I hunted with my boss on his lease in St Francisville yesterday afternoon. Hunted a field that the deer normally use heavily and where a 6pt was spotted the afternoon before. Dropped a half a sack of rice bran to bring em in close enough to shoot. My boss took a few handfulls and threw it high in the air to check the wind. Boy, I believe this did the trick to lure the deer straight in. I could not see the deer coming from my right side until they were right in front of me. Immediately after taking the stand, two huge Toms showed up. At 5:30, a spike and a 3pt showed up and fed and spared for a while. Right before dark, the 6pt showed up with this 100lb nanny. I used the wrong pin so I shot her high in the shoulder and the arrow exited under her belly in front of her back leg. After an hour of searching in the pouring rain and not finding any blood, we gave up the search until morning. We found here about 150 yards away by a stroke of luck. Due to where the arrow exited, she did not drop a speck of blood. These deer have never been fed rice bran. They all came right into it but were unsure of what it was, they just knew it smelled good. They were scared as hell of the pile until they got enough nerve to eat. I believe throwing a bit in the air and letting the wind take it is a new trick i will use in the future. The hunt was awesome and I am so happy we were able to recover her.
Does anyone know if there is a water buffalo that you can purchase to pull behind an atv our utv.
I have a Polaris Sportsman 335 and the radiator fan does not always blow. Can anyone tell me if this fan is supposed to blow all of the time or only when the temp gets to a certain level.
How often do you guys worm your hunting dogs? I have heard schedules that go anywhere from every two months to every 6 months. Also, what do you guys use to worm your dogs. I have figured out the dose to use the Safeguard suspension for goats on my dogs. It comes out a heck of a lot cheaper than using the granules marketed for dogs.
I have a chance on a lease in Clearwater, LA which is two miles off of I-49 and borders Bayou Cocodrie. This is pretty much across the interstate from Cheneyville. The lease consists of a big cypress swamp. Can anyone tell me if there are any ducks in this area?
I am new to saltwater fishing and wanted to poll you veterans to find out your top baits and colors for Specks and Reds. I don't want my saltwater tacklebox to end up like my bass box, with loads of crap and all I really ever use are worms, jigs, and spinnerbaits. I want to load my bag with baits and colors that I will actually use. Thanks in advance for your help.
Fished out of Vermilion bay saturday and caught a fish at the 4 mile cut that I am pretty sure was a Gou, freshwater drum??? Is it possible that there are gou in brackish water or could this have been a croaker that lost its color b/c of the muddy water. Wish i would have took a pic. If I would have caught this fish in freshwater, I would have positively identified it as a gou, but am skeptical due to the brackish water
This isn't about Bullfrogs, but about those little tiny rat bastards that hang out all over your house, leaving turds on your doors and windows. Is there any kind of poison that will get rid of them. I have enough. You open the door and they jump into the house, get smashed in the jam when you close the door, and piss all over you when you swat them. Can someone please help!!! I need to get rid of em!!!
What are the best types of seed to plant for dove fields and when is the best time to plant. I believe most people plant brown top millet and sunflowers. Just wanted to see what everyone elses opinions are.
Can you guys please tell me what launches are available with access to Vermilion Bay on the West side. I know of the Cypremort Point State Park Launch, the Delcambre launch and the ICY launch. Are there any more?
The farmer behind my house is having a terrible problem with coons. He said they knock over his corn and knock over his crawfish traps. If anyone is interested in trapping or hunting them let me know. I can get you in touch with the farmer. He is located in Opelousas. Does anyone know the best way to trap them? What is the best bait to use?
Hey guys, I plan on fishing the thursday afternoon tournament in Henderson tomorrow. I have not been in there since last year and I know that the water is extremely high and the hurricane killed most of the fish, but has anyone been lately and can give me any tips on where to land a few keepers. Thanks guys.
Went to our local honey hole, "Behemoth Heaven", saturday afternoon. We fished through the adverse weather conditions and ended up with 22 sacs, 23 bream, and a bass. The light drizzle really turned the sacs on. My buddy went back the next afternoon and only caught 2 sacs, 25 bream and 15 Bass. Man I thought them sacs always had their mouth open???
Was thinking about going down to grand isle for a couple nights this week. Are the specks still biting or has the rain messed everything up?
Can someone please give me tips on when, how, and what to plant for doves. We usually shoot a few doves in my field and I want to plant something to make them hang around. Most people plant millet. I wanted to find out what works best. Also, can't you plow certain sections at certain times of the season to make them hang around?
