've seen 4 bears out there this year. Guess I can't leave my climber in the woods overnight anymore. That's messed up with what happened to your cart.
Anyone can tell me when the rut is for the Bayou Teche NWR heading south on hwy 317 is?
I'm hunting the refuge down hwy 317
Thanks for all y'all input. I put a carb kit in it, cleaned everything out and changed the diaphragm on the fuel pump. The diaphragm was the problem. It now cranks right up. Only other issue I'm having is keeping it idle. How do you adjust the idle on a 25 yamaha 2 stoke?
I think y'all are right. It's a gas problem. Im not getting gas to the carbs. When a pull the line off the carb and pump the ball gas shoots out. However the carbs are dry. Could it just be the fuel pump? I'm gonna try to work on it again this week. Thanks
I was in northbend east right off the powerline
That's one crazy dude handling a rattlesnake and a cottonmouth. I don't mess with the dangerous snakes at all. I just examine them and leave them be. However, I don't mind killing a cottonmouth. Some places I hunt are invested with them. Think I'm going to get me a pair of chaps to hunt the early bow season. I'm not going to lie, I'll be some paranoid walking in the dark when its warm now. lol Hope we get some cooler weather soon so I don't have to worry as much about them.
