Hollie Trahan shoots her first deer while in Arkansas for duck hunting. Took the family up to shoot some ducks and since the ducks are really far and few between, we went deer hunting on a friends property. I took my 9 year old daughter with me as always and wouldn't you know it this nice doe popped out and she wanted to shoot and I felt she was ready. She grabbed her Ruger American compact in 7mm-08 with her Remington 'Managed Recoil' loaded and laid her rifle on the stand rail. All she could see was green in the trees. I put her on my lap and she looked through the scope again and saw BROWN. She asked me 'right behind the shoulder, right?' I told her hold it there and I took the safety off. She reached for the trigger and dropped the doe where she stood. Her exact words were, 'I dropped that doe in her tracks, huh daddy!!!' After that it was hugs and high fives!!! I don't think I ever saw her so happy! It was an awesome time! Just don't get any better than that!!! She shot it the day after Christmas and still talking about it and proud of herself. So am I!!! Lol

Hey Blue... I'm with you on the hikes in prices on here for guns and ammo! We all know, as long as people are willing to keep buying it, they will keep selling for the jacked up prices. All I can say is to not let them bring you down. No matter how wrong it is, they will keep doing it. I don't wish anything bad on anyone, but karma is a bitch! Pardon my language on this Ash Wednesday....

Got halfway up this morning and had a good one blow at me seemed like 50 yards out. Wasn't using a flashlight because of the bright moon, but he still busted me. Back in the same stand. Hopefully he comes back. He didn't tear out. He just walked off. Not sure if it's the right call, but i go with my gut. Hunting south of Houma on an oak ridge and I hear music to my ears....acorns dropping! Good luck bow hunters!!!

JB does make good points. He's right. I started putting feed out just so I can get pics of the herd and just started hunting over it. Got away from the tactics like JB described. Obviously when the rut starts, it changes everything. I'll usually hit the funnels and trails later in the season and leave the feed alone. I do keep feeding and put the wife and kids over the feed, but I catch em coming. Unless it's really windy or raining... then I walk around. Might not be best, but I make sure I'm as scent free as possible and it works. Pattern your deer, don't put too much pressure, and pick the best days to go (wind, barometric pressure, etc.). Sorry for going in left field... got carried away, lol! One more thing.... the lease I have with the hogs, I put a big feeder and keep it full and spraying corn twice a day. On the other end of the lease, I don't put anything. The side with no feed has all the rub lines, scrapes, deer sightings, etc. I like to think keeping the hogs well fed keeps them on that side. Don't get me wrong, the hogs do still roam all over, but not as bad as when I was putting feed all over. And it seems like the deer are fine. My heard has been growing in numbers and quality over the last few years too. Not sure how big your lease it, but this area is only 300 acres. Not much land I know, but me and my family are the only ones that hunt it. Primarily me though. Hope my rambling helps....

I was always told soybeans too, but they gobble up that and any flavor rice bran I put down where I'm at. Maybe try a feed trough or gravity fed feeder that only the deer can reach. A little trick I started this year for the coons and squirrels.... put grease on the legs. My corn lasts sooo much longer now, lol! One other thing.... hog wire and t-posts around your feed area. There's a lot of back and forth on how high, but I'd say around 38-42' would be good. I'm sure I'll get a lot of feedback on the height, but I really don't care. Just trying to give you some ideas. Good luck and let us know if you find something!

Guess I'm not up with today's slang. What is '1 hour ago price range'? Don't worry, you didn't hurt my feelings or anything. Just wondering what you meant. You're right though. It does make some noise, especially compared to my bows! But, between me, my wife, and daughter...we've yet had a deer or hog jump the bolt. You're right about the Stryker and Raptors. Very nice crossbows. Guess it all gonna depend on how much he wants to spend.

