Violet Canal to be closed for Bayou Dupre sector gate repairs
NEW ORLEANS âThe U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, in conjunction with the Lake Borgne Levee District will be conducting maintenance and repairs to the Bayou Dupre sector gate over the next 2-3 months. In order to execute the work in the safest and most efficient way possible, the Violet Canal is required to be closed to all navigation beginning on February 17, 2014 for a period of approximately 75 days.
During this time, no vessel traffic will be able to pass through the Bayou Dupre Sector gate (Violet Locks) to access Lake Borgne. The Bayou Bienvenue Control structure will remain open to navigation as an alternate route.
The Violet Canal is expected to be open to normal navigation in April 2014.
A friend of mine sent me this picture. He said it
was killed somewhere in Mississippi not sure when or where. But is one big rattlesnake.
ALL YOU TURKEY HUNTERS BEWARE !!!!!!!!!!!!!
A friend of mine Johnny asked me if I wanted to go turkey hunting on his deer lease in Brookhaven ,Ms. He has never killed a turkey before and only made 2 hunts,so I said yes and I'll come call for you.
We got to camp about 4pm Friday evening and headed to the woods. Sat on a food plot till just about dark never saw anything. Got up to leave and owl hooted and we got a gobble about 400 yds away, waited about a minute and hooted again. He gobbled again.
Got him roosted!
Got up Saturday morning and went to where we heard him gobble the evening before.
At about 7 a.m. we owl hooted and he gobbled. We went down a road that went into another food plot when we got there he gobbled again. Now we were about 150 yds from him. I told Johnny let's set up here. We put out 3 decoys out- 2 hens and a jake. Got all set up and I started calling to him, he starts gobbling back we did this for an hour, he would not come in. I heard some hens early so I guess he was with the hens. I kept calling he kept gobbling and about 20 min latter here they come. 4 hens, 2 jakes and a gobbler. They came right into the decoys and I told Johnny to shoot, but he said I cannot see him. The turkey took a few more steps. I told Johnny to shoot again he said I cannot see him. The turkey must have heard us and he picked his head up like he was about to run I told Johnny I got him
BOOM! 1 dead turkey. 10in beard, 1 inch spurs, 18 lbs. 7:40 am.Took a few pictures and left.
I told Johnny lets go look for another one it's still early. Went to the other side of the lease.
Took the call out and started yelping and cutting and got a gobble about 300 yards out. Went down a road to another foor plot. I yelped and he gobbled. He was only 100yds away. I told Johnny to get ready. I looked across the food plot there was a creek and the turkey was on the other side. So I started calling to him. Well, come to find out it was 2 turkeys and they were fired up. Every time I would call they would gobble. Johnny could see them walking up and down the creek but would not cross. So I stared cutting and yelping hard ,they were gobblig their butts off.
At one point, he gobbled 8 times in a row. Then I sat quiet for a minute or two then I heard them fly over the creek. 10 min latter BOOM! One hour later turkey #2 hit the ground.
9in beard, 3/4 in spurs, 17 lbs..

JULY 1ST NEED NEW FISHING LICENSE
Well went back to Alabama too try to get my 3rd turkey. But ended up with a real good weekend. With killing 2 long beards.
The first was killed at 9:30 after missing one at 7:15.
Well at about 6:15 the turkeys started gobbling.I knew that
their was at least 2 birds gobbling. So I stared calling and like book work he came down the road in and out of strut for about 50yds and when he got at 30 yds I shot, waiting for him to fall, but instead he ran off. Kick myself in the butt, got my stuff together and moved to another spot about a mile away.Did some calling and not a sound.Buy now it's about 8:30 or so.Well at about 9:00
they had some crows messing with a hawk and the hawk squell
and a turkey gobbled about 100 - 200 yds away so I call to him and he gobbled again, yelp to him 3 more times and he gobble every time.So I move to him.Got set up and called again and gobble again so I got aggressive and he kept gobbling and came right in at 30yds BOOM.
11" BEARD 1 1/4" SPURS 18LBS.
Well the 2ND one was like book work.He gobbled on the roast
about 3-4 times and at about 7:30 he came in,in full strut
looking for a mate. The only mate he found was my 31/2 #5's
BOOM #2 down for the week end.
10 1/2" BEARD 1 1/8" SPURS 17LBS
Well, got my 2nd turkey of the season.Had too work for him.
