My nephew took the buck of a life time this afternoon just north of Thibodaux back-a Choupic. He took him down with one shot from his trusty Red Rider BB gun at about 3 yards. The best part is he didn't shoot his eye out!!!

You're right Chackbay. I can't kill'em like that in the swamps backa Chackbay. I tried for years and I can't. I've only seen a couple of deer come out of there that score 140 or better. I've been hunting back there since I was a kid. I've had some good deer on the camera (130 to 140 class)...but never killed better than a 6 point. I missed a nice 8 one year with my muzzleloader. He might have scored 120. So I decided to give up on it. I’ll still make a couple of hunts with my Dad and my brother every year…but until the people from back here decide to start letting the deer get big...I'll hunt places where they have 140 to 150 class deer.

I've been hunting with a 300 Weatherby Mag for 10 years and I love it. If you want them to drop where they are then you shoot them dead in the shoulder. If you don't want to lose any meat then you put it right behind the shoulder. They will run off in that case...but there will be plenty of blood and they won't go far.

A comment titled: They're real in response to a report titled: Texas Trip 08

They are real...A trip like this can cost anywhere from 5000 to 8000 depending on how big of a deer you want to shoot. A 150 class deer is 5500 plus tips and I think it includes lodging and a management buck. An out of state big game license is 300. It is about 600 miles from Thibodaux LA to the ranch which is just outside of Hebbronville Tx. I have the contact info at work. I will try to remember post it tomorrow.

A comment titled: Can't find em in response to a report titled: Mysterious Creature

I'm from the community of Choupic and it's extremely hard to catch a Choupic down here these days. When I was a kid they were a dime a dozen. They have been over fished for their eggs. From what I'm told they are very similar to caviar. If you clean them and fry them fresh...they are hard to beat. You can't just throw them in the ice chest. You have to keep them alive till you get home and once you clean them you need to soak the meat in some ice water with a little vinegar. Then you cut the meat into small pieces and dry it off a little. I'm telling you it's the BEST!!!

A comment titled: I agree... in response to a report titled: Management on 300 Acres???

It's easy to manage when you have a lot of deer and when the bordering leases do the same. But any management is better than none. I also hunt on a small track of land in Chackbay surrounded by dog clubs and other clubs. Twenty years ago you couldn't find a deer in that swamp...now we kill a few every year and the camera is full of pictures. We feed heavy and stop shooting after we kill a few to eat. I can care less if ya'll shoot the last deer walking on your lease. But I think we will continue shooting a few does early in the season and not shooting a buck unless we are going to put him on the wall...