Well my dog just got hit by a car. Thank god, she is all right. I definately need to get some type of system to keep her in the yard. Does anyone have any advice on if the wireless dog fences are any good and if so, what are the best models.
Does anyone have any tips on "planting" moss on new cypress trees. My trees are about 6ft tall and i took some moss out of the woods and hung it on the tree. Will the moss take? Is there a proper way of doing this. Thanks in advance for all responses.
Hey guys, i have a polaris that requires synthetic 0w40 oil. Seems like the only place to find it is at the polaris dealer. Do any of you guys substitute anything else for it?
Recently bought my first spool of Power Pro. Do you guys normally use a leader? If so, when do you use the leader and what type or leader do you use?
Has anyone been harvesting catalpa worms or is it still a little early?
Also, if I have a tree with no worms, is it possible to plant worms on a tree? Will the moths come back to the same tree?
I agree with some of the bashing, but I take this as friendly fire. By the way, I will be picking up a "New to Me" Bowtech Tomkat that I found on this site tomorrow afternoon. So, the long dong stick and string in the picture will go into retirement batting 1.000!!!!!!
I know, I know. I desparately need a new bow but I had never even shot this one at a deer. I figured I at least needed some reason to get a new one. It did do the job but I know want one of the newer "Modern Bows". This bow was handed down to me by my Great Great.... Grandfather, "Sitting Bull".
Sorry for the misprint. The dose for Ivomec is 1/10cc per 10lbs of body weight. As my mistake proves, do not take anyone's full advice for alternative medicines. I do not buy the namebrand worm meds for my dog b/c i can get the meds for cattle that contain the same ingredient for a fraction of the cost. I got most of this knowledge from other people, but did my own research after to make sure that the ingredients and doses compared to those marketed for dogs.
Has anyone ever shot two blade fixed broadheads. I think Magnus makes some??? Ted Nugent shot them. Seems to me like they may fly better and penetrate better, but I don't see them as very popular.
You can't worry that much about things like this. As long as you give your dog the proper medication for heartworms, that is all that you can do. If your dog is heartworm free when you start the meds and give the dog the medicine every 30 days, the dog will be fine. We give our dogs ivomec which is a worm medicine for cattle. 1cc of this medicine per every 10lbs of body weight squirted in the dogs mouth is the cheapest way. Many top name brand heartworm medicines contain ivermectin which is the same ingredient in ivomec, but these meds are much more expensive b/c they are marketed for dogs. Long story short, give your dog the proper meds, get out there and hunt and don't worry about it. You have a better chance of getting west nile than your dog of getting heartworms if it is medicated properly.
Rooster,
What material is yours made out of ?
I have thought about making my own out of copper or aluminum but those metal will bend very easily. Does anyone have any experience with a copper or aluminum anchor? How does it stand up?
I would think that if the anchor is sticking a few feet out of the mud, that it would sink???
Goin to the lease (just north of Suire's) today to knock down some grass.. Hope we're not too late. Only saw about 8 birds sunday.
What kinds of changes did you guys need to make to your rigging and boat. I could sure use some help also.
I should have been more clear. I too use Ivomec for heartworms. I am trying to find out about worming for whipworms, tapeworms, and roundworms.
I am new to V bay but have caught a few fish lately. You can try the mouth of the Avery Canal which is where the Delcambre canal dumps into Weeks Bay for Reds. We fished bait shrimp and fileted mullet. You can also fish the 4 mile cut which leads to V Bay from ICY for Reds also. As for specks, we have caught a few on the reefs in the pass. The ones we caught were on DOA shrimp 2ft under a popping cork or on cocahoe minnows. We ran 15 miles offshore and caught 65 specks yesterday on a platform. Hope this helps. Captain Paul's fishing edge has a lot of fishing spots if you purchase it. It even tells you how to fish the spots. I am sure there are many many spots to fish, but like i said I am also new to V bay.
Thanks Guy.
you got mail
Bump, any more opinions???
Thanks for the great info guys. I will mainly be fishing out of Vermilion Bay.
Can anyone tell me where the chene is?
I would go with DirecTV. I have it at my house. I install satellite communication systems for a living. I would go out and install it for free as a trade for a fishing trip out there. If you have any questions, let me know, 337-319-6580.
I'm going to try it tonigh. I can't wait to smoke their A$$.
Bump, anyone?
Temp was in the low 70's with rain. I guess we will see.