Started out in one area where i seen some turkey sign.Got their about 6am by 7:30 have not heard a sound. So i made a move to small clover field about a mile away.(same clover field i killed my 1st bird.)I got their about 7:45 and some calling, nothing.Everything nice ,still and quite just right then at about 8:00 I heard a gobble a long ways off.So i did some calling he gobbled again but a little closer.I started calling every 10-20 min. and sometimes he would gobble and sometimes he would not.Well 30-40 min. went by and not a sound.Well about 9:00 i was just about ready to give up i said let's give it about 30 min more.(TOO MYSELF)I took out my crow call and gave it a toot. Two turkeys gobbled about 200 yds away.So i yelp and he gobbled for some reason(women) he got all fired up,everytime i called he would gobble. This went on for about 30 min.He got to with in 100 yds but would not come in.Then he started moving away for me,so i cutt to him and he started gobbling again. So i got real aggressive with my calling the more i call the more he would gobble and dbl gobble. Now he's coming closer. Then i gave him the silent treatment let him come look for me.He gobbled again now's he 60 yds and coming up the road to the field. Then everything got quite for about 10 min. so i soft yelp he gobbled and was drumming
right on edge of the field could not see him (20 yds). When he step out into the field he went into full strut then i catch movement guess what another one walks out into the field.Took aim on the first one he was bigger at about 35 yds. BOOM I MISS and he flew away good thing i was a fast pumper (i shoot a pump) i swong on the second bird and shot him before he knew what happend.
91/2 BEARD 1 IN. SPURS 15LBS. KILL 9:35AM
GOING TO TRY FOR #3 THIS WEEKEND !!!!
Well went up to the hunting camp in Alabama to make my first
turkey hunt of the season.Got up there thursday night, not being there sence deer season and not knowing if the turkeys are gobbling or not.So friday morning I went to a area that most always has birds in it.Got there early and set up and owl hooted nothing waited and hooted again and nothing. So I waited a little while and put out some soft yelps nothing again.Started doing a little calling off and on cutting, yelping, purring still have not heard anything by now it's 7:20 and getting a little down. Then at 7:30 a gobble out of know where. Was i hearing things, well 5 min. past and nothing,I called not a sound. Then a crow sounded off and the turkey gobbled again he is about 500 yards away
through a bottom , across a creek up on a hill.Long ways away so i sat their for 30 min an listen to him gobble 3-4 more times. He would only gobble to crow calls. I could not handle it anymore,so off and running i went after him.If i guess right he should be in a little 50x100 ft. clover field. So as i moved closer to the clover field i would crow call to see where he was.I would not call to him so he would not come looking for me.After about 40 or so min. i got to the field no bird nothing crow call nothing yelp nothing.
So i went ahead and set up in some weeds and did some soft calling i figure he had to still be aroud somewhere, not a sound.Waited about 15-20 min. and called again with some cutts and yelps he GOBBLED 100 yds in front.Did somemore soft yelps and clucks not a sound,10-15 min pass and nothing, then all of a sudden a crow lands in a pine tree right above me and crows the turkey gobbles he is not 15 yards from me but he is on my right side which is block from cover so i move my eyes trying to look through the cover and there he is but not 1 but 2 toms the bigger tom was last so i waited for the first one to pass then shoot the second one nope, i tryed to move to soon and got busted the big tom went into alert could not swing on him when i tryed he took off running and the other was fast on his feet but a got lucky and got him. 8-inch beard , 1-inch spurs , 17 1/2 lbs ,shot about 50 yards.Sorry I'm not in pictures but hard to talk your own picture..

HOURS 5AM TO 6PM 7 - DAYS WEEK
YEA ,I remember those days, GOOD OLD DAYS
YES, still 35 cents. But nice size for bait,
this early.
How about using the oil out of
TUNA FISH & SARDINES .
Eric I would not worry about raking now because the seeds will get into the dead grass and the dampness (DEW ) in the morning will keep the grass wet and help the seeds germernate.
is right you are not to late to plant.
If you plant now, by the time its up and growing
good it will be late DEC. early JAN.when everything else is dead.Thats when you want it most.
But if in a hurry to plant get a mix of rye wheat and oats, and just over seed your area with it and fert. Then to cover the seeds drag a piece of fence
and old gate anything like that to cover seeds.
On a acre field i would put 200lbs triple 17 or 300lbs of triple 13,fert,25lbs of rye,50lbs of oats, and 25 lbs of wheat.
do not put to much preasure on him,
wait for the RUT.keep them DOES around.
he will return, just hope your their
when he does. GOOD LUCK
Nice deer you killed their Hunt Master.Where did he come from.
Here's my guess 158 6/8- 235lbs.
CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN
GARRY (slim )
Ready to go to Kansas if anything comes up
for next year please keep me and chris in mind.
I have Vanguard in 30-06 for sale.
All good ideas, but if you would disc up your food plots in mid summer and let that grass die it would put it's own nitrogen back into the soil. It's like making a compost.I make my first discing around mid June. Then i come back around Labor Day first weekend in Sept and do it again.
Then at the end of Sept. early Oct. I fert. and plant depending on weather.I use 17-17-17. I have been doing it this way for 25 years.Have never had to add nitrogen to my food plots, but every 3-4 years i do lime my fields with 2000lbs per acre.
We plant rye,wheat,oats,crimson clover.
On about a acre field i use 200lbs triple-17
25lbs rye,50lbs wheat,50lbs oats and about a gallon of clover seeds.(SPREAD CLOVER LAST AND BY HAND).Hope this helps, good luck....
