Very proud dad this weekend, and very happy boys. Harrison, my 9yr old, was able to get his 2nd deer, 1st ever doe Saturday morning. While his lil brother had fallen asleep, he took advantage and put down a big doe to start the weekend off. Now Peyton, my 7yr old, he was able to finally get his 1st ever deer, when he made a perfect 55 yard shot on this big doe Sunday evening. This lil man has hunted hard, he's been very patient, and it all finally paid off. I could not be happier for both of them, they are truly addicted now, and we look forward to putting some nice horns on the wall before the season ends.

My 8yr old son had an amazing holiday break. He was able to kill his 1st ever duck, his 1st ever hog, then the highlight, his 1st ever deer. He has hunted hard, and his patience and shooting practice paid off. He made a killer shot of his hog, 127 yards just as light was fading away, and his 4pt was a impressive 152 yard shot. I could not be any prouder of him, this is what the outdoors is all about. The smile on his face, and the memories we have will last a lifetime.

The catfish in Lake Verret are heating up, my son Harrison and I were able to net almost 50 fish this past weekend on our noodles. We were fortunate enough to land this 45lb big boy, along with several others in the 10-20lb range. Fresh cut perch seem to be the ticket!!!!!!

Made a trip to our new lease this weekend, set the camera up last Friday, and got a few deer to pay us a visit. Hope to see more of them later, and hopefully some bigger ones.

Just picked up some property in area 8, around Jefferson Davis parish. I was wondering if anyone had some info to share on deer activity, size, rut, what to feed with, or any other info that will be helpful for me and my family.

This is a good one. My nephew and I decided to give it one last shot yesterday evening, so we set up on a pipline about 750 yards apart from each other. We had a good trail coming to some soybeans we had put out, and sure enough at 5:15 a deer comes out to have a little snack. The deer walked out about 265 yards from my nephew, which put it 471 yards away from me. I knew it was a buck, but wasn't sure it was a shooter. Then all of a sudden I here a bullet scream by, but the deer is still standing there. He missed it clean, but the deer didn't run. I decided that I would take a shot at it. I shoot a browning 300 Win Mag, and I know what my gun can do. I knew the deer was about 430 yards away give or take a few, so I put the cross hairs on his head and pulled the trigger, and watched him fall in his tracks. As soon as the deer fell my nephew calls all excited saying did you see me drop that deer, and I proceeded to tell him that I had shot also. Both of us shot at the exact same time, but neither one of us new the other had shot. Once we got to the deer there was one bullet hole found, and it was mine. Just below the white patch of his neck a perfect 165 grain SST smack down(471 yards my new personal best). Needless to say I was very excited, and my nephew was very deflated. But after further investagation, we found a bullet hole in the hind quater, that missed any vitals but did manage to bust the guts. So we managed to compromise, I get the horns, he gets the nutz sack. Better luck next time Brett. Stick around and your uncle J will teach you to shoot like him one day.

My family and I are looking for land to lease for the 2009-2010 hunting season. We are interested in about 250 to 500 acres, within a two hour drive of Prairieville. We have all our own equipment, and we are willing to work for what we get. We are presently on a management system, that has DMAP assistance. I'm presently hunting swamp land, and our access is starting to get hard, and we have no way of repairing our trails. If anyone knows of something thats available, PLEASE let me know. You can contact me 225-978-4401, or 225-313-6562; email me at, or

Its been 4 long years since I've killed a nice one. This one made a terrible judgement call and walked out in front of my Browning 300 MAG, at a whopping 22 yards. After a short 75 yard track here he is. Not bad for a little swamp buck the day after Christmas. Had him on camera one time in early November. 150lb, 13" spread 10PT.

With the season coming to a quick end, I decided to give it one last try, and as you can see it was worth it. The second to last day of the season, and I score my first bow kill. This was picture perfect, got in the stand at 6:30 and it was over at 7:15. A whopping 8 yard shot, that clipped the spin, needless to say the tracking was easy. Looking forward to next year!!!!

This is what hunting is all about. Letting your kids enjoy what we were brought up doing. This big doe came out at 4:50 on our last evening hunt, and Alyssa laid the smack down on her. The 7mm-08 traveled a whopping 60 yards, and the rest is history. 105lbs of pure joy for a 47lb 9 year old. Can't wait to do it again. Take a kid hunting, because it deffinetly brings out the kid in you.

Put out 150lbs of Rice Bran, and in 5 days it was cleaned out. Two cameras took 195 pics.

A comment titled: Baiting! in response to a report titled: Baiting Deer - Yes or No?

I do put out Bait, for 2 specific reasons. 1st, I have 2 young boys who love to hunt, baiting allows for deer to come in, and gives me time to get my boys set up for a good clear, clean, ethical shot, plus it allows me to teach them how deer act, and what to look for. 2nd, it allows us to judge the deer, its age, weight, antler size, whether its healthy or sick, thus enabling me to better manage my herd. I was brought up hunting old school, finding the patterns, bedding, natural food sources, but back then they shot everything that moved. Times are different now, and I think baiting can be a good thing.

A comment titled: 300 Win Mag in response to a report titled: rifle calibers

I have a Browning 300 Win Mag with a boss. It is by far the best rifle I have ever owned. I shoot a 165gr Horandy BTSP. The gun kicks less than a 243, but can shoot, with ease out to 500 yards. With a zero at 300 yards, I am 9.5 inches low at 400 yards, and about 2.5 inches high at 100 yards. The big seller for me, was that it cost the same as the 7mm. Great gun, highly reccomended.