I know there are way better and some way worse, but I have a Quad 400. It's a good crossbow for not that much money. I'm very confident with it and would not think twice shooting it at anything 50 yards away. It actually has really good groupings with 100 grain broadheads and carbon express maxima blue streaks. I've been having it for a while. My daughter has been hunting with it for a few years now and she's 10. Of course I cock it and hand it to her ready when 'it's time', but she handles it and is pretty accurate with it too. It is pretty heavy, but shouldn't be a problem if he'll have a place to rest it on. Not trying to influence you one way or the other, but this is a cheaper option. Good luck!

i have one that's 27'. i always wanted one on the wall that was a 'perfect 27'. like the other guys said, it's all on what you want! i have a sac-a-lait on the wall that's only 12', but it was my daughter's first fish, so it's a little different, lol. if you want to eat it, take some pictures and measure overall length and girth to get a reproduction done, if not, check with your taxidermist on how to freeze it. i've had three different taxidermist say three different ways. either way, congrats on the catch and get you a big trout to put next to it, lol

they have lots of cameras out there with no flash. they use infrared and take excellent pictures at night. pay close attention cause some shine red when it takes pics. you gonna want one that doesn't do anything but just take the pic. if i was by mine i could tell you the one i have. i have some spypoints that just has a little red light, but can't remember which one of mine doesn't have any light. i'm sure someone will give you a tip before i get in. sorry offshore right now. i'm sure your local academy will have something decent. you'll have to do your research cause not sure how much help their reps will be.

you can always hide a camera looking at the camera they vandalized. OR.... you can get one of those fancy cameras that send pics to your phone instantly. problem with those are they are really expensive and possible they may approach it from behind it too. could hide the instant one looking at the other. just conceal real good. hope this helps!

do your scouting before the rain. look for signs of rubs, scrapes, etc.. after the rain, your scent will be washed away. if your deer are still in rut, get you a can of buck bomb or hang some wicks on tree branches with tinks 69 on it. wait for old boy to come your way. I'm by far no expert, but this usually works for me. just keep your rifle steady and breathe, lol!
bathe in scent free soap and shampoo, wash clothes in scent free detergent, spray yourself before you go in the woods before going in with scent free spray, and be as quiet as you can be. I know a lot of hunters don't do half that and I've went on quick hunts after work and killed with greasy redwings, but can't hurt to be proactive. that way you know you did as much as you could, if you don't see anything and regret not doing it. you could always put corn out and stuff like that especially late in the season where they looking for food cause all the acorns are spoiled or eaten. cameras help too and tell you what you have and when they are typically passing. I can go on and on, but the bottom line is you gotta put the time in the woods and ALWAYS hunt downwind of where you think they coming from even with all the scent free stuff. put different stands at different locations where deer pass based on wind direction. that way there's a stand for each wind direction. a lot of hunters don't even go if the wind isn't right. if you get busted, you may never see that deer again. but, if you're hunting with a rifle and 100 yards away from where they coming out and in a box stand, I don't consider that as critical. well, I feel like I'm starting to write a book so i'll stop. I know a lot of guys will agree and disagree with what I had to say, but I'm just giving you thoughts and advice based on my experiences. good luck and your deer will come. just gotta be patient.

A comment titled: Re: Should I keep trying? in response to a report titled: Should I keep trying?

I've hunted in similar. What we've done make a good ditch with the mud boats with a turnaround at the end. Put the feeder at the end and stand at the beginning. Of course we were lucky enough to put our feeders upwind, lol. Anyway, the deer come up for their last meal, drop them where they stand, and pull the boat right up to them. The bad part is it doesn't always work out that easy. Keep your waders in the boat, but I agree with the other comments about trial and error. You gotta learn what you have and where you can go. I would advise not learning it when it's 20 degrees outside. Oh yeah, we did hire a guy with an airboat to lay the grass down in the high grass to make nice shooting lanes too. Just be patient and you'll get your shot. Maybe the other guys could answer better, but out there I think the only think you could put out on the 'off season' would be like mineral blocks or something like that. We didn't do anything but start filling the feeders with soy beans in September. Hope this helps...

She said, 'that is true'! She also told me that she's gonna feed us for a month with her deer, lol!!! Anyway, we appreciate the comment and support! She is very proud and we brought her deer to the taxidermist where she already has the spot picked out in the living room when we get it back. Thanks again!
